Marlins Interested in Rays' Wade Davis

"The Marlins are interested in Rays right-hander Wade Davis, tweets Troy Renck of the Denver Post. With Matt Moore, David Price, Jeremy Hellickson as untouchables and the Rays seemingly determined to keep James Shields, Davis and Jeff Niemann are the most likely Rays pitchers to be moved, if the club does indeed try to deal from its pitching surplus. The inter-Florida rivals have already completed one (lower-profile) trade this offseason, involving righty Burke Badenhop. "

Any thoughts? He is an innings eater. I would certainly welcome him in for depth maybe? I'd still want in on Gio.

they're gonna keep him.

Price/shields/Davis/hellickson/more... why would they break that up? That's an amazing rotation

Because they have Jeff Niemann as well who is a lot more quiet but actually had a better year than Davis. Either way, with Moore set to take a spot they have 6 starters and only 5 slots, and even with one of those gone they still have capable spot starters in the organization.

ok so they'll throw Davis in the pen for a year and then trade him for Wade LeBlanc.

they have no reason to trade any of their pitchers.

That's not how the Rays do it. They are smart (much smarter than the Marlins), and if you're a smart team you are going to trade a player when they are a surplus at their position and their value is high. Davis has good stuff, and while his numbers aren't all star caliber, they have been consistently solid his entire major league career. He's better than most staff's #3, and before we signed Buehrle he was easily better than our number 3.

Nevermind that these rumors of trades aren't just speculation, the Rays are indeed actively shopping starting pitching.

I know you love the Rays, but he really isn't.

Instead of trading for a mediocre pitcher, why not just sign someone on the FA market? I'm not for trades, at the moment; there are still plenty of solid pitchers in free agency who can fill the need, and we wouldn't have to give up any assets to acquire them.

Let's go JOE! Saunders, that is...
