He owns a lifetime .736 OPS, which is very average. He also had three "good" years in 2017, 2019 and 2021; not two. Meanwhile, he OPSed .582 with the Marlins last year and is OPSing .453 this season. To sit here and essentially act like this is who he has been his entire career is just wrong. So to answer you question, yes we are that stupid and he's always been that bad. Again - we've not said he's been great. But he has never been THIS BAD - his good years will skew this a bit, sure, but until 2022, he slashed .270/.325/.431 - that's decent enough and if he was doing that, we'd all be fine with it. During that time, averaged 22 HR and 81 RBI over 162 games [not per season, just per 162]. Since joining the Marlins, he's slashed .215/.256/.311 with just 10 homers and 40 RBI over 116 games. If he was doing his career norms, contract would be fine, we'd be fine, this lineup would be so much better. I'm really not sure what is eluding you here. Nobody has said he was great. Nobody has even said he was all that good. People have consistently said, "at least average." And that's about what he's been! 105 OPS+ before 2022. That's literally just above average. Again, I will concede his numbers are skewed upwards a bit due to his better seasons. But you're dying on this hill that he's always been garbage and that's simply not true.

Of course he's never been this bad.. there probably hasn't been many players in MLB history this bad. But it was pretty obvious he's always been BAD and him getting worse in his 30's shouldn't surprise anyone.
