I'm not a fan of or believer in defensive metrics.  Jesus Sanchez has played very well in CF.  With the exception of 2 balls (1 in SF and 1 recently) that were off or near the fence, I haven't seen him miss a ball, take a bad angle or costs us runs out there. I see a very fundamentally sound CF making all the necessary plays out there.

Even Soler has been decent in LF.  I can't recall being upset at Soler with bad play in the OF.  Now, I get that he is slow and his range isn't great and that might be what's costing him with the analytics, but that's not the case with Jesus.

That's just one old man's observations.  Maybe I'm naive, but I'm good with Jesus in CF.

It's that. It's the plays that aren't made are what impact things. Jeter was a bad defender for his career. Other SS would get to more "routine balls" than him regularly. But, Jeter would get lucky sometimes, get to one, and make one of those vintage across the body jumping throws which "looks" the part of a good defensive play..... but is not because most other SS make it "look boring" as they get better jumps and cover more ground. Jeter let many go by him without trying where other dudes like Alex Gonzalex and Miguel Rojas get to those balls and make outs.

Here, the balls dropping for hits that shouldn't, or the 1B turning into a 2B, the 2B turning into a 3B, the runner going first to third when he should be at second, are the ones that impact things. I feel this is happening here. These guys are below average defenders. Frankly, Soler is a very very bad defender. He should be permanent DH with few spots in the OF just to give Sanchez off days versus a tougher lefty. They are losing a game or more with him in LF versus an above average upgrade and they cannot afford that game.

Sanchez definitely has potential... which goes back to he'd probably be average or better in LF as he gets good jumps. An above average defensive CF (Laureano) turns them into one of the best defensive outfields in baseball overnight as Garcia is very good, versus the below average group they are today with two bad spots. Likewise, Sanchez is proving he can handle it "enough" to not create a void of production if the other CF gets hurt.

This is why they wanted a CF this offseason. They didn't get one, presumably as they refuse to trade Watson/Eury/Meyer/Cabrera. They are in the backup plan mode now, and while Sanchez may be "good enough" as a stop gap, I'm going to hold them to the fire until they resolve this issue. It's a huge team-wide upgrade to get a legit CF short and long term. It's worth three or four of their top 3/5-12 prospects to get it done depending on the name.

For Avi, he's hitting the ball as hard as his career averages, but his K% and BB% are currently career lows. His launch angle is also below his career average which was lower than the league average to begin with. This has led to a slight uptick in GB% which was already higher than average. Part of the reason could be that he is seeing more sliders and sinkers than ever before. Is it because we have seen too many sinker-slider guys or do we think that the league is trying something different with him?

Yes, great observation. It's probably both also. Teams are getting much smarter about pitch selection and having their best arms pump their best pitches, and knowing pitch type weaknesses for everyone. We are in extended bullpen hell remember too - everyone is throwing bullets with extra bodies ready so teams can do this even more aggressively right now with lesser concerns of innings/bullpen wear.  The BB/K and BABIP will level and he'll be fine. This may just be a small adjustment and/or sample size luck. I'll be worried around 250 PA.

Marlins must be doing good, haven't seen any over the top @taiwanmarlin posts lately.

They're good now but still need to acquire Laureano to play the CF, is it “over the top” ?

No, it's up the middle, like shortstop, second base, and catcher.

What about Reynolds? Is out of the picture? Also, he has been slumping lately.

I think the trade idea with Reynolds is - he REALLY hits the balls so it's much easier to overlook "reasonably below average defense" if you're an .875+ OPS hitter and immune to platoon splits. I think Reynolds/Sanchez could man CF for 2 years (with LF then being good defense unlike now), before someone gets kicked to DH and a longterm CF is brought in as that will likely still be a need.

Reynolds is a SSS right now - he has a .244 BABIP, career .342. Considering he is batting .194 at the moment..... he's going to be hitting .290+ very shortly. I think the Marlins could get him tomorrow, but it's going to cost Watson/Meyer, Eury/Cabrera, Bleday/Burdick, and some other guy 15-20 in the system. Is the juice of those 4 guys worth the squeeze? I think most here would say no (I probably would). I think exploring Laureano makes the most sense as he can also be impactful at lesser prospects.

Also, I still think they can get Brandon Marsh. Trout, Ward, and Adell seems pretty legitimate, so if the Marlins trade them say.... Meyer, Cooper, and some RP they can use right now for him (Cooper helps them 1B/OF, as he could pop out and so could Walsh)... the Marlins can then scrounge around for another right handed bat to replace Cooper for this year which won't cost much. Plus, Burdick looks like the 2nd best hitting prospect they have at the moment and could immediately be a replacement.

Just saying. Laureano makes the most sense, but Meyer's stock is going up so maybe Marsh is still in play. They can figure out their own OF as they still need pitching.

Just looked at the numbers for a few of the other guys. Seems like everyone is seeing more sinkers. Only a couple of guys are seeing more sliders so that might be strategy.

On today‘s telecast, they talked about how the league as a whole has been throwing more offspeed pitches so far.

Could our horrible outfield shifts be having a negative affect on our outfielders metrics? Do these metrics take where a defender is positioned or shifted to into account?

Correa has almost been as bad as Avisail. He has been worse than Aggy and Soler. I know that no one expects that Correa will suck all year, but does anyone really expect Garcia to OPS .490?

No, I don't expect either to be as bad as they've been over the course of the full season.  But you could've dropped Correa's abilities onto the roster on top of what they have, and had even more potential.
