Aroldis Chapman?

Featured Replies

It's been rumored that the Marlins will pursue a closer this offseason (for some reason, that's one of the priorities), and it's also been rumored that they actually tried to acquire Aroldis Chapman in July. It's clear that, if they pursue a closer, Chapman is the guy they want this offseason since the reliever options in free agency are absolute trash. So, 1. Would you trade for Chapman?2. If yes, what would you give up to get him?Personally, I'll go with yes because whatever. I really don't care if they trade anyone from the farm system since I think they're all going to suck anyway.

culture of losing. He puts on that uniform he will go 0-4 with 15 saves and 3 DL stints. Don't forget baker will be managing.

Reds asked for Yelich and more for him.

LETS DO IT!!!! Trade for Chapman, sign Cespedes, Cuban cigar giveaway nights. Would be a great year.

We don't have a "culture of losing." We just have a terrible front office.

I feel closers are plug-and-play. There are a few dominant ones, which are great to have for multiple years but for the most part, I wouldn't overpay for one, salary or trade wise, because they are so variable and another one is just round the corner.

Basically, they are the running backs of the MLB.

It's worth noting that, if the team plans on winning next year, the starting rotation is garbage so it's going to be tough. One way to compensate for that is to build a deep bullpen. The closer isn't just about the 9th inning, it's also about moving all of the other relievers back one inning and upgrading the staff as a whole.

In terms of dollars, acquiring Chapman is probably going to cost less than upgrading the starting rotation. And you know the team isn't going to spend big dollars long-term to upgrade the rotation.

Elite closers are never elite closers for long. Trading for Chapman would be awful, using Yelich to get him would be very, very Marlins. Yelich is a million times more valuable to a team than even the best closer in baseball history (Kevin Gregg) would be.

For what it's worth, I was joking about the Yelich part. I would never trade Yelich for a closer. However, I would trade anyone in our farm system for Chapman because there's not a single player in the farm system who projects to be good anyway.

Seeing Erick excited to trade for a closer makes me question everything in life.

I've never had a problem with elite relievers. Chapman is arguably the best reliever in baseball and his success seems pretty sustainable unless if he's going to magically lose velocity over the offseason. A 100mph swing and miss fastball is always the best pitch in baseball.

Also, we all know that Loria wants a closer this offseason. He loves closer. If we're acquiring a closer, Chapman is the only guy I want. The alternatives in free agency are trash.

For what it's worth, Chapman is so elite that he's basically been worth ~2.5 WAR on average over the last four years. As a reliever. I have a problem acquiring closers simply because they have a track record for getting saves. Acquiring elite relievers is a different story. There's nothing wrong with acquiring elite players depending on the return. Value is value.

You could make a case that Chapman is more valuable than the potential SP you want to acquire in free agency. You can already eliminate the truly elite SP options in free agency. I'll take elite relievers like Chapman to upgrade my staff over #3 type starters any day.

Several teams have been building their teams around deep bullpens in recent years and have had success doing it. Just look at the Royals.

Prado just hit a walk-off as I was changing my avatar. It's a sign. Everyone's excited for the ChapMAN.

know why im excited? Cause he will be the first black marlins closer since alfonseca! *rip rip bang*

know why im excited? He probably has met todd frazier and he can share hitting tips with his new teammates! *bang zoom*

Chronic terrible front office = culture of losing

what piece of trash in the marlins system would the reds want that would make walt jocketty say, 'ok, sure we'll do that deal without yelich.'

question

In general, I like Chapman. Would I want the Marlins to trade for him? Not really. The price would be too high for a guy who could conceivably flake out from one day to the next.

It's obviously from a small sample size but today I was thinking they should let Barraclough close this last month and maybe give him a shot at closing next year. I'd rather them to do something like that instead of overpaying for a closer.

Waaaayyyyyy too many walks.

Chapman is not where our problem is. Marlins need to bid on Cespedes, give him his 20M a year. Deperately need a bat like his in this lineup. Ozuna will not reach his level. Then package Ozuna, one of Bour/Dietrich and whatever for a 2/3 starter. Then sign a FA pitcher 3/4. Then we're a playoff team.

Fair enough, Admin. Dollar and year wise their bid should be right there with the Mets, hopefully slightly better. If after all this, Cespedes signs with the Mets, so be it.
