Marlins name Tino Martinez hitting coach

Featured Replies

Playing days have nothing to do with ability to coach.

Who said it did?

I said "We don't know for sure that Martinez can coach what he obviously knows how to do, but he has to be an improvement on total uselessness, no matter how bad he may be at coaching."

The Tino hiring came from the top perhaps Loria? Not Redmond's.

Ah sh*t, he's Loria's guy?

f***, our guys are gonna hit like .210 this year combined.

We hit .244 this year which was a franchise low.

Can't possibly be worse than Perez.

271/344/471/815 over 15 years indicates that he has a pretty good clue about how to hit. His peak year was 296/371/577/948. 503 PAs per year over 16 years of mostly full-time play. Perez never had more than 330 PAs in 13 years and averaged 157/year.

Nepotism sucks. Hiring actual talent is better. We don't know for sure that Martinez can coach what he obviously knows how to do, but he has to be an improvement on total uselessness, no matter how bad he may be at coaching.

One of the most popular phrases in the world is "those who can't do, teach"

I can't throw a curveball, but I could teach someone how. Does that make me a bad pitcher, yes. A bad coach- nope.

Except that Eduardo Perez wasn't as terrible as everyone said he was, but ok.

I don't know how much blame you can put on Perez for the Marlins offensive shortcomings... But someone has to be the scapegoat. I am fine with this, Tino was a professional hitter just like Redmond and I'm sure he'll be able to teach these guys something.

Eduardo was most likely the only cause of Lomo's and Sanchez's demise. Each hitter is different, you can't try to change their approach before they have matured at that level without ruining the basic foundation of what got them there.

Trying to get Lomo to hit for more power, when he was a On Base guy killed him the past 2 years. You gotta let him hit for power after he gets the pitch he wants. I'll be okay with a 10 HR, 280 average from Lomo if he OBP 360-400.

That line is pretty underwhelming for a LF/1B. That's not any better than Gaby was either.

He'd get on base, which is the hope. Right now he was batting 240 something and hardly walking IIRC.

it's not going to be any WORSE than Eduardo and it's also not like there was some premium hitting coach out there on the market (other than Big Mac maybe who wouldn't come here anyway)....Tino was always considered a good leader in the clubhouse as well during his NY days so here's hoping that translates into a solid coach. In the end I highly doubt he'll be any worse than Eduardo.

In an effort to ease Tino Martinez, who's never coached, into coaching the Marlins are going to start him off with their minor league team in Miami. This will be the Marlins AAAA team
