March 20, 20197 yr That's a problem. The realest fans would be impossible to know about, think about it. Apparently there was a thread on an internet blog where all the real Marlins fans showed up. Haven't seen them since though now that I think about it.

Incredible because I have it on good authority that there are no baseball fans in Florida. So says national media and twitter people
March 20, 20197 yr Didn’t they just spend a bunch of money removing all the color from the concourse. Or is that the joke? Sorry sometimes I can’t tell around here I was just thinking out loud, but thinking about a vinyl wrap with the names printed- use the colors for certain accolades. I'm sure with all of our historic colors- Teal, Orange, Silver, Black, Red-Orange, Ocean Blue, Sunshine Yellow, Night Club Black, Energy Silver, Caliente Red, Marlin Blue, Midnight Black, Slate Grey. Kinda like how they did the Jose Tribute on the plaza at first- that everyone signed.

March 20, 20197 yr Have you looked in Tampa? They don't like to travel to St. Pete. In my opinion baseball fans exist everywhere in this country. Every market has a specific set of challenges to overcome. Hillsborough and Pinellas counties have plenty of baseball fans. Taking shots at other markets for sport is irritating whether the marlins are the target or some other team.

March 20, 20197 yr I’m totally serious. TB is a misunderstood market. Not that it matters on a marlins board.
March 20, 20197 yr I’m totally serious. TB is a misunderstood market. Not that it matters on a marlins board. TB gets a (generally) worse rap than us for attendance because they essentially have never shown up even when the team has been good and the team has been very competitive for many seasons. The Marlins can at least say they've sucked so the fans have had no real reason to really come out and even then Marlins fans have shown slight spikes in attendance when there seems to be a reason for it (the opening of the new ballpark and during both playoff runs)... anyone know how good Marlins attendance was in 04 and 05 because those years would be a great gauge for this.

Here you go.....got figures from baseballreference (couldn't find them on MLB ironically....actually I just remembered where I'd find them). I gave a little more info than you asked for, but figured while I was at it, may as well do it all. Red designates high water marks for Florida and Miami. Unsurprisingly, it's the first year of both. Blue are championship years. And bolded/black are '04/'05 you asked about. I always will wonder if things would have been different without the strike in their second year of existence. Killed any momentum they had. They were on pace for rougly 2.67M in 1994. A drop, sure, but still a great number. 1995-6's numbers were lower than the shortened 1994.
March 21, 20197 yr Author They had momentum really building 2003-2005, that was a killer. It's also really interesting to notice how leaguewide attendance must've really jumped over the years. 1.7M was good for 15 in '95, but in '04, it was 26th.
March 21, 20197 yr I pretty much don't count inaugural seasons for this. Those are automatically gonna be huge attendance years regardless of team quality. When the new and cool factor wears off and the team stinks for a few years before hopefully rising back up... that's a better test for how well a city supports their team.
March 21, 20197 yr So in the 3 seasons where the Marlins were expected to be good (04, 05, 12) attendance did go up. So if you give Miami/South Florida a team they really feel will be good, the people will show up. This doesn't defend how the people abandon the team when they're not expected to be good but it does show that with (assumed) success there are fans that will show up. Briefly looking at the same for the Rays over the last decade when they've been pretty close to contenders their attendance has still stunk, hovering around 13th-15th out of 15 in AL attendance. Their highest point (excluding '98) was 7th best I believe in 2010. So, like I thought, Rays fans don't show up even if they're good. Marlins fans at least come out when the team is supposed to be good, admittedly that is rare as it is.
March 21, 20197 yr Holy crap why was attendance so bad in 2002? Only guessing but probably far enough away from the 97 team that people gave up on them by 02. Like in 98 and 99 even with the team being bad you had enough people who were still fans after the 97 world series that stuck around. By 02 the casual fans were just gone. I myself was pretty out of it from 99-02, into 03 really. Just a really low time for the fanbase.
March 21, 20197 yr How was MLB attendance overall in 2002? Down https://www.baseball-reference.com/leagues/MLB/misc.shtml
March 21, 20197 yr Down https://www.baseball-reference.com/leagues/MLB/misc.shtml And down again in 2003 before going up in 2004. I wonder why.
March 21, 20197 yr And down again in 2003 before going up in 2004. I wonder why. Some speculation in here. Also some hilarious Samson crap too https://www.nytimes.com/2002/10/01/sports/baseball-biggest-drop-for-attendance-in-major-leagues-since-the-1995-season.html
March 21, 20197 yr 2002 is the first year of Loria ownership. Maybe the fans were really into John Henry's ownership and thought the 2001 team was just two pitchers away and boycotted the 02 team in protest?
