Does anyone know how much, if any, Loria and Co. lost last year on the Marlins? I ask because HWH said he lost 30 Mil. after the 97 season. Can not blame him for trying to sell and recoup something.

I read a 20M loss. That was released before the playoffs though it may or may not have projected postseason revenue and expenses (not to mention player bonuses, like Pierre's 400K for placing 10th in MVP voting).

 

P.S. HWH's reported 30M loss is widely considered a hoax. He moved a lot of revenue that the Marlins should have made to his own stadium authority by signing creative contracts between the two entities.

Point here is? Maybe Ft. Lauderdale or Orlando would be a better spot. Seems that So. Fla. does not care if they stay or not.

If the Miami market doesn't support this team, the Marlins will find a market that will. It's not like America is short on growing markets that could use a baseball team (New Orleans, Portland, Las Vegas, The Carolinas, Tennessee, etc).

Why must you be so damn negative all the time? It will take some time for the fan base to grow - winning a World Series, in some ways, is bad for this franchise. I thought getting to the playoffs would be better because winning the whole thing all of a sudden means we get a huge windfall. No. Fans started coming back when the Marlins started winning. If they keep winning, people will be back. Plain and simple. Some people are still on the fence with this team - remember, last time we won a WS we lost 118 games the following year. That is clearly not going to happen here, but people are a little gun shy.

 

The other thing, which a$$holes like LeBAstard dont realize is, people just dont have all the money right now. Holidays just passed. People live beyond their means in Miami - in fact, that is a way of life down here. There just isnt a lot of money lying around. But in the coming weeks, people will start showing up and buying tix. FanFest has been targeted as a big selling point. And as people get their tax refunds back, that money could be used towards getting tix.

 

I also think people are non-committal with season tix because of weather concerns and it is more flexible to get a 20 game deal. I am actually very encouraged if we have only 5,000 tix at this point - and they consist completely of 20 game deals. That is 20,000 fans instead of just 5,000. So LeRetard and others (ahem...Das) should try and take an objective look here.

I remember sending a letter to the Herald about this. It was clearly a hoax and the reporting was so bad about it - they let H Bomb get off scott free. No investigative reporting was done to call him out on it. And you know if Loria did something like that, the media would be all over it. H-bomb has got some real influence here in this community - and I wonder what that influence entails. Dont trust people in the waste management service.

moving is a real serious threat if there isn't a stadium by March 15. You can't blame the team for packing up. Fans who think there is 16 mil hanging around for Pudge are mistaken. Pudge may think about waiting til May 1. The Marlins aren't banking on it. They have low season ticket sales even after winning it all. If there isn't a stadium by March 15, Pudge's May 1 deadline is totally moot. Yet another factual, accurate post by me that will be ridiculed by the flat earth society. Jayson Stark hasn't thought that one up yet in his "insider" reports. Pudge is not going to be a Marlin.

Well I don't think anybody around here is saying that, i'm sure not. This site itself proves that there is a fanbase.

 

I'm just saying that if the marlins fanbase is as small as it's ticket sales suggest, their is a real and major threat for this team to move out of the Miami area altogether, and i'm sure everybody, myself obviously included, would hate to see that.

in the 20 - 41 game plans ... do you select the games you wanna go to plus the actual Fri - Sat games that come with them, or are they games you select before the season.

I think that fanfest is going to be huge for us, and just on my own, if the Marlins aren't able to sell at least another 2,000-2,500 packages before opening day, there will be some cause for concern.

 

 

 

And just another side note about losses/expected losses; the Marlins are in a very bad position for a defending champion. With the Angels, even though they were a "surprise" they spent Disney money the next year to keep the team intact, and the guy who just bought the team is a billionaire who can keep pace with anyone when it comes to spending. The point I'm getting at is we're in a really crappy situation as far as being a defending champion goes: our owner isn't worth all that much, he's expecting to lose about $15 mil this year, but a lot of teams go into the season expecting to lose more than that, however they overspend with the intention of making the playoffs to offset their loses. Loria can't do that because he doesn't have the money, and it's way too big of a risk for him because he could spend another $50 million make the playoffs, and still lose money because there is zero support in Miami from June-September.

 

I agree with Jonny, winning the World Series was great, but it sets expectations way to high for the casual fan who doesn't understand MLB economics...

We have the usual fanfest, but this year we will also have a dolphins style select-a-seat. that gets people out for the dolphins.

You can't judge yourself by Le Batard's numbers. Just because people don't buy 81 game plans doesn't mean they aren't season ticket holders, and Le Batard only counted 81 gamers. Basically, the two plans I was involved in buying were counted as one because they were two 41 gamers. We will be more than fine.
