Marlins reacquire Benitez; send off Messenger to S.F.
You can never have enough capable arms at the back of the bullpen. If it costs us a low level prospect, I love to bring back Benitez. The worst that happens is he can be traded again at the trade deadline.

Commissioners OK plan to have Marlins change name, spring-training sit
I don't think that they can force the Marlins to train in Homestead, plus the Marlins have a lease in Jupiter that runs through 2022. Maybe they can work out an arrangement where they can play a few games there each spring though.

Dontrelle and Miggy?
Dontrelle maybe, Cabrera no. But I don't think it is the .500 mark that will determine if they are on the block. I think it will have more to do with what happens between now and July 31st with the stadium. Also, I think it will have a lot to do with just how desperate a team is to get a pitcher like Willis. From a purely baseball standpoint, trading Willis now may be a smart move if you can get 3 or 4 major pieces back, such as a young catcher and centerfielder.

Obermueller is NOT an MLB Starting Pitcher
Sometimes you need to look at game logs when judging players in the PCL and while I realize a 4.17era is nothing special, that is what his era is when you remove his back to back starts where he was shelled. In his last 3 starts, he has a 3.68era and while his walks are up, his hits are way down. He isn't even allowing a hit an inning. Opposing hitters are batting .244 against him. But even so, the reason why you can't give up on this guy yet is....... HE'S 22 YEARS OLD. Some of you need to slow down and think for a second. Not every pitcher is going to be a DTrain or a Kazmir or whatever right out of the minor leagues. Sometimes there needs to be an adjustment period. And for the record, Petit had 1 spot start this year in the bigs, and he went 7ip 4h 2r(2er) 0bb 5k .167baa I appreciate the fact that he is 22 years old and still may need time to develop. But what I am judging my opinion on is that after watching him pitch, his stuff isn't good enough to be anything more than a #5/AAAA starter. There just isn't much of a track record for success for guys who throw under 90 mph, with an average at best breaking pitch and struggles with command. To me, Petit is Obermueller. An occasional starter/long relief pitcher. Maybe he develops into something more, I just don't see it. As for Petit's one start this year, its such a small sample size, you can't judge anything based on that. Obermueller has had some decent starts this year as well, but that still doesn't mean I want him in my rotation.

what want wrong on fri and saturday?
I swear the met fans sitting in front of me smelled like wet dogs. hahahaha good one. i went to the game on saturday night and its just so sad how you can hear all the mets fans cheering over the marlins. I felt like i was at Shea stadium with everyone cheering over the marlins. :thumbdown It was pretty loud from the Mets fans last night. I find it annoying and obnoxious, but there's only one way to swing it to a pro-marlins crowd....and that is by beating the Mets at home. The Marlins gave the Marlins fans there the last two games very little to cheer about.

Saturday Round Up: Coghlan, Cousins homer
When will Coghlan be promoted to Jupiter? He seems to have proven he can handle the SAL.

Obermueller is NOT an MLB Starting Pitcher
Dontrelle, JJ, Sanchez, Olsen, Nolasco. When ony two of those guys are healthy, this sh*t happens. I realize the frustration that Freddi seems enamored with him, but whatever...I think most of us have realized he just doesn't make a whole lot of sense most of the time. As for the notion of calling up a prospect...who? Gaby and Volstad are both struggling. Garcia and West are hurt and Petit's in Arizona. I have no idea what your love fest for Petit is. You are right tho, he is in Arizona. Tucson, Arizona. Where he has a 5.74 ERA, averaging about 5 innings a start and has walked 21 compared to 22 Ks. So I guess you think he could start for us with those numbers. Compared to some of our guys his walk totals are right in line. Obie has had consecutive bad starts. I like him alot better in long relief. But we just don't have anyone else right now that is ready. The Dutchboy is an option but I wopuld much rather see him mature a bit more in the minors rather than damaging his confidence pitching here. I was just about to post the same thing about Petit. What am I missing about him that some people love? I have watched him pitch and he is not any better than Wes Obermueller. I know that the Julio trade ended up being a disaster, but it was not because we lost Petit. If he was still here, we'd being havig a "Petit is NOT a MLB starting pitcher" thread right now. The truth is that neither guy should be starting in the Majors, but until we start getting some of our DLed pitchers back, we'll have to live with Obermueller for a few more starts.

