Burnett signs with Yanks
Awesome.... Yankee's getting it done.... Hopefully one day when Loria gets snipered and we get an owner with deep pockets we'll be able to go after top notch players... In what world do you live in where AJ Burnett is a "top notch" player :lol The dude isn't even that good, and he has had multiple injury problems. If it were for a lot less money, it wouldn't be so bad. But players like A.J. Burnett should not be making nearly 17 million per. It's a horrible signing. I live in a world were the guy won 17 games... Also yea he's been hurt, but maybe he's over it. With the offense the Yankee's have he wont have to try to pitch a shutout everytime out and burn himself out. I also live in a world were just cause you hate the Yankee's it doesnt mean its a bad move. I piss on the Red Sox and everything about them but if they would have signed A.J. i would have been pissed cause its a good move. Name me one team that wouldnt love to have this guy in there rotation...

Greg Maddux to retire
Greg Maddux has thrown his last pitch. The four-time Cy Young winner will announce his retirement Monday at the baseball winter meetings, near his home in Las Vegas. Maddux, who turns 43 in April, ranks eighth on the career wins list with 355. He went 8-13 with a 4.22 ERA last season with the San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers. Maddux made three relief appearances in the playoffs for the Dodgers this year?he had an 0.00 ERA over four innings?and then filed for free agency amid speculation he would retire. On Friday, confirmation came from the office of Maddux?s agent, Scott Boras. Maddux, his family and Boras will hold a news conference at the hotel where the meetings are being held to announce one of baseball?s greatest pitchers is finished. Last month, Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti left open the possibility that Maddux would return for a 24th season in the majors. ADVERTISEMENT ?I told Scott we?d love to have him back, and we?re not going to be closing the door on Greg Maddux anytime soon,? Colletti said at the time. ?I?ve known him for a long, long time. I respect who he is and admire him for what he?s done. I know the impact he has on a club and on a franchise.? Maddux finished one win ahead of Roger Clemens on the career victory list. Overall, ?Mad Dog? was 355-227 with a 3.16 ERA, and is considered a certain first-ballot Hall of Famer when he becomes eligible after five years. Noted for impeccable control, Maddux won Cy Young Awards from 1992-95 and earned a record 18 Gold Gloves while with the Chicago Cubs, Atlanta, Dodgers and Padres. Maddux was an eight-time All-Star and won at least 13 games in 20 straight seasons, a streak that ended this year. The last-place Padres traded Maddux to the Dodgers on Aug. 19 for two minor leaguers to be named or cash, and went 2-4 in seven starts for Los Angeles. His last start for the NL West champions was a gem?he beat San Francisco, giving up one run and two hits in six innings. ?He?s remarkable,? Dodgers manager Joe Torre said after the 2-1 victory. ?I?ve watched and admired him from across the field. Tonight was, you could say, vintage.? Said Maddux following the win: ?In all honesty, I have felt this game has given me more than I ever thought it would in the first place. I just wanted to have a good game. I haven?t had many since I got here.? While Maddux finished on the West Coast, he will always be associated with top teams in Atlanta. Along with fellow 300-game winner Tom Glavine and John Smoltz, Maddux helped the Braves win division titles for more than a decade, and they won their lone World Series championship there in 1995. Glavine and Smoltz are both in their 40s and coming off arm operations, and their futures are in doubt. Longtime teammates on the field and golfing buddies away from the field, there has long been talk that Atlanta?s Big Three might someday be reunited?with election to the Hall on the very same day. Maddux made his major league debut in September 1986 with the Cubs. As a pinch-runner, in fact. He wound up losing that game in relief. His brother, Mike, started his big league career three months earlier as a pitcher for Philadelphia. He recently was hired as Texas? pitching coach.

Arod to play for Dominican team in WBC
-Born in New York, lived there for 4 years -Moved to Dominican Republic for 3 years -Moved back to the U.S. (Miami) at age 7 and has lived in America ever since... Years spent in the U.S. = 30 Years spent in the Dominican = 3 Sellout. Agree, but its not like the US gives a damn about the WBC any way. Really.....why because they lost.... If they played these games on a farm in Indiana these games would sellout....

Yahoo's Tim Brown: Cantu for Jonathan Sanchez?
Cantu>McPherson,Helms platoon... McPherson is unproven, yea he mashed the ball in AAA in a hitters park but he hasnt dont squat in ML level... Helms is only good off the bench,we all saw what he does as a starter... There's way to many people on this board that dont appreciate what Cantu did for this club last year.

