Would this team have a better record under Donnie Baseball?

Featured Replies

Serious question. It was time to move on from Don,. I thought Skip did a great job up until the All Star Break. Since then he has made very questionable decisions. Including last night, when he decided not to walk Randy. Made no sense at all. Every game there is a glaring bad decision. Not sure what the difference has been.

This team has more talent than most teams Don had, I would suggest the team would have 4 to 5 more wins under his leadership.

Its rare that a manager is fired after 1 year, not advocating that is the right move, but it should be considered. This team is completely lost.

From 14 over to 1 under (with no signs of improving at all) in less than two months is a serious tank job.

This is the worst collapse by a Marlins team we've ever seen

Did Mattingly's team ever have a run like this team's first half? Even with the collapse I think Skip has at least shown he can be a winning manager. I feel like that has to account for something in this discussion cuz a lot of managers never even touch the success Skip started 2023 with. It generally feels like Donnie was always managing a losing squad.

Also, I don't think it would be right to have to start from scratch with a new manager yet again. Unless there's some serious issue like Ozzie in 2012 a manager should at least go into his second season. Consistency matters, it shouldn't be a one shot job.

Your threads keep getting worse and worse.

This forum did nothing but make fun of Don all of last year and throughout the entire first half of this season when the team was doing well. Now because the team has fallen off, we are seriously discussing whether or not we would be better off with Don?

With Don we would have never been 14 over.

And I would venture to say that the 2005 Marlins ushered in a bigger tank job considering that team was actually legitimately talented up and down the roster. They were 78-67 and in control of a WC spot on Sept. 13. They then went 3-12 the rest of the way.

OMG yes that year was so frustrating.

Based on pre-season predictions and stats like run differential one can say the 2023 Marlins have overachieved even with the collapse and thus Skip actually did really well?

Cuz there's two possible stories here:

The 2023 Marlins were a great team that collapsed in the second half...

or the 2023 Marlins were a bad team that overachieved for several months...

The two narratives paint opposite portraits of Skip's job so which one is it?

The 2005 team was probably the most talented team we've ever had on paper. There is no reason why that squad shouldn't have won at least 90 games and made the playoffs.

And yes absolutely. Literally no one on this forum expected this team to be 14 over at any point this season. Well, they got there, and now that they are a .500 team like most people anticipated, suddenly Don is better than Skip?

If Ng is allowed to seek employment elsewhere then the next GM may very well want their own dude. I wouldn't complain. I think he'll get at least one more season but I wouldn't be surprised especially if Ng goes elsewhere.

FYI if Rodney Robertson wouldn't have been so bad, the Marlins would be a couple games better and maybe in a playoff spot and then the thread isn't about firing Skip, it's about maybe extending him. Baseball is so crazy like that in how the narrative can change by the result of only a handful of games.

It's been more than a handful of games though. It's been trash for 2 months now versus 3 months of good baseball. Assuming this continues to seasons end his first season will be roughly half and half -and his trash 2 months have been worse than his 3 months were good.

We had a thread about Skip not long ago where people including me were saying maybe they should just go ahead and pick up his extra year option now

Yes its been a rough second half for sure but if we're only a handful of games better we probably have a playoff spot in hand today and the narrative on Skip changes 100% if that were the case. Robertson is one example that could have swayed the whole thing.

I think it's in between - they overachieved, but they aren't as bad as they've been lately.

Kim continually ignoring glaring holes on the roster certainly doesn't help either.

It all start at the top.  When we see a collapse & an opposite managerial way of coaching that resembles old management (Donny) I would say the FO is the culprit.

And the short answer is a resounding no regarding better under Don.

It does seem strange that some of the similar Don-esque moves appeared in the second half.....which makes one wonder if the FO is actually pulling levers.....and 2), if you had an awesome first half, why on earth would you change approaches from what was winning??

I’m not saying it isn’t true, but what evidence examples are there of skip doing anything differently 2nd half vs 1st half

Yea this is my thought too. Skip is probably managing the same but we think its different because the results have changed drastically.
