February 12, 201214 yr I think Loria is actually a pretty good owner, and that he loves this team. He's said all along that when they got a new stadium he would spend. I just cant see him selling now. I think now he's excited and really wants to win and throw it in everyones face that talked sh*t in the past. And dude is at pretty much every game, how many other owners do that?
February 13, 201214 yr I think he would have sold the team had the stadium deal fallen apart. But now he has this brand-new stadium, and I think he enjoys the prestige of the stadium and the new team and everything. Is it impossible that he would sell in the next 5 years? No. But I don't believe that's been the plan from the beginning. More than likely he realized that he needed to attract some (positive) attention to the team this offseason to kick off the new look and home of the team in 2012. So that's why he brought in these FAs. Plus I can almost guarantee that he's following the Miami Heat's example by trying to play up to the city being an 'event town', and thus it's crucial to have some big names on the team.
February 13, 201214 yr People also forget that Loria is 71. He appears to be a healthy 71, but a lot can change over the course of 5 years.
February 13, 201214 yr People also forget that Loria is 71. He appears to be a healthy 71, but a lot can change over the course of 5 years. Really? 71? Damn. Doesn't look it to be honest.
February 13, 201214 yr 71 wow I hope I look that young at 71.... Don't think he will sell team. I think this park is his baby.. It's got his fingerprints all over it with all the art going on.
February 13, 201214 yr People also forget that Loria is 71. He appears to be a healthy 71, but a lot can change over the course of 5 years. Any heir apparent? Or just shorty twice removed by divorce??
February 13, 201214 yr I wonder if Samson would inherit the team. EX STEP son is Samson. That's why I asked if there is an heir apparent. Anybody know of any family? Daughter? Nephew? Niece? I hear speculation a while back, maybe more than a few years, that Samson was kept on because EX Mrs. Loria still had $ in the team. Implication there was a string attached to keeping the $ in the team or control. Anybody know any truth to this stuff????
February 13, 201214 yr It doesn't matter exactly what family he has, since Loria's property will surely be passed via will, in which he can name any beneficiaries he chooses.
February 27, 201214 yr Author Apparently Loria is very excited about this upcoming season and has no thoughts of selling the team anytime in the near future... Though what else do you expect him to say. During his chat with media Sunday, Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria was asked how much longer he would own the Marlins. Loria, 71, doesn’t appear close to soliciting bids for his increasingly valuable franchise. “I never even thought of that question, Loria said. “As long as I live. I love this team. Things happen in life. You never know, but we’re going full speed ahead this year. Phil Rogers of the Chicago Tribune wrote in a column earlier this month that some skeptics believe Loria will sell as soon as 2014 and make a play for the New York Mets. Loria’s primary residence is in New York City. The club’s stadium agreement with Miami-Dade County and the City of Miami has a “Payment Upon Sale of Team provision. It states that if Loria sells more than a 50 percent stake in the club within a certain time frame, the county and city would receive a percentage equity payment. The payout period is seven years from the start of construction, so after three years of the ballpark’s operational phase Loria is free to sell a controlling interest and would not have to share profits. If Loria sells during years five, six or seven, he would have to payout 10 percent, 7.5 percent and 5 percent, respectively. http://blogs.sun-sen...ashing-out.html
February 27, 201214 yr I believe every word. He's not going anywhere, he has no reason to with all the time and energy he's invested in this team getting the ballpark, etc. If he WAS the 58 he looked, I think maybe it's different. But at his age, no way.
February 28, 201214 yr As messed up as it is saying this considering without Huizinga we wouldn't have had a team, Loria's been our best owner and has tried to stand behind the team and put his money where his mouth was in the past hoping the fans will come. In 2003, he shelled out for pudge and when fans didn't really come out until the post season he didn't resign him and traded lee for a bit of salary relief. (Pudges Contract was asinine BTW for a catcher past his prime). He did it again in 2005 with a big signing in Delgado and it bombed. He rebuilt the team pretty well and got us the Ballpark as well. He can sell the team if he wants, but unlike most fans in Montreal I'd be sad to see him go. He learned from his mistakes in Montreal, and is building a CONSISTANT winner here in Miami. If only the Panthers were as well run from 2000 to now instead of just the last year under Tallon.
