Heath Bell signs 3 year / $27M deal

So can we assume a bullpen of:

CL Bell

SU Mujica

MR Cishek

MR Dunn (L)

MR Webb

MR Choate (L)

LR Hensley

Good lookin pen

why do people still want hensley back? he tailed off alot last year and would rather give that spot to ceda who showed improvement.

I still like Hensley at this point. He didn't have a great year in 11 but I still likes what he brings at this point more then Ceda. If Ceda has a Good spring then we can talk.

So, do we get any mention on ESPN's morning shows like Mike and Mike or First Take for our Bell signing?

I swear First take is all Football now. Literally. Once in a while LeBron will get in there. How many times can you debate who the best QB in the league is right now? Which really isn't a debate it's Rodgers.

We gotta get at least get in on Mike and Mike.

Well, which sports are in season right now that Americans care about?

Baseball

Basketball

Football

I know but the show used to have segments here and there about other things besides football and Skip Bayless. College football barely gets in.

I still watch First Take even though it has gotten really annoying.

Every show goes:

Dallas Cowboys, 2nd best team in NFC?

Tony Romo, a top NFL qb?

Tim Tebow, multiple questions.

Is Vince Young better than Vick?

Hopper?

So can we assume a bullpen of:

CL Bell - 2.55 ERA

SU Mujica - 3.28 ERA

MR Cishek - 2.96 ERA

MR Dunn (L) - 3.60 ERA

MR Webb - 4.14 ERA

MR Choate (L) - N/A

LR Hensley - 3.93

Good lookin pen

I added in Bill James' projections for ERA next season. BJ also has Jose Ceda at 3.00 ERA and Burke Badenhop at 3.93 ERA.

The 6 guys you have in there average out to a 3.41 ERA. If we give Choate ~ a half-weight for IP and a 3.00 ERA, you're looking at roughly a 3.38 bullpen ERA. That would have been good for 6th in the NL; ironically, that's where they finished last year, too (3.44 ERA).

Gotta catch em all!

And by Pokemon standards, you must trade for some.

Gameshark, brah

In past years, I would've hated this a lot more.

But considering payroll is going up, I don't hate it. I don't see this preventing us from doing anything. We seem to be a near-lock to get Jose Reyes and who knows what else.

I'd much rather pay Heath Bell 9 million than have to watch Leonel Juan Carlos Oviedo Nunez and his 6 million.

I think we should trade some of the reliever depth we have and turn it into valuable assets at other positions.

I would rather have Jonathan Broxton, but I agree. It seems out payroll is going to be pretty high. As long as we we end up with Buehrle/Wilson and Reyes, I'm happy.

Broxton is starting to have arm problems, and the last two seasons he has been a joke. Heath Bell is a much better choice than Broxton. Appears to be a good signing. I like it.

Yeah, I'd rather have Bell.

Broxton's only intriguing because it's a one-year deal, but he's clearly regressed.

At least with Bell, you can say that his velocity is still the same despite the declining K rate last year and he still did well, regardless.

I wonder if they will do a press conference. Is that something thy normally do for big FA pickups? It's not like we have had many in the past few years.

I'm not a fan of big money closer contracts at all... and I don't like the contract if we end up missing out on other big guys because we wouldn't offer a few more mil a year.. but if we're saying f*** it and going all in, then hell yea this is great get because we need a closer, and he's as good as there is.

I doubt it will have any monetary reflections on signing other players. But I can see some saying it did if we don't sign nearly every FA we have been mentioned to. The team is going to be spending this off season. And, as someone else has said, we still don't know what the naming rights will bring us. The meetings next week are going to be interesting.

But what big surprises so far this year. Baker is traded, we get a lefty SP (even if he is back of the rotation), and we bring in a lock down closer. Who coulda guessed? I think next week, or very shortly after, we get that top of the rotation lefty SP, and probably at least Reyes. I also don't think that the Cuban kid is out of our picture just yet.

What's in store for us after that?? Trades. And some lower case FA signings along with some Minor League contract invites to ST. The team seems hot on lefties, so it wouldn't surprise me to see a couple of those signed as insurance.

One thing about that income from naming rights that is up in the air is how will they use that cash the first few years. Could go to player salaries. Or it could go to paying off their incurred debt. Either would be logical and understandable. I might pay off the debt first, then after use it on salaries. Makes for an ingrown cushion (or IOW, "insurance policy") for the near future.

I can't believe people are complaining about this signing! WTF! He was one of the better closer still available and he's better than Leo! Plus for just 9 million a year for three years I think this is money well spent. What more do you doubters want? We'd have to sign every available free agent and then people would still bitch....

Can't satisfy everyone.

Don't even look at it as $9 million added to the payroll. I look at it incrementally as only $3-4 added to the payroll. If you considered signing Juan (Leo) at 5-6 million a year anyway, and just substitute Bell-I think that is a well spent $3 million.

People aren't happy with the signing because its an overpay for a guy who will give you 65 innings max, who already regressed last year, who is signed through his age 37 season and whos perception was greatly enhanced due to pitching in the best pitchers park in the league.

Hensley, Webb, Mujica, Leblanc and Bell? Beinfest and co must have forgotten what park effects are.

I like Bell better than Broxton because Broxton is a big question mark just coming off elbow surgery. And yeah, the Phillies made a big splash of a presser with Papelbon, so the Marlins must do the same with Bell. Also, I could do without Cishek, unless he can learn how to field his position, which I'm pretty sure he missed the boat on in Little League.

Thoughts on this signing:

1) It will be regretted

2) What is a closer for when you are trotting Volstad, Nolasco, Hand, Sanabia, etc. to the mound?

3) Ceda's minor league numbers suggest he can do as well if not better than Bell. I'd give him the shot.

4) The over/under on blown saves for 2012 for Bell is 7.
