Marlins Least Likely to Win NL East
Joe Sheehan of Baseball Prospectus thinks we'll finish 4th. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/base...x.html?bcnn=yes Not that I care. He has no clue what's going on with the Marlins. Stupid article.

Most underappreciated player on the team?
On this board, Jeremy Hermida. Yep... people forget he's only 24 and that he put up great numbers back in high school.
-
Could we actually keep this team intact next season?
Because Uggla should be able to get more in arby than the $5.5 million Hanley agreed to in his contract.

Could we actually keep this team intact next season?
You could do this for about $43 million: Treanor - 1.0 Cantu - 3.5 Uggla - 8.0 Hanley - 5.5 Dallas - 0.8 Hammer - 3.5 Cody - 2.5 Hermida - 2.5 Ricky - 3.0 Scott - 3.0 Josh - 2.5 Anibal - 0.4 Cheap veteran - 1.0 Cheap veteran - 1.0 Minimum wage (11 players) - 4.4

I'm 60% sure that Mitre is being non-tendered. I'm 100% sure that Mitre is being non-tendered.

You're probably looking at $60 million.

Marlins in pursuit of Fuentes
Thanks. The Chicago guy included Ricky. http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/chi-2...0,4715506.story The Marlins are currently carrying 15 arbitration-eligibles, including infielder Dan Uggla, outfielder Jeremy Hermida and starters Scott Olsen, Josh Johnson and Ricky Nolasco. That could prompt general manager Admin Beinfest to trade first baseman Mike Jacobs or outfielders Cody Ross and Josh Willingham.

First Nady is done for the year. What do you mean by that? He's playing.

Marlins in pursuit of Fuentes
the last thing we need is another arbitration eligible player next season (which Nady is) We're very likely either targeting FAs at the end of the year, players that will make the minimum, or players signed to cheap contracts. Do you know the definitive number of arbitration eligible players we'll have? The other day I read it was 16 but the article was from a Chicago paper so I'm not so sure the writer would really know.

Add the Herald to the boycott list?
The Sun Sentinel has a far smaller reader ship and they've been forced to cut jobs left and right recently You may be right about that, I don't know, but the Herald announced a massive job cut a couple of weeks ago.

Jeremy Hermida
My problem with Cody's defense is that he doesn't cover nearly enough room out there in center. He has great instincts out there and takes beautiful routes, but he just doesn't have the natural speed to cover all that room at the DS. I guess you may be surprised but Cody ranks 4th out of 22 CFs in RZR and he ranks 7th best out of the 22 in Innings / OOZ. He's having a solid year both with the bat and the glove. --- minimum 505 innings

2) I dont think because ladies think Hermida is cute that he is a fan favorite. A fan favorite is loved because of character and skill. A fan favorite is a favorite player of the fans. It really has nothing to do with "character and skill." It would be crazy to say that Cody Ross is better than Hermida, or even Cantu and Willingham, but there is no arguing that Cody is a fan favorite. Cody Ross is having a better year than any of the guys you mentioned. It's not crazy to say it. It's certainly debatable. He's having a better year (I would argue that Cantu is having a better year), but I don't believe he is a better player. That said, maybe you are right, it's not that crazy. Not if you take defense into account. Cody is having a good year with the glove.

Angels sweep the Red Sox
2.33 ERA 1.28 WHIP 27 BB / 42 K's (in 43 innings) (entering the day) It's incredible how a far from dominant closer will be asking for 15 mill per year this offseason, but he'll be asking for exactly that. I guess he bends but doesn't break. I don't think he's worth $15 M but to his credit he's 10 for 10 (*) in one-run saves and those are the tough ones. (*) eyeballed game log so I may be off a bit.

Most high-value prospects would be looking at a rookie year right now. I also think that the Marlins are f***ing with his plate approach trying to make him aggressive, and as a result they are turning walks into Ks, the Reds did the same thing to Paul O'Neill and he didn't flourish until he got away from them and was allowed to approach the game on his terms. this is what I'm really scared of, when you compare to where he was before in discipline to where he is now.... Can you explain? I ask because last year after the break he had a walk every 10.7 ABs and this year he has a walk every 10.4 ABs so he's walking a bit more than he did during the one extended period of time that he had success in the majors.

Phillies tried to get Holliday and Fuentes
Citizens is nowhere near the hitters park that Coors is and they are hitters parks for completely different reasons so you shouldn't assume he would take advantage of Citizens as he has done of Coors. Holliday's road OPS the last three seasons is good but not great and he's suppose to be great. If he was supposed to be good then he wouldn't be overrated. He's supposed to be great and he's not meaning he's overrated. This is where he ranked in Road OPS the last three seasons: '06 - 71st (minimum 250 PAs) '07 - 39th (minimum 250 PAs) '08 - 42nd (minimum 150 PAs) Those rankings are not great.

Phillies tried to get Holliday and Fuentes
He's hitting .301 with a .400 OBP and a .859 OPS away....I'd take that any day of the week from my LF. ...and yet, it's a HUGE difference at home, just like it has been his entire career. That, in itself, will make some team overpay for him. This sort of reminds me of Mark Teixiera. Look at how his #'s no longer look the same, since he got to Atlanta. Teixeira is also overrated but not as much as Holiday.

Phillies tried to get Holliday and Fuentes
These are his career splits: Coors - .362 / .425 / .656 / 1.081 Road - .277 / .341 / .449 / .790 His "greatness" is a Coors creation. He's overrated. Case closed.

Holliday is overrated, but I totally agree with you. Good thing it was rejected. How is Holliday overrated? That makes absolutely zero sense to me. Look at his home / away splits.

Post Game 7/19/08
1. I think we found ourselves a new starting catcher. I haven't watched all his games but it looks like he can hit. I'm not so sure he can throw.

Eric Byrnes is hilarious
I don't find him funny either. Mute wasn't enough. He made me shut-off the TV.

How come you guys werent saying anything when jeremy hermida had that 12 game hitting streak? Seriousley, you have to show some patience. The talent is there, it's just taking him a little longer to use his talents and become the great hitter we know he can. And Mungo, how the hell is he a bust? He showed that he can play at a very high level against good competition. To me that isnt a bust. He has never done it on a consistant basis. Until he does that, stays healthy for a full year and hits more than 17 or 18 HR's, I'll believe he is worth what we drafted him at. Unless he does that he is a bust. Well, he's been healthy basically all this year and is on pace for 18 home runs. And he's tied for 21st out of 25 RFs in OPS. He has stunk this year. His OPS+ at 11 out of 16 in the NL (I don't like to compare between leagues). That's in front of Jeff Francoeur, Ken Griffey Jr, Geoff Jenkins, Hunter Pence, and Austin Kearns. He's within 10 points of Randy Winn, Kosuke Fukudome, Justin Upton, and Andre Eithier. He hasn't been great, but his .737 OPS is only .002 under league average. I wouldn't say he has "stunk". There's nothing wrong in comparing hitters across the leagues. You're using guys with fewer than qualifying ABs. I don't like doing that except for catchers. I dont know what you mean by 10 points. Do you mean 10 OPS+ points? If yes, 10 OPS+ points is a lot. Ethier's OPS+ is 12 higher than Hermida's. Also, I would want my RF to hit more than the league average that inlcludes pitchers and catchers.
