So would I but there isn't one of those in the free agent market. I'd prefer this to trading prospects for one.

Mish also said it's for a trade, hope they make a good deal this time.

Yeah it has to be by trade, cause they refused to think about signing a reliever until all the options were gone.

"We'll hoard all prospects instead of trading for Reynolds"

Also....

"Well, looks like we have to trade prospects for a bp arm because Holloway can only be a starter even though he sux at that and we don't want our farm ranking to drop by promoting  prospects from it"

---- just so much stupidity this off-season. It's really astounding how poorly executed it was. Almost like they want the Marlins to fail to force another rebuild as the starters get more expensive.

I wouldn’t say the offseason has been terrible, just not perfect.

Meyer should actually be a starter.

Elieser in the bullpen.

I've been saying it for a while but ive always thought Elieser would make s fantastic closer

At this point I'd give them a D+ for their offseason signings?  Most of that is for getting an actual Catcher.  I still think the Garcia signing was an utter waste of money and should have been allocated towards getting one of the top relievers available.  Soler signing is decent for the price (had they not already signed Garcia).  Wendle is a good acquisition but is a depth signing and will not elevate this team to compete with any of the big 3 ahead of them.  The other problem is that they seem to be hellbent on having an entire lineup constructed of big power swing and miss guys - not the Adam Dunn type either that can still get on base via walk.  This is why last year you'd see 4-5 games in a row with only 1-2 runs scored and then they'd push 12 runs across in a game because the power would show up and things would align.

They just needed some impact guys signed but instead opted for depth signings only.  They failed on all accounts to acquire any impact bats or top relievers whether it was via trade or FA signing.  It was just a piss poor offseason overall that did absolutely nothing to make them relevant in the NL East.  I strongly doubt they'll even be at .500 by seasons end with their current roster.  I see maybe 75 wins and another season filled with tons of 3-2 or 3-1 losses punctuated again by the occasional 12 run outburst night.

You could be right about the record, but I think the players are better than you’re saying.

For one, you’re saying we need more Adam Dunn type hitters when Soler can be exactly that. He’s always been known for a high walk rate to go along with his power, and he cut his strikeout rate last year actually. I would’ve preferred an actual CF’er, but he should definitely help the offense.

Avisail Garcia has had an inconsistent career, but, if he can continue to do what he did last year, that’d definitely be very nice. For what it’s worth, Statcast loves him and is a reason why the market price was what it was for him.

We desperately needed a catcher and got, arguably, the best defensive catcher in baseball who isn’t exactly an embarrassment on offense. It’s a dramatic upgrade over Alfaro, and it might make our pitching even better than it what it was before. Luzardo already looks like a much better pitcher so far in Spring Training, not sure if the C has anything to do with that. Again though, that doesn’t hurt.

Joey Wendle should be way more important than you’re saying. For one, he can play all over. Even though he’s technically not a starter on the team, I wouldn’t doubt he ends up starting 100+ games this year. That’s without even taking injuries into account which we know will happen at some point. This is another big time upgrade over…uh, Joe Panik? When was the last time we had a legit bench player? It’s been a problem for years. Loria/Hill never cared for the bench, and it’s been mostly a disaster in recent years too so I’m looking forward to having some depth. All good teams have depth.

I would probably give the offseason a B, not a D. Oh yeah, they gave Sandy a 5-year contract extension. That’s something that’s never happened in the history of the franchise.

It’s not an A obviously because it’d be nice to have the CF’er & I thought they needed another bullpen arm even before Floro getting injured.

MLB.com has us as the most improved team this year in terms of projected increased wins so it’s tough to call it a D offseason.

I think Kim Ng is making good moves, just hoping she makes more moves. It’s also clear that she/the front office feel the same way we feel about the team needs, but they’re just not comfortable with the asking price. The “who cares what we give up, just go get Bryan Reynolds” thing is stuff that fans can say, but the front office is not necessarily supposed to think that way.

I’m guessing they’re hoping to see how things go at this point, and solve some of the issues in July if they’re still in contention, which is the situation a lot of teams are in heading into the season. It should be easier to make a trade in July if necessary when half the teams realize they have no shot of making the playoffs.

I'll just ask though, with the moves they made (versus what they needed to do) - how does it get them past the Braves, Mets, or Phillies? It doesn't! - barring some really lucky breaks here and there.  They signed depth players, not impact players.

Breaks, you say?

That really all depends on your definition of an impact player.

Soler, while not consistent, has definitely been an impact player in the past. Garcia was an impact player last year. Wendle’s a depth guy but was impactful enough to make the All-Star team last year…representing the Rays who mostly put “depth players” on the field and win every year.

Stallings defense is more than depth, teams pay good money for it when catchers like him reach free agency.

So again, it all depends how you look at it. If we get the good version of these players, they will definitely have an impact.

Yeah I'm not sure any of them would be "impact players" but I feel like altogether they can help the Marlins "make an impact."

The club does feel improved to me.

Not positive that it's enough but I do feel they've improved.

End of day its a results based business.

Marlins were a 4th place team when the offseason started.

They are still a 4th place team as we sit here today.

So for all they did, their inability to actually spend money will hamstring them and enable them to not be anything more than a 4th place team.

Oh i agree they've improved but it's just not anywhere close to the level they should have improved with the ridiculous amount of financial flexibility and room they should have to spend and trade.  Not really much point in improving at all if you're happy to just stay in 4th.

If they finish better than 4th, can you leave the message board?

In terms of spending, there was no CF’er to spend on in free agency. The only way to acquire a legit CF’er is via trade.

As for relievers, it’s generally a bad investment to spend on them. Remember when we were excited about Heath Bell?

Not to defend the front office but the two areas of need to be acquired via trade. I’m not sure what the asking price has been, but sometimes the trades we want to make now are the same ones we end up saying we regret later.

Furthermore, at least in the case of the reliever, usually one reliever doesn’t turn a 4th place team (which Das is guaranteeing already) into a playoff team (at least analytically speaking), so there’s that.
