Ah April, the knee-jerk over reactions to SSS. Spring is here.

Garcia's BABIP is 80 points lower than his career rate (which would effectively move him to .260 which is what he did last year), last year he started slow in April (.609 OPS), he has a history of terrible months here and there (.594 OPS June 2019 in particular), and he's being evaluated on 59 PA. The BB/K rates are *very* concerning, I have no explanation for that. But it's also a SSS so we'll see what happens. He has either forgotten how to play baseball with the BB/K rate, or he's had a slow start. It seems to me he may be stressing to do something and needs to chill.

For those complaining they will get killed on the deal, the defense metrics are good so he will always have a floor. He is a career .824 OPS hitter vs LHP also. If nothing more, he's a moderately expensive 400+ PA platoon player who is a must start on all lefties and doesn't kill you against righties with the defense. That won't kill them like the Chen deal (deferred forever) even if not ideal for the 4 year commitment. Practically, he's likely to regress to his 3 year mean, which is around a .775 OPS, with excellent defense, and better against lefties. That's a good starter. If you believe in statcast hard hit/etc. data, he has untapped power potential on top of that which is certainly what the Marlins are looking at when they offered that deal. I'm not sure about that, but we'll see how many "30" HR years are coming. 

If ya'll want to sit him a game or two against right handers and get Anderson/DLC in the OF and clear his head go for it. He may need it. But past that just wait for the regression. He's going to probably be fine. So is Soler (45 points low on BABIP).

Maybe something happened to him, but the law of averages is undefeated. 

 

*The worst two defensive players on the team are Soler and J. Sanchez. It is a small SSS, but we pretty much know it isn't going to get better. They should do this ASAP:

CF - Ramon Laureano or some other CF most RHP, all LHP, Sanchez gets the rest of RHP for off days
LF - Jesus Sanchez most RHP (and remainder in CF), most LHP, Soler some games against LHP when Sanchez needs an off day, spots days for Anderson/others after that
DH - Soler most LHP (remainder in LF), most RHP, Cooper/Aguilar get remainder of time when Soler in LF or off day
1B - Aguilar most RHP, Cooper the rest of RHP and all LHP

This is what we should be bitching about. Fix the defense in CF/LF, have redundancy in case a CF gets hurt, get someone who hits lefties harder as they really need it, and this gives them depth to play matchups and have one of those 5 guys on the bench. Everyone is getting 500+ PA so there isn't a playing time problem. To mention, Garcia would be all LHP, most RHP, and spot days for Anderson/others so he doesn't get impacted by the CF trickle down as Soler, Aguilar, and Cooper would. Let's create good playing time problems. How hasn't this still not happened yet?

I'm not a fan of or believer in defensive metrics.  Jesus Sanchez has played very well in CF.  With the exception of 2 balls (1 in SF and 1 recently) that were off or near the fence, I haven't seen him miss a ball, take a bad angle or costs us runs out there. I see a very fundamentally sound CF making all the necessary plays out there.

Even Soler has been decent in LF.  I can't recall being upset at Soler with bad play in the OF.  Now, I get that he is slow and his range isn't great and that might be what's costing him with the analytics, but that's not the case with Jesus.

That's just one old man's observations.  Maybe I'm naive, but I'm good with Jesus in CF.

I honestly think that he was pretty consistent the first 7 innings. The zone did tighten up in the last 2 or 3 innings though. The Nats just took advantage of that location so it obviously favored them. Marlins did not throw it there as much.

His launch angle is also below his career average which was lower than the league average to begin with. This has led to a slight uptick in GB% which was already higher than average. Part of the reason could be that he is seeing more sliders and sinkers than ever before. Is it because we have seen too many sinker-slider guys or do we think that the league is trying something different with him?

Just looked at the numbers for a few of the other guys. Seems like everyone is seeing more sinkers. Only a couple of guys are seeing more sliders so that might be strategy.
