Your off-season shopping spree

Featured Replies

Coworker today asked me if I think the Marlins could be any good next year. I said maybe but it's gonna be hard and even harder considering the player we lost in Jose. The guy tells me "Can't they just get another player like him?"

...the casual fan sees every beautiful thing the media displayed the week after his death but they may never truly understand the player Jose Fernandez was and what he could have become.

The Marlins can't find a hitter in FA as good as Fernandez was...

They need something more than shopping spree. Something more than money can buy. Something or someone that gives. Someone that gives a lot. I can't quite tell what that person gives. But I am hearing soft calls that you just have to accept what they give. It sounds like they are giving... giving... love, but I am not sure who it is.

I have no idea what you said here, but I'm going to accept that it's all wrong.

The Marlins need to draft better. They need to hold onto the prospects that have promise rather than trading them for bad veterans. They need to make smarter choices in free agency and possibly even take more than just 1 "chance free agent" an offseason.

If the Cubs had Jose Fernandez instead of, say, Kyle Hendricks this season they still would've made the playoffs. Multiple teams have built stability where the loss of a single player can be overcome.

The Marlins did not successfully build around Stanton and Fernandez. While the loss of Fernandez would suck regardless, the poor front office management for at least the last three years makes it even worse.

Jeffery Loria walks into a front office meeting...

"Guys, I know we've spent a ton in free agency and the draft the last few years. I know we've traded for veterans and replaced a ton of coaches. There's just something that's missing, and I can't figure it out..."

Everybody looks around the room, contemplating just that thing that the Marlins need.

As David Samson continues to think about that time he finished last in Survivor, Michael Hill comes to a sudden realization. He gets up out of his chair and walks over to the whiteboard. Hill draws something on the board as everybody looks to see what it is. A perfectly shaped heart is visible, colored in that horrible green color at Marlins Stadium.

"It's love. Love is what's missing."

Loria stands up from his throne and begins to slow clap. The entire office is now applauding as Hill smiles, knowing that he has solved the mystery that has plagued this franchise for thirteen years.

The Marlins go 162-0 and win 40 straight World Series with Jeffery Loria as owner, celebrating his final win at the age of 115.

Jesus. They need divine help. It is a weak joke I understand. But I saw some other weak jokes so I figured what the heck.

You should be nicer to @Admin he does run the place after all

Thank you for the heads up. I did not mean malicious intent to bash @Admin.

But I appreciate implying that the weak jokes were from Admin, using my quote to indirectly bash Admin yourself.

Clever little scoundrel you!

Why not?

Because I am a patriot and I do not want to be banned from this great new forum I have located to in search of happiness.

If you slowly increase the frequency and voracity with which you make fun of Admin, the more everyone around here will like you. It's because none of us can stand @Admin, and we constantly discuss why he runs this place only to get shit on repeatedly. I'm pretty sure there is a medical term for his condition. Oh yeah, it's bitch.

Source: Qualifying offer this off-season will be $17.2M. System expected to remain in place in new CBA, with possible adjustments.

I think lots of teams would hesitate to offer the QO. It's too high for just one year salary.

ehh waht's $17.2m these days? 2.4 WAR or so? plenty of teams will make it

For the first time last year you actually had players accepting the QO, most of whom were smart to do so (look at Colby Rasmus' awful production). I was a bit more surprised someone like Matt Wieters took the QO when there's probably some team that would have thrown multiple years at a decent FA catcher. I mean Loria absolutely loves those.

I would argue that Rasmus was dumb to take it. He likely would have gotten more guaranteed money last off-season as a FA even if AAV was lower. Now he's looking at a lower salary than he would have gotten I would think.

Dim, when was the last time you had your medications adjusted?

Signing Tim Lincecum as a career reclamation project really seems to be a Loria-type thing to do. I would be willing to bet we at least try to sign him.

I wouldn't necessarily be against it as it would be pretty low risk and Lincecum would probably come cheap. He's still got a few years left in him too if he can stay healthy.

On a minor league deal, sure.

I think Lincecum might make a pretty good hitting coach replacement for Bonds. Do you really think he would ever call Giancarlo out??? That's all that matters for a hitting coach, right?

The better question is, would he choke Dietrich for not picking up baseballs?
