Posted December 20, 201113 yr Roy Oswalt was looking for a three-year deal earlier in the offseason, but he has since told teams he only wants a one-year contract, according to ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick (all Twitterlinks). The right-hander wants to prove that his back is healthy and re-enter the market a year from now in search of multiyear security. Six teams are now talking to Oswalt and agent Bob Garber about a possible deal, Crasnick reports. The Red Sox, Blue Jays, Royals, Twins and Nationals are among the teams that could use rotation depth and may have interest in Oswalt. The Rockies had interest earlier in the offseason and while they could still use pitching depth, it's not clear if they still have the payroll flexibility to accommodate Oswalt or if he'd want to pitch in Denver. Garber has said Oswalt feels “great, even after two back-related stints on the disabled list in 2011. The 34-year-old made 23 starts and completed 139 innings this past season, posting a 3.69 ERA with 6.0 K/9, 2.1 BB/9 and a 45.1% ground ball rate. His average fastball velocity dropped to 91.4 mph, however. Oswalt was a Type A free agent, but the Phillies declined to offer him arbitration and he won't cost a draft pick. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2011/12/oswalt-seeks-one-year-deal-interest-picks-up.html?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter Would you be interested now?
December 20, 201113 yr I could see him being used as a stop gap if the price is right, and then go after someone in 2013.
December 20, 201113 yr Author where in the rotation will he be slotted in, If he signs here? 4th or 5th. JJ Buehrle Sanchez Oswalt/Nolsaco Nolasco/Oswalt
December 20, 201113 yr This should be a priority for the Marlins. It's probable that Javy doesn't come back, so Oswalt for one year suits the team's needs perfectly.

December 20, 201113 yr where in the rotation will he be slotted in, If he signs here? 4th or 5th. JJ Buehrle Sanchez Oswalt/Nolsaco Nolasco/Oswalt I'd say he's at least a number 3. He's definitely better than Nolasco.

He's definitely better than Nolasco. Perhaps, but I like him as a 4 or 5 to help round out the rotation. If anything he can be moved up to a 3 depending on how the season goes, similar to Javy last year.
December 20, 201113 yr I'm generally of the belief that the rotation order doesn't really matter much over the course of a full season. I guess I'm speaking more toward him being the third best starter (or possibly second).
December 20, 201113 yr This is perfect for us. I bet we'll probably be the highest bidders on him for a 1 year deal.
December 20, 201113 yr I wonder how a deal for Oswalt would look. My guess is something like $7-9M with $4-5M more in incentives?
December 20, 201113 yr However looking at his peripherals, Oswalt did have his lowest K/9 and highest WHIP of his career. I wonder how much of that can be attributed to playing through injury and just natural decline. Because his 2010 year was one of his best ever.
December 20, 201113 yr get him signed up - nice stop for him as well to come in and rehab his image a little bit on a one year stint come check out the brand new facilities, throw in a pitchers park and sit towards the back of the rotation
December 20, 201113 yr makes a ton of sense, not to mention the guy would be on a mission to get a big deal a year later. Even if injuries pop up, it's only a 1 year deal. I think it's fine to overpay here actually. Rounds out the rotation really well and if could keep us afloat in case of other staff injuries.
