He'd be the most recent, and as it is, dude was just a super gifted athlete. He was going to figure it out eventually. Yeah, JT's ability to play catcher with that bat was special. I hope Mack is right and the new system has helped, that's what they need to have any chance of these high school guys (and the impressive crop of international players in the low minors) from actually doing anything.

July 16, 20241 yr Marlins final pick is Chase Centala from UCF. Got to see him a bunch of times in person. Had a bad second half of '24 due to injury. Mid-90s fastball, low-90s cutter that caused a ton of weak contact, generally great control (before injury). Multi-inning reliever. Once went five shutout innings against Number 2 Ole Miss in relief (2022) in an eventual UCF win.

August 12, 20241 yr Author It is really mind-bogglig and hard to explain that we really haven't drafted an impact bat since 2010. That year we drafted Yelich and Realmuto. Outside of that, despite drafting high we have swung and missed badly on a number of premium picks. Outside of a couple pitchers we haven't exactly lit it up on that side either. Josh Naylor and JJ Bleday are the only two bats we've drafted with any amount of success in the majors and neither Is exactly a superstar. This is a huge reason why we are where we are at this point the past few years. We went with a number of hitters this year and a few of them are off to decent starts. Carter Johnson is the guy the Fish are really banking on and he's looked ok so far but as a HS bat he's still a long way off. A couple others, Trimble, Jenkins-Cowart, Miller show some promise, albeit with a really small sample size. Morlando had exactly one at=bat before he got hurt for the year. So it's wait until next year to see what he offers. Drafting, international signings, and trade acquisitions are going to be the key to our success long-term and it is imperative we figure out the draft part sooner rather than later. I trust resources have been allocated to show improvement in that area. We really have had some horrific drafts in about the last 10 years when you look at it. Thus, why we cannot sustain success.

It’s very hard believing that a team can whiff in the draft as they have an it not be an internal problem? Bleday will be a stud in a couple yrs, yet I’m convinced If he was a Marlin at this present time, he’d be in the minors looking like another bust right now. Don’t get your hopes up, this draft should show that they prefer saving bills when they didn’t draft the prospects you wanted in the first round. Cutting corners like this is definitely effecting the farm systems and we wonder why player development is so handicapped. btw I enjoy your posts.
August 13, 20241 yr Author They went cheap on Morlando so they could sign Carter Johnson away from college. If you flip the two picks, that's the correct spots they should have gone but the draft cap makes things complicated at times. They don't really go cheap in the draft. They spend their allotted money like every other team does. The Marlins have just been horrific at drafting the right guys. It is an inexact science, but we have had some truly asinine draft strategies in recent years like drafting 23 and 24 year old college pitchers. The player development is a huge problem and today they completely cleaned house which is fantastic going forward. Again the team will succeed by putting their resources towards sharp drafting, key international signings, and shrewd trades. They are taking all the right steps in that direction it appears.

After the 10th round this is fine. Basically guaranteed signings and maybe one works out. Fills out the rosters.
August 16, 20241 yr Author Marlins 3rd round pick Gage Miller was the first 2024 draft pick to get promoted as he was moved up from Jupiter to Beloit. He looked really good at Jupiter in a short stint and is getting reps at both second and third base so far. Miller raked at Alabama with an OPS over 1.000 all three years and has an exceptional BB/K ratio as well.
