Defensive Stat

Featured Replies

Among all major league position players...

#5 = Giancarlo Stanton, 1.18 Defensive WAR

#6 = Marcell Ozuna, 0.91 Defensive WAR

Per ESPN.

Our outfield is pretty good, for sure. Surprised McGehee isn't positive.

I was surprised too.

Fangraphs DEF stat has him at 1.9, so he's been above average.

Wait, I thought WAR was an opinion.

I still think it's an opinion. But I clearly stated I agree with the method and purpose.

Opinion: a view or judgment formed about something, not necessarily based on fact or knowledge

Whether you guys agree with the methods around determining WAR and other statistics similar to it, the bottom line is that it IS based on facts and knowledge.

My opinion is that Dodger Stadium is a great place to watch a baseball game.

A fact is that Dodger Stadium is in the Elysian Park area of Los Angeles.

My opinion is that the orange Marlins jerseys are horrible.

A fact is that Adeiny Hechavarria is horrible.

See what I did there, guys? See how I brought Adeiny into it?

No just your opinion and that of a few others here. Hill, Redmond, the Marlins front office, and most importantly me, say the opposite. Adeiny is a valuable asset at his age, given what he is paid, and with his skills. Try to refrain from repeating this nonsense and stop snorting shredded baseball stats its not going to help you see the game any better.

Not to split hairs, but it's actually a statistical fact he was the single worst all around player in mlb last year and not much better this year, but whatever facts are stoopid so long as he looks good doing it! Who really hits balls up the middle anyway.

I understand the idea of the eye test and I get that Hech often makes things look good. The problem is that there isn't a single statistic that says he's even mediocre. Even the eye test says he's a bad baserunner and a bad hitter, so the only thing he has going for him is his defense. If you refuse to look at stats, I can understand why you'd see him as a plus defender, the problem is that EVERY defensive metric paints him in a strongly negative light. Derek Jeter gets away with looking good but being bad by being an excellent hitter, Hech is basically a second pitcher in the lineup.

What skills does Adieny have exactly? He couldn't even take a selfie correctly, see the "hallway or bathroom towel rack" controversy.

Ahhh yes. The FO. The ones that signed Furcal, Dobbs, and Marmol. Clearly their eye for baseball is elite.

They also signed Salty, swapped LoMo for Jones and added Capps, signed McGehee, kept Ozuna in the majors after a terrible spring, put Koehler in the rotation over Hand, etc. Those MANY good decisions outweigh the two bad decisions you suggested (Dobbs wasn't their idea).

The front office did an unbelievable job this past winter and they deserve credit.

They overpaid for saltalamacchia(and he has been quickly falling back to earth after that uncharacteristic April) and neglected to get him a suitable platoon partner, which he desperately needs

If you believe they overpaid for Salty then your concept of business in baseball is zero.

I know it's popular to dislike Wild Card's posts, and it's often for good reason, but I do agree with him here.

The front office did a pretty good job this past offseason all things considered. Also, Saltalamacchia might be frustrating at times, but he's a huge upgrade over the turd we had last year. Saltalamacchia wasn't overpaid.

Agreed. Salty was a good deal. We would need 5 WAR or so from him total over the next 3 years to get fair value on his contract. I'm pretty sure he'll top that number with ease.

Good point. They have made good moves, but I can't credit them the same way for putting Koehler in the rotation over Hand. Hand is terrible and even they know that.

Hand had a strong triple-A season in 2013 and a very strong spring. He made it very tempting for them, considering he would have been our only LHP starter instead of the third lefty in the pen. But they stuck with Koehler anyway, which was not a popular decision amongst this board. I am very glad they did, and they do deserve credit for that.

They even deserve credit for cutting their loses on their bad decisions quickly. Dobbs, Marmol, and Henry Rodriguez are already gone.

I think you are patting them on the back too much. They did make some good decisions, but there are some really dumb ones that most other teams probably wouldn't make.

The way that they handled the Ryan Webb arbitration is downright infuriating. He would be a great asset for the pen right now and they basically spent half of his would-be salary on Marmol "because they thought they could fix him." They tried to do things on the cheap and it was predictably a bad decision.

The $3.5 million they are spending on Furcal shouldn't be downplayed, either. That was a waste of money even if he wasn't having injury problems. It just shows how dumb they are for not wanting to spend a little bit of money on a solid reliever but have no problem wasting it on Furcal and Marmol.

I agree with you 100% on Webb and 66% on Furcal. Letting Webb just walk so they could sign trash was stupid. I agreed with the idea of signing Furcal, however I did not agree with giving him the starting job from day one and I did not agree with the price. He should have been in competition with Dietrich, and more of an insurance plan, but whatever since things worked out anyway.

Spending $3.5 million on a bench player who is 36 with an injury history is probably just as idiotic as what the Marlins wanted to do with him. The Marlins had no need for Furcal, especially at that price. But I guess that you are the guy who thinks that it's ok to spend $3.5 million on a player just to be a veteran "mentor" to younger players.

I also wouldn't pat them on the back for the Garrett Jones thing. He was available and they are getting him for basically the sticker price. It's not like he's a diamond in the rough or anything. More importantly, however, is the fact that they are misusing him by giving him far too many at bats against LHP. He already has twice as many as the Pirates gave him over the entirety of last season.

Do you even read what I post before you respond? I said that I agree they paid too much. The only thing I liked about the signing was having an insurance policy and adding depth to a weak position.

On Jones, they're certainly getting a bargain thus far. He may level out, but so far so good.

I was referring back to things you've said in the past. You previously insinuated that $3.5 million was acceptable for a veteran mentor. You also seemed to like it for stronger reasons that you are stating here. Either way, it's probably unlikely that the Marlins would have been able to sign him for any less so that's kind of a pointless thing for you to say.

I also wouldn't call Jones a bargain, although the offense is decent. He's basically a platoon bat at the least scarce position (where he doesn't even play good defense). Even with 8 HR on the season now he doesn't have a tremendous amount of value.

The problem with Jones is they're not platooning him. He's absolutely crushing righties this year really and doing terrible agaisnt lefties (surprise surprise). If they would just platoon him already he'd actually be really nice value thus far despite his really bad defense. I mean even with him basically starting every day he's given us 1 WAR which pretty much is what his contract is worth.
