October 30, 20169 yr The Marlins already employ perhaps the best offensive outfield in baseball with Giancarlo Stanton, Christian Yelich and Marcell Ozuna, so they seem an unlikely suitor for the Cuban slugger. The death of Jose Fernandez last month, however, has the Marlins reeling. Cespedes, whose offseason home on a ranch in Florida is a couple of hours from Miami, would be some protection for Stanton and Yelich and as a Cuban defector, he would appeal to the community that Fernandez reached. The Marlins have shopped Ozuna around in the past and could easily make room for Cespedes. The Marlins may come out of nowhere to join the race. http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/mets/mets-challengers-yoenis-cespedes-sweepstakes-article-1.2847941
October 30, 20169 yr Cool. Simple. Makes sense. Though I wouldn't say the Marlins would be coming out of nowhere with this. They've been eyeing him for years and Loria is definitely the type of owner who likes making splashes. The Marlins are as likely of a suitor as anyone else.
October 30, 20169 yr Author I believe the Marlins have the second best chance of signing him only trailing the Mets.
October 30, 20169 yr Cespedes is going to get $100-120 million depending on whether it's a 4 or 5 year deal. Brandon Moss, Josh Reddick, and Dexter Fowler are more reasonable options under the assumption that the team trades Ozuna to acquire pitching.
October 30, 20169 yr Financially the Mets have to be ahead of us but...and this is nothing but a guess on my part, wouldn't shock me if Cespedes really does want to play here.
October 30, 20169 yr Yes! Yelich in CF!! Cespedes in left. Ozuna is better than the other options anyway so why downgrade? Fowler? Another singles hitter?? We have pitching, we don't have starting pitching. Sign Chapman as well and do a 10-12 man bullpen rotation that pitches 30-40 pitches every 3 games. No starters.

Mattingly is not a good enough in-game manager to make something like that work.
October 30, 20169 yr Trade Stanton...Ozuna to RF I didn't know you could trade a player to a position.
October 30, 20169 yr I believe the Marlins have the second best chance of signing him only because I secretly love the Mets.
October 30, 20169 yr This is the move we need to make. Not because Cespedes is necessarily a better option than Ozuna, but because it's the only we way get starting pitching. We're essentially buying a starting pitcher by buying Cespedes.
October 30, 20169 yr Author Don't concern yourselves with the money here. All signs point to loria spending this winter
October 30, 20169 yr It's amazing how many people forget that despite our persistent payroll limitations when Loria wants to spend he sure as hell spends, for better or worse.
October 30, 20169 yr Don't concern yourselves with the money here. All signs point to loria spending this winter How much? Is he looking to go all out?
October 30, 20169 yr Don't concern yourselves with the money here. All signs point to loria spending this winter Of course he's gonna spend this winter. He lives in New York, he's gonna need new sweaters jackets scarves maybe even ear muffs.
October 30, 20169 yr Author I'd prefer Fowler if he doesn't accept the mutual option, but that's just me. There's an option where only one side can want him and he ends up there? I don't know man, could get awkward

October 30, 20169 yr Author Don't concern yourselves with the money here. All signs point to loria spending this winter That's usually not a good thing if previous seasons are any indication.
October 30, 20169 yr Mattingly is not a good enough in-game manager to make something like that work. It would take a flexible and cautious manager experimenting with it in some minor league team for a year or 2 to analyze it and work the kinks out and encounter all the idiosyncrasies/troubles that come with it. Then if successful, the program can get referred to MLB manager or that manager can get promoted to something like pitching coach.
October 31, 20169 yr Loria is gonna overpay for either Hill or Hellickson. the rotation is currently the bottom 5 in mlb and arguably the absolute worst. he really has no choice but to overpay for both, really
October 31, 20169 yr the rotation is currently the bottom 5 in mlb and arguably the absolute worst. he really has no choice but to overpay for both, really I'm scared of the overpay + loosing draft picks I'm sure both will have Qualifying Offers. I don't mind for Hellickson but Hill Yikes! Not Michael(Hill) he's a double Yikes!