Obermueller is NOT an MLB Starting Pitcher
To be fair, Obermueller was facing the best offense in the league. The Mets have put a lot of runs on better pitchers than Wes this year.

Opinion: Baseball? Not Tonight
I completely agree. Baseball Tonight is a shell of what it once was, as is Sportscenter, and just about everything else on ESPN. It was a simple formula...put intelligent people on their shows to talk intelligently about sports. Now it is just morons screaming at you. Until they get away from the likes of Stephen A. Smith and anyone on Around the Horn, I won't watch.

Marlins Talk on WQAM
I don't remember the last time I listened to 560 for anything other than a Marlins or Panthers game. Once, the Marlins leave that station, I'll probably take it off my presets in my car. Is that really what the topic was? Favorite Dolphin moment?? That sounds like the most boring show ever....what were the other topics of discussion? Marino vs. Montana? Memories of the '72 Dolphins? Why the Orange Bowl was great? It's no wonder that the LeBatard show is beating them in the ratings.

UM/Dolphin Stadium Article
http://www.palmbeachpost.com/sports/conten...ebowl_0522.html Leaving home? UM likely to soon announce plan to exit Orange Bowl Click-2-Listen By Jorge Milian Palm Beach Post Staff Writer Tuesday, May 22, 2007 MIAMI Like many of his neighbors, Antonio Mesa has spent much of the past two decades selling parking spots for University of Miami games at his corner-lot home across the street from the Orange Bowl. A 68-year-old retiree, Mesa eagerly anticipates each football season, and not only for the $200 or more he can earn on each game day by allowing fans to park in his front yard. Mesa has built such camaraderie with his customers that he regularly tailgates with them before and after games. "It's like family," he said. So it is with great unease that Mesa discusses the growing possibility that the Hurricanes will move their games from the Orange Bowl to Dolphin Stadium as early as the 2008 season. UM Athletic Director Paul Dee said Sunday that a decision will be made within a "month or so." "We're very worried," Mesa said from his front porch on a recent afternoon. "We're praying that the Hurricanes don't leave." Divine intervention may be all that will keep UM from cutting ties with the Orange Bowl, where the Hurricanes have played home games since 1937. Dee said that a final decision remains "up in the air," but university insiders privately say UM's days in the venerable stadium are numbered. The choice comes down to this for Hurricanes officials: Accept the city of Miami's proposal of a $200 million renovation of the Orange Bowl, which would require UM to triple its stadium user fee and subsidize other costs. It isn't known how much UM would have to contribute to the renovation cost. The project would include new restrooms to replace the OB's notoriously small and outdated facilities, structural improvements, chair-back seating and new concourses. The upside? The Hurricanes remain the OB's primary tenant and retain their historic ties with the stadium. Head about 15 miles north to Dolphin Stadium, which would provide UM and its fans with many of the amenities sorely lacking in the Orange Bowl. One UM source said a move is a "financial slam dunk" because the school would share parking and concession sales at Dolphin Stadium - unlike the university's agreement with the Orange Bowl - and would stand to make more money on high-end club seating and suites. The downside? Sharing the facility with the Dolphins and Marlins and forcing students to travel farther for games from the school's Coral Gables campus. "The Orange Bowl has all of the intangibles - the history, the ghosts that live in the rafters, the nostalgia," Dee said. "But when it comes to the physical or the tangible, Dolphin Stadium has that." Dee said the university's administration must decide whether it's worth the money to "save the intangibles, or do we say: The Orange Bowl was a great place, but stadiums have moved on and maybe it's time for us to step up" and play in a modern facility. "That's really where the debate is," Dee said. Some cling to tradition There's no debating the issue for former Hurricanes receiver Lamar Thomas, who played for national championship teams at UM in 1989 and '91. If the Hurricanes leave the Orange Bowl, Thomas said it will be more evidence that college football is trading its traditional roots for the bottom line. "When I think of UM football, I think of only one place and that's the Orange Bowl," said Thomas, who ranks second in UM history with 144 receptions and 23 touchdown catches. "It's going to be very weird calling (Dolphin Stadium) home. When they leave the Orange Bowl, well, that's going to be a sad day." Don Bailey Jr., who played at UM from 1979-82 and serves as the Hurricanes' radio analyst, half-jokingly says he has always