Defending Don Mattingly...

Is this actually a rule?

I checked and yes rule 1.01 says the teams need to be under the direction of a manager, thought didn't see anything about what would happen without one.

But looking this up I did see where it said that you only need one umpire to play the game.

I bet that one ump would stand behind the pitcher and call balls and strikes from there.

Anyone who thinks Don Mattingly is a good manager who deserves to keep managing this team: please give me just one good reason why, because I honestly cannot think of a single one.

His coaching out weighs his in-game management failures. Somehow he makes them better than what he taketh away with bullpen moves, shifts, bizarre lineups, etc.

I don't believe this, I'm just giving a plausible reason to your question as that's all I can think of. I think your estimation of 8 lost manager games is high, but even if it's half that, that is bananas 25% into the season.

In theory yes this is the answer and had some merit when we were destined to lose 100 games and teaching was more important than winning and it had value when that crazy unprecedented covid season happened but at the end of the day the bottom line is wins and once this moron is costing us win after win then he's absolutely useless at that point. What's the point of great coaching if it literally leads to losses?

I mean I'm with you, just bringing up the only plausible counter argument if someone wants to die on that hill.

Maybe the answer is cheap - Don's fine (in theory? historically?), we have a 2022 option for him, a new manager is a guaranteed 3-5 year deal. We probably won't win the world series this year anyways, so let's see what happens and then reassess and not guarantee the money now. Kick that a year down the road before more expenses.

So it gets back to the guy signing the checks and that's why this has happened. So was it Bruce saying don't spend money and Ng is stuck with this guy, or a mutual decision? We never will know, but I really think the stank of Sherman is on everything here.

It is high, but only because we cannot assume that the right move in any situation would actually lead to a win. Bottom line is, players still need to execute. A manager (obviously never Don) could do everything right and still have his team lose, that's baseball. But when your team's manager has, only 1/4 of the way through the season, already negatively impacted EIGHT games, then your problem is glaring and flashing lights and screaming at you, but you still aren't doing anything about it. Do the Marlins win all 8 of those games if the manager makes the correct move? No, of course not. There are way more variables than, "Don't bring Shawn Armstrong into a one-run game you fucking idiot," but not bringing Shawn Armstrong into a one-run game definitely gives the team a better chance to win. I don't count the 8 manager losses as games that should be wins. I don't think even the most perfect manager creates an 8-game swing in the standings. But even half of those games? 4 more wins at this point puts the Marlins in a playoff spot (or a half game out). And 4 more wins at this point projects to 16 throughout the course of the season! And that's being conservative-ish in only turning half of Mattlingly's fuck ups from losses to wins. There are holes in this roster, this is not a great team as currently constructed. But with the pitching staff and an actually solid bullpen (when used correctly), this is a team that sneaks into a wild card spot, and you never know what happens from there.

I hate how much sense this makes, and it's what I have been thinking for a while now. I know Sherman and Ng have shown to not be the greatest of "baseball minds" by now, but even they have to see how atrocious Mattingly has been and how every possible statistic (one run losses, losses after the opposing team scores first, many many more) point toward him being garbage at his job.

But hey, we didn't bother to fill the two biggest holes on the roster this offseason despite having clear opportunities to do so, so we clearly weren't planning on competing. Just another year of rebuilding while we waste what could be one of the better pitching staffs in the league.

So leave him on the coaching staff and have someone else manage/pull the triggers.

As long as we continue the swing at ball 4 on a 3-0 count approach?   Anything else, I don’t want it!

Donnie should be like a school counselor to talk to the players when they need a talk, that's it.

I want him gone and far away from this team.  HOW DOES THIS MAN STILL HAVE A JOB? That, in and of itself, tells you all you need to know about this front office.

You'd have to imagine that if things don't get better before the All Star game, Ng will have to fire him just to distance herself from the stink.  At least I hope.
