I don't know if I'd count on them making some big FA signing on another SP next season, even with all the available names. They've still got Stanton and Morrison contracts to deal with eventually. Personally I'm really hoping Brad Hand can make it into the rotation.

 

 

I don't see what this has to do with anything. Stanton and Morrison still have 4 years before they can become FA. Therefore it would be a really good move to sign Oswalt to a one year deal and use him as a stop-gap. The good thing is it makes us flexible.

 

uhh. I'm in total agreement on Oswalt. I'm talking about the other posts that see us going after big free agents like Matt Cain after next season. And why would they wait 4 years before locking Stanton up? He'll cost the entire state of Florida by then.

ONLY REASON Oakland is trading Gio is because he is going to get expensive on them fast starting with this year which I believe he is Arb Eligible. Teams don't trade pitchers like him EVER unless they are in a fire sale or DUMPING salary which is the A's case. I'd trade a hitting prospect anyday of the week for a YOUNG elite Starting pitcher unless we are talking a young phenom like a Mike Stanton or a Joey Votto on the cheap (just an example.) But if all it takes to get Gio is trading Logan Morrison plus 2-3 of our top ten prospects DO IT! The Tigers gave us Maybin AND a bunch of other pieces for Miguel and Willis, how did that turn out for them? Ok, maybe a bad example, but what I'm saying is players like Gio Gonzalez are special, and don't come around often. He is a local kid from Hialeah Florida I believe, and he will only get better. OH YEAH, and he is a lefty! Exactly what WE NEED. And BTW after doing some research Gio is actually a 7.3 WAR over the past Four seasons! I say we do it, at all cost, AND YES I'd still go after Roy Oswalt after the fact. Time to go ALL OUT. PITCHING AND DEFENSE WINS PEOPLE! PLUS Prospects don't always pan out. Time to get the sure thing.

 

They're trading him because he's the only quality piece they have and they're shaping up to be the worst team in baseball. It's a team that is clearly building for 2013 and beyond. And we don't have the pieces to get him. If we offer Morrison, Yelich (our best prospect according to BA) and James and the Nats offer up Brad Peacock, Derek Norris, and someone else, we lose. Easily.

He was talking about how Fielder is not what they're looking for, but rather looking at FA pitching along with exploring trades. He made it seem as if they would focus on Cespedes after after they address the starting rotation.

After waiting until spring training and failing to land a job to his satisfaction, free agent pitcher Roy Oswalt has told major league clubs that he might pull a Roger Clemens and return midseason, according to a baseball source.

 

Oswalt, 34, has told teams that he plans to keep throwing, stay ready and would be willing to return during the season if nothing materializes before then. That approach would mirror what Clemens did in 2006 and 2007, when he returned in June to pitch for the Houston Astros and then the New York Yankees.

 

Oswalt's second-half track record suggests that signing the pitcher at midseason might be a coup. According to ESPN Stats & Information, of the 84 pitchers who were active at the end of last season, Oswalt has the best career winning percentage (.739) after the All-Star break (minimum 50 starts).

 

Oswalt's agent, Bob Garber, has told media outlets that Oswalt is planning to make an announcement Thursday, but provided no further details. Garber didn't respond to phone calls or texts for this story.

 

Oswalt is 159-93 with three All-Star appearances in 11 seasons with Houston and thePhiladelphia Phillies. The Boston Red Sox, St. Louis Cardinals and Texas Rangers are among the clubs that expressed interest in Oswalt this offseason, but weren't able to fit him into their budget or starting rotation.
