June 8, 201511 yr The minor leagues are a cycle. Chances are, we are not going to have to wait three years before we have some nice arms in the system. So who do we trade to acquire those arms?
June 8, 201511 yr It's okay, the US is basically a theocracy anyway. Unfortunately we're not. Not sure if this was sarcasm or not.
June 8, 201511 yr Also, lots of walks and not that many strikeouts? Welcome to the Marlins Pitching Staff, Adam Conley. I don't think that is a fair assessment. For his minor league career he has a 8.26 K/9 and a 3.00 BB/9. This season it's 6.71 K/9 and a 3.5 BB/9, however he did miss most of last season with an injury and he's also only pitched 10 games in AAA. You of all people know about sample size. I think his whole body of minor league work will be more indicative of the type of pitcher he can be. He is very talented and I think he will succeed in the rotation or the bullpen.
June 8, 201511 yr OK. Once Nicolino comes up that will LITERALLY be the last of our starting pitching prospects that have any modicum of a chance in the majors within the next three years. Nicolino/Urena/Flores/Conley were literally the last of our system. Conley's probably better suited for long relief work anyway. Could likely end up being a Brad Hand for the team moving forward (a guy who can start when needed but is better suited in the 'pen). I'm amazed how lacking we are in starting pitching depth in the minors. If none of these guys pan out we are in for a rough few years of trying to fill out the 3-5 spots in the rotation after Fernandez/Alvarez. Jarlin Garcia would beg to differ with you. Maybe even Trevor Williams.

You're right, my bad. I only looked at his numbers for this year and I should have looked at his entire track record. Either way, I think he winds up as a #5 starter or a bullpen arm.
June 8, 201511 yr Trevor Williams is putting up a mid 4 ERA in Jax at 23 years old. He's a #5 at best in the future. I actually forgot Jarlin Garcia so he's fine to mention. But again he's 22 in Jupiter, which is a pitcher's haven. He's coming off a 4+ ERA in a better hitter's park in GBoro. He is very much still a work in progress. Again, none of these guys are two or three years away from being major league ready. I'd trade all seven of our #4/5 potential pitcher's for a single #3 caliber guy, something this system lacks and something we traded away in Andrew Heaney to get Dee. Haren won't be here next year, and the list of Urena/Koehler/Flores/Phelps/etc/etc/etc are in no way shape or form #3 starters next season. There is a definite problem with our minor league depth. And yes @Valid the minor leagues are cyclical, and a few hits in the draft turns a 29th ranked system into a top 10 system, but that is fine only if you truly believe in the players that currently play for the major league squad can field a competitive team within the next three years, or that we have the means to go out and sign good free agents if we don't. Given what happened with Shields this offseason, Loria has shown he won't go out and spend for the missing pitchers, and those guys listed in our system are outside shots at MAYBE being decent #4's and #5's. Luckily a lot of those pitching problems will be masked by pitching half their starts in the super pitcher friendly Marlins Park, but this team isn't going to win 90 games with the projected rotation to be fielded next year (which would be Fernandez/Alvarez/Phelps/Urena/Nicolino or Koehler. Just because we have a plethora of mediocre pitchers doesn't make any of those mediocre pitchers really good.
June 8, 201511 yr I think we should let all of these young guys pitch in the majors before we decide if they are all a bunch of mediocre pitchers with back of rotation ceilings. If I recall correctly, when Jose Fernandez was in the minors blowing people away, many on here predicted his ceiling to be that of a #3 pitcher at best. There are also some young arms in the lower minors worth keeping an eye on. Jorgan Cavanerio, Michael Mader, Chris Sadberry, and Dillon Peters all have some upside. Hopefully we will be able to add some more arms to this list tonight.

Some reports actually stated that the Marlins offered the most money, but Shields did not want to play for us and preferred San Diego for less money. I think our offer was more AAV, but fewer years. Something like that. Our offer was certainly considered fair though.
June 8, 201511 yr Gotta love how whenever a free agent chooses to sign elsewhere it's because of Loria not wanting to spend money. Sigh.
June 9, 201511 yr Conley isn't a bad arm. He's performed well lately with 5 QS in his last 7 games. He relies on the fastball a lot as his secondary stuff is average at best thought it has improved from what it used to be. His delivery makes him effective because he throws from a really low angle/arm slot. He's going to be a hit-or-miss type of guy but I think he can be decent if he is used in correctly.
June 9, 201511 yr Had he not thrown so many pitches on Friday, yesterday would have been a nice game to get him in.
June 9, 201511 yr Also, lots of walks and not that many strikeouts? Welcome to the Marlins Pitching Staff, Adam Conley. the marlins special!!! I'm back everyone. what did i miss?

June 11, 201511 yr http://marlinsminors.mlblogs.com/2015/06/10/getting-the-call-adam-conley/ I don't understand why they didn't mention that he was hurt in 2014 in AAA and that he missed a big part of the season. If I remember correctly most of his struggles were after he came back from the injury. Not that I agree or disagree with their assessment. I've never seen him pitch as I've only been able to follow his stats throughout the years. We'll see how he pans out. If he can at least rid us of Mike Dunn I will be very happy. However, I think there is more to him than just that.
