July 15, 20241 yr Author here's the thing, and it's totally my personal opinion. PJ morlando sucks and he's the classic older guy beating up on younger guys a la Shabazz Mohammad flame out in the NBA Draft. If I'm wrong then that's fantastic as I want the Marlins to win and I'll gladly eat crow. Unfortunately, I fell like I am way smarter and more advanced at looking at prospects than Bendix or any of his minions are. Again, they may prove smarter than me but I don't think so.

How it is worth 1 billion I don't get but at half that price Id try to raise investors. It's ridiculous that this franchise isn't one of the premier franchises in baseball as dumb as most of the other owners are.
July 15, 20241 yr My assumption is that they decided to buy in on a guy who was lower rated because the other guys they wanted went before their pick. I could be wrong. It's just concerning because this team has not been able to develop good hitters in ages, especially prep hitters.

On to the actual comment: Drafting high upside players will never pay off unless we get some people in the system who can develop hitting. We can look back at the draft flops for the Marlins over the years, but I can't think of many of them that felt like "reaches" at the time. If you are drafting guys that have scouting consensus on ability that don't develop, that seems like as much OR MORE of a problem with development than scouting. Morlando and Johnson are both bat over position guys and we need to be able to win on at least a few of these.

We haven't shown we can develop a bat since ... Realmuto, I guess? He'd be the most recent, and as it is, dude was just a super gifted athlete. He was going to figure it out eventually.

Very anecdotal but Joe Mack has credited the Marlins new approach to hitter development this year (lotsa analytics etc). A big piece here is guys really need buy in to what fish are doing (what that is, I have no idea).
