January 4, 201313 yr Reggie Abercrombie was our opening day center fielder that year. Ah, Reggie Abercrombie. Your 500 foot homer in Cincinnati lives on in memory. And is probably the only thing you cling on to at this point. And don't forget, the 2006 team had Renyel Pinto. If we don't have a Renyel Pinto this year, that's worth, like ... eleventy wins! Eric Reed (he was really fast) was the OD starter that year. EDIT: And Pinto had a 3.03 ERA that year. He only gave up runs in 5 of his 27 apperances. 2 of them were in wins and the other 3 were loses before he went into the game. He had 1 save, 3 holds, 0 blown saves, and 0 loses.ERA too high for lefty reliever. And it's been like 7 years, I don't remember the opening day starter in center. I remember De Aza in 07, though.

January 4, 201313 yr Author I just read the article. Frisaro says this: Nolasco projects to be the ace of Miami's '13 squad. I mean, how is the 2013 rotation supposed to mirror 2006's if that's the case? I suspect that a couple of the starters will outperform Nolasco, but that's not really the point. The offense isn't as good, but I really don't see the huge differential in pitching, to be honest. 2013's pitching staff will come in unproven much like the 2006 version. Dontrelle had a great '05, but was unspectacular in '06. I feel like it's rather difficult to project young pitchers with limited to no experience. Also, while the starters performed beyond expectations that year, the pitching staff, as a whole, was just a bit better than league average that year because the bullpen was terrible. I feel like the pitching has a decent chance of not being terrible next year.

January 4, 201313 yr Author Also, it's worth noting that, while the offense had more upside, a lot of unexpected things happened that year ('06) with that offense. I think the point of the article is that the team is basically hoping the young players this year unexpectedly progress rapidly as was the case in '06.

Rome wasn't destroyed in a day either. And if it had been, its citizens probably wouldn't be very patient when it came to rebuilding it again...and again...

I feel like the pitching has a decent chance of not being terrible next year. In 2013, I think that we can project not to be too impressed by Nolasco (we know him already), Eovaldi (many see him as a reliever anyway), and Anderson Perez (his peripherals really sucked last year), and the 5th guy--maybe Le Blanc (career 4.43 ERA as a starter). Outside of Turner--who I think should be pretty good--I think that there was understandably much more upside with the 2006 core of Johnson, Sanchez, and Willis (he might have regressed but I highly doubt any 2013 starter gives us a 3.87 ERA over 200+ innings other than maybe Turner). The 2006 staff was definitely better talent-wise on paper. However, I do think that the 2013 pen will be better but that won't be enough to compensate for the weaker rotation and the much worse lineup. I think they'll easily lose 90+ games.

I think the point of the article is that the team is basically hoping the young players this year unexpectedly progress rapidly as was the case in '06. What unexpected things? Dan Uggla was a Rule 5 pick, but his minor league numbers were pretty good. The belief was that he was just blocked in Arizona (to be fair Ruggiano does have the potential to follow that fate). I don't think that anybody really "overperformed" unexpectedly other than maybe Wes Helms (only over 300 PAs though). Arguably the offense could have been even better if Hermida had met expectations.
January 4, 201313 yr the comparison may ultimately work better with the 2014 opening day roster (or even late 2013) rather than 2013 opening day, this is sort of an unfinished product. Add Fernandez, Yelich, another SP, maybe Dietrich to the group and then we're a little closer to what the '06 team looked like. Polanco, Pierre, LeBlanc, Nolasco, these guys almost certainly won't be around next season.
January 4, 201313 yr Dontrelle had a great '05, but was unspectacular in '06. You guys wanna hear something? Detroit offered Curtis Granderson and Justin Verlander for Dontrelle after the 2005 season.
January 4, 201313 yr I was hoping they'd bring Jacobs back. The guy has been in the minors for three years and he can outhit quite a few 1st basemen who've been playing in the majors. Had anyone suggested that before Seattle signed him to yet another minor league deal? Is this guy poison or what?

Had anyone suggested that before Seattle signed him to yet another minor league deal? Is this guy poison or what? Jacobs is a 0.0 WAR (replacement level player) at best because he is so horrible defensively and his bat isn't even to compensate for it. In other words, he's absolutely terrible and his no place in MLB.

However, that's not even close to what the 2013 team is--a core of a ton of guys with litte upside: Hechavarria, Pierre, LeBlanc, Nolasco, Anderson Perez, Solano, Polanco, etc. None of those guys are likely to contribute much, which is why I think that it's silly to think that next year will somehow mirror 2006.

It's a success when you consider the expectations of the team prior to the season. I suppose if you have low expectations, that would be true. Back then I guess I bought into the whole rebuilding thing. Now? I'm damn tired of watching my team lose. I just can't buy into the rebuilding thing again. 2006 didn't turn into anything at all. Where are the playoff teams that came from it? None.
January 5, 201313 yr Dontrelle had a great '05, but was unspectacular in '06. You guys wanna hear something? Detroit offered Curtis Granderson and Justin Verlander for Dontrelle after the 2005 season. I knew Beinfest still has his job for a reason!

Yelich and Fernandez could be promoted mid-season, to be fair. Also, Hechevarria and Anderson Perez project to be a part of this team's core for awhile so I certainly hope they turn out to be more than "guys with little upside."

I didn't expect Hanley to put up the #'s he put up his rookie year. There were question marks about him. Uggla was still a rule V guy; he was not expected to do what he did that year and beyond. As a matter of fact, he only got the opportunity because Pokey Reese decided to leave. The lineup was entirely unproven and everyone except Hermida met and or played well above expectations that year. That team was supposed to lose over 100 games.
