Heath Bell signs 3 year / $27M deal

Featured Replies

Awesome. First of many, I hope.

:nugget Not good, Don't like it at all. Not when the team has so many other pressing needs to fill.

Nice to see that we signed someone. Bad to see that it is Bell. Closer was definitely a need, no question, but Bell immediately becomes one of the highest paid players on our team in a position that isn't even important unless the rest of the team puts us in place for wins. We still need a third basemen and starting pitching to do that regularly.

Everyone saw this coming. Beinfest has been obsessed with Bell for like 3 seasons. He's pretty damn good, but damn if this takes away any money from Reyes and Buehrle/Wilson, I will be pissed.

I would think the team having a legit closer can only help in terms of Buerhle and Wilson. Of course the money matters most but if money is close, it could be a swaying point to them to know they have a solid closer backing them up. I doubt the Fish would have given Bell $9 mil per unless they planned to still spend elsewhere.

You said it yourself - Closer was definitely a need. $9MM a year for one of the best closers in the game? I'll take it.

Besides, I believe Reyes is a lock to be signed. An SP as well.

If anything, this means Cespedes probably falls off the radar.

I'm just waiting for the annoucement on the 40 year, 1 billion dollar ballpark naming rights deal. Money is no issue............

There's is no naming deal, so dont flip.

Yeah, the love affair has been pretty obvious. Maybin was probably shipped to SD last year as a result of talks for Bell that had been going on for a while, only by that point Maybin wasn't valuable enough for SD to give him up.

This makes sense, and I hope it's right.

This feels like a very nice contract. His career numbers as a reliever are not much worse than Papelbon's, yet 3/$27MM is far less money than 4/$50MM.

I, also, just hope this doesn't preclude other spending.

Also, we have to hope that his peripherals last year were just fluky. This price feels very reasonable, though.

That's ok. I think Cespedes is an exciting sounding player, but his stock has risen dramatically and I'm leery of spending that much money on a player who hasn't played in America. Even thought there are some notable successes, the failure rate of foreign players is still far too high when you consider how much they are paid.

Admin does make a good point. They wouldn't do this if that was all the money we have to spend. Maybe they do plan on opening it up this offseason.

Right now, the pen looks like this.

CL: Heath Bell

SU: Steve Cishek

MR: Ed Mujica

MR: Mike Dunn

MR: Ryan Webb

LOOGY: Randy Choate

LR: Burke Badenhop/Clay Hensley

AAA: Jose Ceda, Steve Cishek, Jay Buente, Dan Jennings.

A very of nice stable of arms. Cishek definitely earned another shot. You could even afford to trade Hensley or Badenhop if you think Ceda is ready (Webb can do LR, I think?). Also, we have lots of guys from San Diego ha.

Edit: for my own lack of awareness + Oviedo's non-tender.

A very of nice stable of arms, even if Oviedo doesn't return, which now seems inevitable. You could even afford to trade Hensley if you think Ceda or Cishek are ready. Also, we have lots of guys from San Diego ha.

big signing for us but get rid of hensley and put cishek in there and jhan marinez was traded.

Reyes + Buehrle now, please.

Patience.

I could see a very sexy team all under contract after the dust in Milwaukee clears next week.

Honestly, I wouldn't mind it if we brought back Oviedo / Nunez. I think he could do pretty well in the 8th inning, now that he has closer's experience. Granted, that may not transfer over to the 8th, but maybe it'd be easier for him. Just an idea. If we could get Madson as well, however, I'd gladly leave Oviedo off the roster.

I mean, if we're signing Bell and Reyes, why not blow this off season wide open and just sign everyone? Go get Pujols and Buehrle/Wilson, too.
