I just need more convincing that's all...Stats are suppose to put performance on a level and fair playing field. We cannot watch all 30 3rd basemen in the majors at the same time everyday. Stats provide us with a balanced comparison but when you get Pedro Alvarez who leads the majors in error with 17 having a better D-WAR than Casey McGehee because of RF...you have to question the ruler that is providing the measurements. In this case you have to look at ground ball % of the Pirates Pitching as a confounding factor. I say that because Alvarez has almost 100 TC (total chances) more than McGehee and there lies your range factor difference. RF has the assumption that probability-wise throughout a full season that McGehee, Alvarez and all 3rd baseman in a large sample size should have approximate equal balls hit in their direction. Is that necessarily the case?

By the way, I'm surprised that the poll is so close. Even if you think a case could be made for Alvarez/McGehee, the answer is clearly Cishek. The only closers having a better year than Cishek in the NL are K-Rod and Huston Street. And the K-Rod part is sort of debatable.

And I agree, I voted Cishek and originally said he was the only shoe-in. But McGehee and Alvarez should have an obvious case.

And does Pedro fucking Alvarez really have better range than Casey McGehee? Impossible. I think that should be agreed upon by everyones "eye test".

Every time you use the phrase "eye test" it invalidates any argument you might have

The people who compile these stats do watch every play of every game. For a look at the process Google meter vs Brendan ryan

Oh boy

Wild Card gonna Wild Card

Do each of you feel Pedro Alvarez is a superior third baseman to Casey McGehee? Just your opinions, no numbers. Honestly.

I don't watch Pedro Alvarez play every day.

From what you have seen.

I've only seen a small sample so it shouldn't matter.

But of that small sample, what's your opinion?

I've seen him make some throwing errors which is irrelevant to the context of the discussion (range).

The question was, based on soley your opinion, who is the better defensive third baseman.

I don't recall that being the question, but my answer is that neither one is all that good. Mcgehee's range is terrible.

So the bottom line is you refuse to answer the question. Is that right? Because your personal opinion probably doesn't agree with the numbers, amiright?

I did answer the question. Casey Mcgehee is not a good defensive 3B either.

I don't care about the numbers. Numbers are just an opinion with a statistical basis. :)

That's not an answer. The question was, in your opinion, who is the better defensive third baseman? McGehee or Alvarez? It's one or the other.

WTF does it matter? I don't just base my opinions on watching a guy for a couple of games. Based on a couple of games, I can't really tell who's better with the all-irrelevant "eye test." Based on the first handful of games of the season, Adeiny Hechavarria was the best SS in baseball. Does it matter?

My answer is that your eyes are beautiful and I wish I had them. Can you stop saying dumb things now?

Bryan Morris still hasn't allowed an earned run in a Marlins uniform. Based on his 9 appearances, I would take this guy over Mariano Rivera. Seriously, Mariano who?

Why can't anybody just answer the question? Why are you so afraid of having your own opinion?
