June 22, 201412 yr Why can't anybody just answer the question? Why are you so afraid of having your own opinion? I did answer the question.
June 22, 201412 yr He did answer. He hasnt seen enough of Alvarez to know if he is good defensively but he has seen enough of McGehee to know he is bad.
June 23, 201412 yr Author That's not an answer. There are only two possible answers, MCGEHEE or ALVAREZ. That's it. Which is better, your opinion. Clearly none of you want to answer it because Alvarez is obviously terrible and McGehee is not. At least not obviously. Go on a Pirates forum and ask about Pedro Alvarez's defense. He should have been their solution to first base, but their GM is dumb.
June 23, 201412 yr Author You are the worst of the worst. Why don't you provide your opinion? Who do you feel is better? Why can't anyone just answer a simple question?
June 23, 201412 yr That is a valid answer. You ask who you think is better...he answers that he hasnt seen enough of Alvarez to really make a judgement on him, but that he has seen enough of McGehee to know that he is not good defensively. He went on to answer that he has seen enough of both to say that he doesnt think either are good defensively. If he doesnt think either one is good defensively, then saying which one is "better" is fairly arbitrary.

If you have a T/F question on a test, you can't just go and say "well, I don't think it is true, but it's not entirely false". It's a one or the other question. You can explain why after, but if the answer isn't stated as one or the other in than no, you haven't answered the question. Not that it's a very fair question, given, but that's another matter. As for me I couldn't answer the "eye test" question due to seeing Alvarez play a total of 0 times, but if you were to insist the answer is quite clearly McGahee as being the worse defender. Not having the range to get to a ball makes up for a lot more missed opportunities. Think about it... If one person is able to get to 50 more balls than another in a season, but makes, say, 17 errors, they still contributed 33 more outs than the other, even if the other converted every play he got to. Simply put, range is a much bigger factor for good defensive play than a sure glove or arm in pretty much every infield station except 1b and C. Just mho.
June 23, 201412 yr Voted for Hendy. When your ace goes down, you'll need someone to step up and Hendy has done that and some. With the struggles lately with starting pitching, his dominance only reassures my prior statement.

But Alvarez wasn't able to get to more balls because of range necessarily, he's simply had a lot more balls hit to him in general. If you have seen Pedro Alvarez play third base, it's a pretty obvious answer. Unfortunately you haven't seen him play, but this IS this reason why everyone I have asked this question to has failed to provide an opinion. They're scared to offer an opinion of their own that is not backed by statistics. The right answer is McGehee is better, and if you have seen either play, it shouldn't even be close.
June 23, 201412 yr Statistics are all anyone has to go by because they havent seen much of Alvarez. I personally live in Cardinal AND Cub(as well as being on the tertiary of the Reds) territory so I see the Pirates quate often. Having watched both, while Pedro Alvarez is not a great or even good 3B, he is better than McGehee. Unless its hit right at McGehee, he is not fielding it. Either way, it is an arbitrary argument because at the end of the day they are both pretty terrible at 3B. And you continue to be a complete moron who shows a complete lack of even basic understanding about the game of baseball.

June 23, 201412 yr You are the worst of the worst. What the fuck do you mean by that? I thought I was your one and only.... Heck- Erick even called me a prick!
June 23, 201412 yr What the f*** do you mean by that? I thought I was your one and only.... Heck- Erick even called me a prick! You've been replaced, apparently.

I see the Pirates quite often as well, my wifes entire family is from Pitt, I've been able to see quite a few games on TV and in person. Alvarez doesn't even field what's hit to him, and if he does, he can never make a tougher throw. He is absolutely terrible at 3B. AT LEAST you answered the question and provided your opinion. While I don't agree, I appreciate you not dodging it. BTW... Henderson Alvarez is in the lead for our second All-Star. Crazy!
June 23, 201412 yr It doesnt matter how good or bad Alvarez is because McGehee is terrible as well. So I dont even know what point you are trying to make. They are both awful, one being better than the other is irrelevant to anything.

The point was anyone that's seen them both play would likely disagree with that based on their own sights, thoughts, feelings, etc.
June 23, 201412 yr Author While Alvarez moves OK for a big guy, he's not exactly twinkle toes at the hot corner.
June 23, 201412 yr I don't think it's crazy to conclude that Alvarez has been better. As other's have said, McGehee is fine when the ball is hit right to him, but he has trouble fielding anything outside of that. The stats say that Alvarez is better at getting the hard to reach balls and I find that convincing.
June 23, 201412 yr While Alvarez moves OK for a big guy, he's not exactly twinkle toes at the hot corner. Nobody said he was. In fact, people said the opposite countless times in this thread and you never got it through your thick skull.
June 23, 201412 yr Nobody said he was. In fact, people said the opposite countless times in this thread and you never got it through your thick skull. Yeah but nobody answered his question, therefore everyone must think the extreme that McGehee is in quicksand and Alvarez has the range of an F22.
June 23, 201412 yr Author Yeah but nobody answered his question, therefore everyone must think the extreme that McGehee is in quicksand and Alvarez has the range of an F22. Well, a simple answer would have been suffice. It would have been that easy.
June 23, 201412 yr Well, a simple answer would have been suffice. It would have been that easy. Well, for what it's worth, I do believe Alvarez is the better defender.
June 23, 201412 yr Depending on how they do in the next few weeks, I can see at least two maybe three Marlins on the team. Of the players listed I don't see Ozuna on the team, but any variation of Alvarez, Cishek or McGehee deserve a long look, maybe they'll get added after all the other players drop out!

Spike you have to admit 17 errors vs 3 errors may make you wonder, if the limitation in range is inconsequential. It seems that Alvarez has a problem making plays altogether, regardless if it's hit directly to hit to him or away. I will conclude my thoughts that I am satisfied with McGehee's defense, he has surpassed any and all expectations. He has stabilized the Hot Corner for the Marlins. If his range is limited , so be it . When I talk bad defense on the team I look at Garrett Jones, Dereck Dietrich, Hech, even Salty has had his amount of problems, Mcgehee may not win a GG but he is more than fine by me.