planned to have his ashes sprinkled on the Orange Bowl field. "The greatest days of my life have been spent there," Bailey said. But, Bailey insists, it's no shock that UM is seriously considering high-tailing it to northern Dade County. Bailey said the city of Miami has done little to update the Orange Bowl since the Dolphins left the stadium in 1987, leaving the Hurricanes at a competitive disadvantage. "The Orange Bowl lost the Miami Dolphins," Bailey said. "The Orange Bowl lost the Orange Bowl. So nobody should be surprised now if the Orange Bowl loses the Miami Hurricanes. In reality, if Miami goes from the Orange Bowl to Dolphin Stadium, they just went from the worst stadium in the ACC to the best." Fans appear to be split on whether to stay or go. Bill Rose, spokesman for the Palm Beach County chapter of the Hurricane Club, said fans have become increasingly disenchanted with the Orange Bowl's tiny bathrooms, scarce concession areas, substandard seating and inadequate parking. "The old lady has run her course," Rose said of the Orange Bowl. "The great stadium that we know and love, it's best that it go away." But several fans who posted messages on Canestime.com last week decried the potential move. Posters complained that Dolphin Stadium lacks the personality and history of the Orange Bowl. "Renovate! Please!" said a message from 5xgocanes. "Man, I'm gonna go insane when they tear (the Orange Bowl) down." "Since when do real men need nice stadiums and facilities?" chimed in another poster. For UM fans from Broward and Palm Beach counties, a move uptown would bring the Hurricanes closer to them. Dee said 32 percent of UM's season-ticket base is made up of fans residing in Broward and Palm Beach counties. University officials believe that number would increase significantly at Dolphin Stadium and could also mean an uptick in fans traveling to games from the state's west coast. Move seems matter of time Steve Marcus, chairman of the Hurricane Club in Broward County, said UM has no choice but to leave the Orange Bowl. "It's not a question of what the university would like to do," Marcus said. "It's a question of what it needs to do. How much longer can you allow that thing to deteriorate?" Dolphin Stadium officials have put the full-court press on UM, hosting a group of 30 students at the facility two weeks ago and following up last week by giving the grand tour to university President Donna Shalala, other UM administrators and several boosters. "There wasn't anything not to like," said one UM official. Another university official said that a potential snag with Dolphin Stadium regarding the length of a lease has mostly been resolved. Dolphin Stadium had initially offered a 10-year lease. "Every landlord wants a short lease. Any tenant wants a long one,'' Dee said. Dolphin Stadium officials declined to comment Monday. Meanwhile, the city of Miami is awaiting a response from UM to its latest $200 million proposal, which would include renovations to the north and south sides of the Orange Bowl, according to a spokesman for City Manager Pete Hernandez. An earlier proposal priced at $170 million sought to upgrade only the south side of the stadium. "It's getting down to the point where we have enough data where decisions can be made," Dee said. While UM administrators plot their next move, small-time entrepreneurs like David Gomez keep their fingers crossed that the Hurricanes will stay in the Orange Bowl. Gomez, a father of three small children, has been parking a handful of cars next to his duplex just west of the stadium for 16 years. The $50 to $100 he earns on UM game days is a "little bonus" for the family budget that he's come to count on. "Nobody around here wants to see them leave," Gomez said. "But we're worried that is what's going to happen." Nothing really new or earth-shattering here. The only really new information is that UM and DS are appearently close to resolving the length of the lease issue.

What cities are "NBA cities"
san antonio is an nba city obviously. indianapolis is still a basketball city and always will be, mostly cause of the location. San Antonio? They didnt even sell out game 1 of the conference finals last night. that one is on the organization. fans werent even aware tickets were available. I find that hard to believe. The first thing most ticket buyers would do is go to ticketmaster.com (or the team website which directs them to ticketmaster)and check to see if tickets are available. If they didn't do that, they would call the team and they would tell them tickets are available They wouldn't check the newspaper for an ad or watch TV waiting for someone to tell them tickets availble. Besides, even if it was the case that thousands of Spurs fans were all not aware tickets were available, how does that explain why there are still tickets in multiple price levels available for the game on Tuesday.

