Can the Marlins find a way to pay Jose?

Featured Replies

Responding to a fan on Twitter who said Jose Fernandez would never sign here because the Marlins can't afford him, Frisaro said something like... in a year or so with a new TV deal and ballpark naming rights it's possible the team comes up a financial plan to fit Jose in. He reminded us how no one thought Stanton would sign here and the Marlins found a way to give him a massive deal.

This is comparable to how Arizona just found a way to sign Greinke to that enormous deal, which has been said time again came from their FO coming up with a creative idea that would fit them financially as opposed to just giving him all that money straightforward without considering the consequences.

Anyone care to agree or disagree with Joe on this one on the idea that the Marlins could still find a way to pay Jose?

It was just a thought but I think it's an interesting discussion.

of course they could find a way.

FWIW I thought the FO made an extremely fair and reasonable offer to Jose before the 2015 season and that it was really quite the risk on Jose/Boras part not to take it

By the time we need to sign Jose, we'll have a new ownership

Highly doubt that. Jose received a very good offer from the Marlins and turned it down for whatever reason. At the end of the day I would just hate having to deal with Boras.

Boras doesn't want his clients giving up their free agent years in early extensions

Answering my own question, I think its very possible they can find a creative way to pay him but the toughest part is, the time to extend him is gonna fall in a real tight space timewise assuming Loria sells. If we assume Loria sells in 2018, that's exactly when Jose will need to be paid, if not earlier. Not to mention that if the team does decide trading him for a massive haul is the best way to go, it's probably next offseason that's the most ideal time to do it. So again between his arbitration years, his free agency, his potential trade return, Loria possibly selling, and the ASG itself, it's gonna be hard to find the opportunity to get the deal done even if it is financially feasible.

what was the good offer he received btw? I see nothing online other than Samson saying it was a large amount of money (which means it could have literally been any amount of money)... oh, and Boras saying this:

“With TV rights and the general fund contribution and everything — every club, before they sell a ticket, they’re making $120 million. There’s a lot of revenue in this game to pay a lot of players and keep players at home.”

The offer was discussed last year on the forums. Wish I could find the thread. Wasn't it like a 4-6 year deal with 2 club options?

Something like that. It was a really fair deal but Boras clients just don't do it even with that risk of coming back from TJS.

Extremely fair deal. If he has a great season then Boras is yet again a genius. Just like Hech gambled in 2015 on having a good year and did just that, if he falls back then he is an idiot as well for not taking the contract from the Marlins.

I didn't see any confirmed numbers in an offer to Jose.

If Jose goes off in 2015, it's going to be a ludicrous contract.

Yeah I don't think there was ever a number released publicly for it but it was a fair offer

He isn't going to sign unless they pay him roughly what he'd get as a FA for those FA years and that means taking on all the risk with none of the reward of an early extension

So basically we're past signing him to a fair but team friendly extension (like Yelich signed) and at this point if we do find a way to extend him it'd basically be us paying him as if he was a big free agent signing. So it's not out of the question but it's not as financially beneficial to the team as it would have been last year or even this year.

He was not going to take a deal like Yelich took because of Boras

With the power of Google I found it. Although this was just an estimated figure

The Marlins have offered pitcher Jose Fernandez a six-year contract extension, CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman reports.

The deal is "said to be worth close to $40 million" and reportedly includes team options for a seventh and eighth year.

So it was a 6 year deal with options for 7th and 8th year. Now looking at the offer again, looks low if you ask me. 6- year 55+ would have been a better start.

he's going to be making more than $7m/year in arbitration in a couple of years (Andrew Cashner had a 4.34 ERA last year and is projected to make $7m in arbitration in '16), let alone those next couple of years after he hits FA where he'll be making way more than that.

I don't blame him one iota for not taking that 'tremendous' deal

I'd turn down that crap if I was Jose too. $40? Give me a break. That's not acceptable for Jose, a generational talent who would set free agency records. If that offer is true, the front office has absolutely no imagination and are mindless zombies just using the Kluber deal as a comp.

As for Jose, he's probably going to make $25-30 in arbitration the next 3 seasons. Nothing he can do about that. Free agency years are clearly worth over $30+ at this point with Greinke and Price setting the market. Realistically, Jose could make $120 over the next 6 years via arbitration and hypothetical FA years. Marlins signing Jose for anything less than that is a win on a year-year basis.

Guaranteed money is obnoxiously low on current ace buy outs ($35-40 million based on Bumgarner, Sale, and Kluber), with club options getting to the $65 million range. Marlins would seriously need to bump the guaranteed money to start the dialogue with the new Price and Greinke deals.

Assuming the Marlins would want a third free agency year (Kluber only gave 2), I think a break down could be something like these two examples. One is a double option-Marlins beneficial version, the other a more Jose beneficial version with more guaranteed bucks.

Marlins beneficial

16 - $4

17 - $8

18 - $13

19 - $25

20 - $27 club option / $5 buyout

21 - $28 Club option / $3 buyout

Guaranteed 4/$55, total possible value 6/$105

Fernandez beneficial

16 - $4

17 - $8

18 - $13

19 - $25

20 - $27

21 - $28 Club option / $3 buyout

That is a guaranteed 5/$80, total possible value 6/$105.

Blows Kluber deal out of the water either way with much more guaranteed money (which has to be done to account for that 3rd free agency year, Boras, and Fernandez being the golden child). I think this would be enough for Fernandez to sign, as he would be getting a really nice record setting chunk of guaranteed money, real upside with a 6 digit deal with the options, and be a free agent at 30 to get the opportunity for a "Price" level contract. Likewise, he has had an arm surgery obviously, so this mitigates his risk of a second potential injury. He's a year away from a bigger arb2 payday, so the Marlins do have some leverage right now if they are willing to guarantee a real chunk. Like I said, anything less than $120 is a win for 6 years.

Considering its Boras, I think I would split the difference between these conceptual ideas (I acknowledge the Fernandez beneficial one is way high) and try and offer him a deal guaranteeing around $65, and work out the final annual value/options to something in the $95-100 ballpark for the 6 years.

It's worth it. He's special enough to do it. He is a player that wins playoff series by himself. There is plenty of money not on the books to risk it. No one faults the organization if Fernandez gets hurt. They have to take a chance on a player who can be the top 1 SP in baseball when healthy. They fucked up Cabrera by not signing him early, they need to double down on the 5 years they still have Stanton and lock Jose up.

There is no doubt in my mind a 5/$65ish guarantee with a 6th year team option to bring value to around $100 total will get signed. Fernandez and Broas won't pass up those kinds of bucks, and the Marlins do save in that scenario by not having to shell out a $200 million deal, and get some savings on FA year prices.

So if that CBS article is accurate, I reject anyone thinking the Marlins gave a fair offer. $40 isn't close. I agree - $55 guaranteed is a great place to start, and no problems moving that into the low-mid 60s to get it locked into place.

Act like a MLB franchise. Stop the clown show.

I've been saying this for years.

I just started at a much lower number because well, it was much lower 5 years ago.

The facade of the Marlins being broke is just that.

I dont want to be that guy..but brad hand is still on the team. When is this fuck stick going to get released already?

I do find it laughable that we're still talking about these stadium naming rights and how they will be sold any day now.