HOF Ballot
NEW YORK (AP)?Career steals leader Rickey Henderson heads 10 first-time candidates on this year?s Hall of Fame ballot, joining holdovers Mark McGwire and Jim Rice?eligible for the final time. Other newcomers are Jay Bell, David Cone, Ron Gant, Mark Grace, Jesse Orosco, Dan Plesac, Greg Vaughn, Mo Vaughn and Matt Williams. Just 23 players are on the ballot, the smallest group ever. Holdovers include Harold Baines, Bert Blyleven, Andre Dawson. Tommy John, Don Mattingly, Jack Morris, Dale Murphy, Dave Parker, Tim Raines, Lee Smith and Alan Trammell. A 10-time All-Star who played from 1979-2003, Henderson holds the career records for steals (1,406) and runs (2,295), and his 2,190 walks are second to Barry Bonds? 2,558. Henderson also is first in caught stealing with 335. Henderson played for nine teams, winning the 1990 AL MVP award with Oakland. McGwire, eighth on the career home-run list with 583, has denied using illegal performance-enhancing substances but evaded questions when he appeared before a congressional committee, saying: ?I?m not here to talk about the past.? He received 128 votes in the 2008 election from 10-year members of the Baseball Writers? Association of America?matching his total from 2007, when he was eligible for the first time. His percentage of 23.6 percent was well short of the 75 percent necessary for election. Rice received 392 votes (72.2 percent) in 2008, 16 short of the 75 percent needed. Reporters who have been in the BBWAA for 10 or more consecutive years are eligible to vote, and the totals will be announced Jan. 12. Inductions, which will include anyone elected by the Veterans Committee, are scheduled for July 26 at Cooperstown, N.Y. The Veterans Committee vote will be announced Dec. 8. The complete ballot: Harold Baines, Jay Bell, Bert Blyleven, David Cone, Andre Dawson, Ron Gant, Mark Grace, Rickey Henderson, Tommy John, Don Mattingly, Mark McGwire, Jack Morris, Dale Murphy, Jesse Orosco, Dave Parker, Dan Plesac, Tim Raines, Jim Rice, Lee Smith, Alan Trammell, Greg Vaughn, Mo Vaughn, Matt Williams. I hope McGwire,Sosa, and Bonds never get in... I really hope Dawson,Morris,Smith, and Orosco get a fair shot... Morris was awsome in the 80's and clutch in post season...

Pirates Want Treanor?
According to league sources, for a little more than a week the Florida Marlins have been shopping catcher Matt Treanor. The team initiated talks with several clubs they felt were in the market for catchers. Treanor, who underwent surgery on his left hip area after the season, is expected to be ready for Spring Training. Reports have already linked Treanor possibly heading to the Pirates or Tigers. Entering his second season of arbitration, Treanor could make about $900,000 or $1 million, a price the Marlins don't seem to want to pay. John Baker has the edge to be the starting catcher. However, there is speculation from a league source that the Marlins are positioning themselves to pursue Ivan Rodriguez in free agency. Pudge, of course, was Florida's catcher on the 2003 World Series title team. Source: MLB.com Sweet....get me Pudge Rodriguez

Pirates fulfill their pitching depth
waste of time.... they barely hit 90mph... there houndreds of kids here that deserve a chance more than these guys... You're talking about two kids who hadn't ever picked up a baseball as of a year ago... and they're hitting strikes... give them some time in what is a VERY low risk move... the Pirates could look smart here there just trying to sell tickets.... They were taken to california to work out with Tom House who's an excellent pitching coach. A little time with him and he could teach a monkey to throw strikes.... These kids wont last long...

Michael Vick used family pets for practice
lurid new details have emerged in the dogfighting case that led to Michael Vick's conviction last year and effectively ended his promising NFL career at age 27 according to the New York Daily News. Vick, formerly of the Atlanta Falcons, who was sentenced to 23 months in federal prison last Dec.10 for his role in bankrolling a dogfighting operation called "Bad Newz Kennels" on his Surry County (Va.) property and for killing some of the underperforming dogs, placed family pet dogs in the fighting ring as trained pit bulls and "caused major injuries" to the pets, according to a 17-page Department of Agriculture report released Friday. The Aug. 28, 2008 report describes how Vick and two associates, Purnell Peace and Quanis Phillips, "thought it was funny to watch the pit bull dogs belonging to Bad Newz Kennels injure or kill the other dogs." The report also states that in mid-April of last year, Vick, Peace and Phillips executed approximately six dogs by hanging and drowning. The hanging deaths occurred "by placing a nylon cord over a 2x4 that was nailed to two trees located next to the big shed." The men drowned the others "by putting the dogs' heads in a five-gallon bucket of water." The USDA originally conducted a search of Vick's Moonlight Road property in June 2007 on suspicion of drugs. But authorities uncovered a grisly dogfighting operation that ultimately resulted in one of the NFL's most electrifying stars becoming its most reviled player. If Roger Godell lets this P.O.S. anywhere the NFL again i'm taking him out myself....

Why so few NL MVP for Hanley Ramirez?
It's not as if the Marlins existed in another universe; their 84-77 record was a half-game better than the Dodgers', and they did it in the best division in the National League -- the division with the world champions. Albert Pujols deserved the Most Valuable Player Award. This is not to question anyone's vote for Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, Manny Ramirez or Lance Berkman. But Hanley Ramirez 11th? Only Pujols and Berkman had more runs created. His OPS of .940 was the best of any NL middle infielder, better than Utley's .915. Ramirez's job wasn't to drive in runs -- it was to create them. He reached base 40 percent of the time, hit 33 homers, stole 35 bases and led the league with 125 runs. And he did it with average defensive skills at a critical defensive position.
