DolphinJohn
Interesting proposition. http://joefrisaro.mlblogs.com I'd be all for it. I like the way Joe is thinking here. I wonder if the FO agrees…... .
Admin
No, we have more pressing needs. Plus with a 65 mil payroll, we can't allocate so much to the back of the pen. Cishek/Chapman would be earning about 12 mil of that combined.
DolphinJohn
No, we have more pressing needs Yeah, but as Joe points out, Marlins may not be able to get the starter they want to add. I think if they could somehow get Chapman and Carlos "Oye Como Va?" Santana they would be in pretty good shape. .
DolphinJohn
Joe Frisaro is so dumb brah. I tend to agree but holy hell would that be a scary bullpen for the rest of the league to have to face. .

SilverBullet
Not a horrible idea but its pretty unecessary. I love that KC bullpen as much as the next guy but it seems like every other team is suddenly toying with copying this idea. And even if multiple teams went with this plan, it won't work for everyone. Its already an overblown idea despite it's success in KC this year. I guess, at worst, its an idea to keep in the back of the FO's mind but its not really important right now.

SongInTheAir
No. Closers are a dime a dozen, spending on a closer would mean we'd be stuck with guys like the Solano Brothers as key players.
SilverBullet
Somebody please take that pic of the Solano Brothers in batting practice and edit them with Mario and Luigi clothes including a D and a J on their caps and title it the Super Solano Brothers! Wild Card
No. Closers are a dime a dozen, spending on a closer would mean we'd be stuck with guys like the Solano Brothers as key players. While I tend to agree, Chapman ain't a dime a dozen arm. More like once in a generation.
SilverBullet
I would, but there's nothing super about them and I'm not a liar. Then do it but put "Not So" in front of Super Solano Brothers.
SongInTheAir
While u tend to agree, Chapman ain't a dime a dozen arm. More like once in a generation. Absolutely true, but only one inning at a time. Elite relief pitchers are the most overpaid players in baseball. His 2.7 WAR was awesome for a relief pitcher, but for reference, that's about the same WAR as Casey McGehee (2.0) + Adeiny Hechavarria (0.6) or Marcell Ozuna (3.7) + Reed Johnson (-0.7) + Greg Dobbs (-0.2). Erick
I wouldn't do this right now and it's really just more terrible "journalism" from Frisaro, but building a super pen could be an alternative to compensate for our mediocre staff. Still not a fan of so many dollars in the bullpen. Also, his idea of trading Cishek for assets would make no sense. Trade assets to get Chapman only to potentially turn around and trade Cishek for assets. Wtf. He (Frisaro) should've just left that part out. greenhat
Get him and try him as a starter. He is only making 5 mil this year and even with another big year will still be affordable next season. Worth a lot more than that even if he is a reliever the whole time. As a starter he is worth way more than that. Of course it depends what they would want.
Michael
Get him and try him as a starter. Congratulations, this is no longer Wild Card exclusive! Chapman has been amazing out of the bullpen, why change that? Each time the Reds have considered it, they decided, "keep him in the bullpen." And now, they're not even considering it anymore. Why? Cause amazing out of bullpen. He won't throw 102 consistently as a starter. He only has a fastball and slider, thus won't be so effective. Just ... ^^ picture. Jokersgoon
id trade for him if hes avaliable. the game is trending towards elite bullpens. it "shortens" the game.

He doesn't need to throw 102 consistently and he only needs two pitches when that fastball and slider are that good. Randy Johnson also only threw fastball and slider and early in his career he was thought to only be a reliever as well. The Reds keep him i the bullpen because Dusty Baker has the same kind of antiquated thinking that you have regarding relief pitchers. You try him as a starter. If it works out its a huge win (like C.J. Wilson for the Rangers), if it doesn't then you move him back. To not even try is dumb.
