January 21, 201610 yr Author Odds of Yoenis signing with fish down to about 5% Seriously though, anything drastically change or he just didn't care for our offer?
January 21, 201610 yr Author Fuck if he went to the Nats I'd be pretty pissed. It would definitely impact us and ugh.
January 21, 201610 yr I agree. The Nats have just become the most despicable team in baseball. A team full of assholes.
January 21, 201610 yr Let's say the Marlins were in fact able to offer something like 5/100.. Hypothetically speaking. They would just back load the contract and in year 3 if there isn't an opt out in the contract. Which I doubt he would opt out anyway, you are looking at paying the guy $23-26 million not even counting the other rising contracts on this team. Yoenis is nice, but I wouldn't go long term with him and he won't settle for anything less.
January 21, 201610 yr Author There was a point I thought he'd settle for less but suddenly it's looking like he won't have to. If he would settle I thought we had as good a shot as anybody because in that scenario we wouldn't lowball him with our offer. With that said, the other day I proposed giving him the five year deal but heavily front loading it with an opt out after both years one and two in hopes that he gets his payday and opts out and then we'd only have had him his two best years. But after days of that thought, now I'd rather stick with Ozuna who can give you possibly better production especially over the span of the next several seasons, and obviously without the financial commitments.
January 21, 201610 yr At this point though the problem is the marlins haven't made substantial improvements to put us up there with the nats and mets. Unless some in the team believe that having our key guys healthier than last year is enough.
January 21, 201610 yr It is is going to start and end with our pitching for us to even match up within the division. Fernandez and Chen are a nice punch but what the heck happens in game 3? Cosart vs Gonzalez or Koehler vs Thor? REALLY!!?
January 21, 201610 yr What makes anyone think Cespedes will regress offensively? He's seen MLB pitching for 2 years & has crushed it
January 21, 201610 yr Seriously though, anything drastically change or he just didn't care for our offer? Wasn't enough
January 21, 201610 yr What makes anyone think Cespedes will regress offensively? He's seen MLB pitching for 2 years & has crushed it Maybe because he OPSed .870 last year while OPSing .737 and .751 in the two years prior?
January 21, 201610 yr Odds of Yoenis signing with fish down to about 5% that he'll say No to a long term?
January 21, 201610 yr Don't read into the nats hype. Those egos in there could cause problems amongst the clubhouse. Harper scherzer Murphy . Good? Yes. But too many issues could stem.
January 22, 201610 yr Maybe because he OPSed .870 last year while OPSing .737 and .751 in the two years prior? He also OPSecd .860 in 2012. Defensively he might be a liability but I see him as a force at the plate. At least for the next couple years
January 22, 201610 yr Exactly just the next couple of years, what happens to the remaining years of mediocre play? We are stuck on the hook with a $22 - $25 million dollar contract per year. Because you can bet that the Marlins would only pay him around $16-18 MAX for 2016 and the rest of the years of that contract would be back loaded. Ozuna can put up some good production for much much less than that. No thanks, give me a pitcher that can match up well decently against our division rivals and then we got something here.
January 22, 201610 yr I wonder if they've discussed Dexter Fowler. Cheaper than Cespedes and he has a relationship with Bonds. Personally, I'd just keep Ozuna and sign another starter...but if you can get a good pitcher for Ozuna, I'd at least consider it.

January 22, 201610 yr Author The "get a good pitcher for Ozuna" boat just seems to have sailed away. At this point moving Ozuna means we'd get a weaker pitching return plus a weaker replacement in the outfield so on both counts I'd stay away from it. I'm also getting more excited about Ozuna having a bounceback year, it's "almost" a given that he'll have a better year than whatever the hell 2015 was for him.
January 22, 201610 yr Nothing on Fowler and I agree with everything you said I'm perfectly happy sticking with Ozuna. In fact I'd prefer it to committing big money to (either) 30 year old free agent OF. Put whatever resources are left towards improving the pitching staff.
January 22, 201610 yr If the team was interested in winning now they would make a play for gallardo. It seems the Rockies are the frontrunner. Signing him would improve the team more than really signing any other available free agent right now

Signing him would improve the team more than really signing any other available free agent right now I agree. It's also sad that the Rockies would be ahead of us in a play for SP. If there's any team I'd hate to be a fan of it's them. Pitchers hate going there, if they're really in the lead for him we could probably offer even less than them and he'd rather come here. The ballpark, the team, the chance of being a contender. Marlins > Rockies by far for any pitcher.

The odds of us keeping him through the life of the contract is around 10% anyway. Unload him on an AL team at a trade deadline in a few years
