We can only carry so many pitchers, and I'd rather have Beckett, Burnett, Leiter, Willis, Valdez, Mota, Alfonseca, Mecir, Riedling, Perisho, and Jones over him, and you have to figure that Hagerty gets a roster spot. I was in a card store the other day (for the first time in quite a while)...I was a bit amazed at all of the different companies currently producing cards. I was looking at some Rookie Cards for current Marlins but was having a tough time determining what would be considered "the officially recognized" rookie card for a particular player... Our farm system has been terribly depleted lately, going from one of the best to one of the worst in a matter of a few years. I hope we don't need to make major deals at the deadline this year where we give up top prospects. 708324[/snapback] Gross exaggeration...we do not have one of the worst minor league systems. The loss of Alisson is obviously hurting us right now. Look for the upcoming draft, which includes some extra compensatory picks, to bolster the system. I know the players are doing their best (they are among the finest athletes in any sport.) So, in my frustratiion, I blame the coaches, particularly Bill Robinson but, ultimately, Jack. C'mon Chin High, I expect a bit more from a savy veteran like yourself. I'm sure you realize there is absolutely no correlation between Spring Traing performance and Regular Season results - especially with a veteran squad like the Marlins. To call for Robinson's head is a knee-jerk reaction...if this pattern continues into May however, then there will be reason for concern. Until then, sit back, relax, and enjoy the rest of Spring Training...I'm sure you'll find plenty to complain about come April 4th. :thumbup

The one bright spot though was Encarnacion, (as much as I hate to say it.) he had 3 at-bats and absolutely crushed the ball each at bat. First at-bat he rocketed one right at the right fielder. The 2nd at-bat he smoked a double to right-center field. Very few jobs up for competition. Back-up catcher is the most interesting, because the winner earns atleast 30 starts and the candidates are a charismatic and varied cast. However the second infield reserve spot is also of significant interest. Joe Dillon. Wilson Delgado. Lenny Harris. Derek Wathan. Josh Wilson. Chris Aguila should feel comfortable knowing he has no notable challengers for the second outfield reserve spot. Unless the team sees Willingham more as an outfielder or they pick another infielder... There may be an open bullpen spot if the club decides to send Spooneybarger to AAA to find his control in homer-friendly Albuquerque. McKeon wants an extra lefty, but with the Jim Mecir signing it's not quite a necessity. Maybe opening a door for Bump, Howard, Wayne, Hutch, Castillo or Moehler. 702708[/snapback] I'm starting to like Chad Bentz's chances.
