Comparing 2013 to 2006

Featured Replies

Another fun fact that hasn't been discussed here is that Josh Johnson wasn't even a great prospect, ever. He was a top-80 prospect according to BA prior to '06 as he was really never truly elite in the minors/never truly elite period before Tommy John.

John Sickel's on Josh Johnson after the 2004 season: "Josh Johnson suffers from the fact that his name is "Josh Johnson." If he had a more eye-catching name (Lance Powers, or Noble Valentine, or anything more interesting than "Josh Johnson") he'd get more attention."

I've always found it to be an interesting point.I think that's kind of ridiculous. Dan Cooley Uggla had a strong name and it never got him anywhere until he finally got a real shot. How does your name generate more interest?

Simple, look at Coco Crisp, Milton Bradley, Pokey Reese, K'ila K'hila'lua''la'ua, Jarrod Saltalamacchia, and Jeff Smardizja. Each one of them is a sure-fire first-ballot Hall of Famer. You'll see.

You don't have any reasoning to speak of. None.

Basically you are just making excuses. It's Fredi Gonzalez's fault. It's Jerry Manuel's fault. It's Ike Davis' fault. It's the fault of steroids testing. It's the DH's fault. It's the American League's fault. It's the fault of everyone and everything that Mike Jacobs sucks except for Mike Jacobs.

Either you are trolling or you are a family member/friend of Jacobs.

No connection to Jacobs but I could be considered a troll if not being a regular poster qualifies me as one. I think I made a reasonable case. I suggested a player from the era of discussion who could've supplied some good bang for the buck in the coming season. I don't think I made any false statements.

That was a powerful infield in 2008 and none of them were great fielders. Jacobs never attained full time status because Fredi's micro-management included providing playing time for his Braves' bench buddy and clubhouse enforcer, Wes Helms, who couldn't hit his way out of a paper bag or come in on a slow roller for that matter. I just wonder if not for the promise of Gaby Sanchez, they might've paid Jacobs for a year or two or if he had other issues not readily discernable.

The consensus is it's mostly lack of talent but I suggest either Jacobs just seems to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, is a total jerk or was a known long time juicer. I'd take his 2008 stats from 1st base this coming season but it wasn't meant to be.

You made a false statement when you suggested Mike Jacobs would be an impact this upcoming season. It's 2013, not 2009.

Jacobs never attained full time status because Fredi's micro-management included providing playing time for his Braves' bench buddy and clubhouse enforcer, Wes Helms, who couldn't hit his way out of a paper bag or come in on a slow roller for that matter.

In 2006, he had full time status. Helms came in mostly as a pinch hitter or defensive replacement at first or third, with the occasional spot start [to give you an idea, he had 88 games at first, but only started in 42 of those]. Jacobs started the other 120 games at first base that season, 124 total at first.

In 2007, Helms was in Philly. Aaron Boone was our backup first baseman that year, started 46 games, but didn't Jacobs have an injury at one point that year with his wrist or something? Either way, full time status.

In 2008, Jacobs has 119 games at first base, again, if I remember right, had a slight injury that year, but he still played in a lot more games than 07 [141 to 114]. Full time status. Then he was traded. The lowest PA amount he had in that 3 year span was 460, in 2007. That may be just under full time, but 06 and 08, 520 and 519 PAs, that's full time.

The Wes Helms who couldn't hit his way out of a paper bag [and it's wet paper bag, the analogy you're looking for] didn't really come around until 2010. 2006 he was great, 2008 had a bit of a dip, but 2009 was solid.

And Jacobs couldn't come in on a slow roller, either, for what it's worth.

Jacobs and Hermida were poorly managed by Gonzalez. But so were Uggla, the 2 Ramirez and everyone else. Some players were just better.

You don't have any reasoning to speak of. None.

The error of your ways is making excuses for Jacobs' terrible performance and not giving an unbiased analysis.

You are actually making even more excuses--blaming Helms and Gaby Sanchez now for Jacobs' poor production.

The Marlins didn't have a great fielding infield in 2008, but Jacobs was statistically the worst of them by far despite playing the easiest of the four positions. When defense is that bad at first base, the bat needs to be tremendous to compensate for it. 32 home runs is not enough when the rest of his stat line sucked. In 2008 he was an -0.7 WAR player--that's below replacement player status. Statistically he was the worst 1B in MLB in 2008. But by your account, that's not his fault.

They basically could've signed Mark Reynolds if they just wanted some homers while doing everything else poorly - would've been the same thing. Look the Marlins traded Jake to the Royals, if even KC let him go there's not much left to say.

This is why I don't post here. Nobody ever agreed with me about anything on the marlins.mlb board back in the day and I wasn't up to messing with you guys on the big board. It's really hard to make a case for a marginal player anyway but at least Jacobs was good enough to unload Delgado's contract and later provided a closer for two seasons. I wish Jacobs well and hopefully Seattle management will consider him as an option to the weak hitting Smoak rather than just organizational depth.

If you hold an unpopular opinion on a player and you only justify it by making a dozen biased excuses in that player's favor, expect to catch heat on any message board you visit.

Nobody minds that you are a Mike Jacobs fan, but if you are going to act like Jacobs had a miserable career for a dozen reasons outside of his own power, you look really dumb and set yourself up for ridicule.

Jarfmar just signed on and you barely know him. There's plenty of room to just disagree. Ridiculing someone you don't know won't improve the discussion.

I can't get the stats up on my phone right now, but I believe Smoak just might be better than Jacobs all-around, plus they traded for Kendrys Morales, so first base is clogged up.

Huh? I'm just speaking in the context of what he said. He's making a ton of excuses for Jacobs sucking--I'm addressing his lack of reasoning. I don't need to "know" him to do that.