Justin Miller joins bullpen
Apparently he really likes Billy Koch...lol Tattooed on the newest Marlin's buttocks is the phrase: "I (heart) Billy Koch." Koch, a former reliever who spent time with the Marlins, paid Miller $1,000 plus picked up the $80 tab from Mom's Tattoos in Dunedin before the 2004 season for the advertisement. Koch felt so bad for Miller's wife, Jessica, for "having to see it every day," that he gave Jessica an additional $500. http://www.palmbeachpost.com/marlins/conte...s_bar_0521.html

Game 3 Thoughts
I want to get excited, but then I think we just swept the Devil Rays..... oh well.... :woohoo Yes, the Devil Rays looked meh in this series, but they did come in with a 4 game win streak and the Fish rolled them in the first two games and had a nice comeback today. It's beating teams like the D-Rays that will keep this team in the race at the end of the year. I think the best part of this 6 game run was the continued good work from the starting rotation. Also, Hermida has been huge...as has been Uggla and Gregg. Keep up it up against the Phils and Mets!

Finally some news....
From Sarah Talalay's blog on Sun-Sentinel.com http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sfl-blogs-main...26725.htmlstory Growing weary of the years-long effort to try to secure state funding for a ballpark for the Marlins, at least a few Miami-Dade County Commissioners are ready to move ahead without state help. And if Commissioner Dennis Moss has his way, that should cost Florida its name on the Marlins? jerseys, too. A name change - to Miami Marlins - has been contemplated for years if a new ballpark is ever built in Miami. Moss pushed for the new name again Thursday during a meeting of the commission?s Airport and Tourism Committee. Moss also suggested that since the county plans to contribute millions of dollars in hotel bed and sports facilities taxes to the ballpark, which it would also own, the team should hold spring training at the Homestead baseball stadium once its lease at Roger Dean Stadium in Jupiter expires. After all, Moss said, the county also helped pay for the Homestead ballpark, which was meant to be the spring home of the Cleveland Indians, but was abandoned after it was damaged during Hurricane Andrew. ?I wholeheartedly support this,? Commissioner Rebeca Sosa said. If a stadium is built, Sosa said, ?We agree to change the name to Miami Marlins. There?s a commitment with them that it stays. The state didn?t give you a penny, that means you don?t belong to Florida. We are going to build the stadium so you belong to Miami, you belong to Dade County. Commissioner Carlos Gimenez also said it?s time to give up on state funding and put a ballpark proposal before the commission so it can decide whether to move forward. ?Waiting for this state money has probably cost us a couple hundred million dollars. I think it?s time we move on,? Gimenez said. ?Forget the state ? if we had just gone ahead and built it, it would have cost a couple hundred million dollars less than now. Forget the state, it?s not going to happen.? Gimenez suggested the funding gap in the $490 million ballpark plan could be bridged by value engineering or some other method. ?Bring it forward. The final decision will be up to the board of county commissioners,? he said. ?We need to move on. The more we delay the more it?s going to cost. Let?s bring something to the table. We need to vote it up or down, then we?ll know.? A move to the Homestead baseball stadium is unlikely in the near future: the Marlins? lease at Roger Dean Stadium runs through 2017 with two additional five-year options. Good to see some people involved are talking about the stadium. Also, nice to hear some initiative being taken. The Homestead idea is a dumb one and most likely isn't practical for a spring training site. If they want the name changed to Miami Marlins, by all means....just get something done already!! Anyone who is a resident of Miami-Dade should be emailing and calling their commissioners urging them to support this. Anyone have contact info?

Hermida sparks life to the lineup
Do you think when De Aza comes back he will bat leadoff? This is what my lineup would look like De Aza Hermida Ramirez Cabrara Willingham Uggla Jacobs Olivo there's no way de aza is leading off and there's no way jake is hitting 7th Why not let De Aza lead off? If Reggie is given the chance to do it, I would certainly give De Aza the opportunity. He's got the speed for it and showed a pretty good eye in the spring and before he got hurt.

The Draft
Baseball America lists Wieters as their #4 prospect in the draft. I wonder why Mayo has him dropping? Signability maybe? I think he's a Boras client.

Tuesday Roundup: Brett Carroll remains hot
Just to add to that, I was kind of hoping someone would say "zOMg he was soooo bad in his starts for the marlins though!!" I thought he was very impressive as a 21 year old in the majors,he just had a few bad breaks and calls. He has an awesome delivery, isn't afraid to challenge hitters and his curve is extremely impressive. He is Josh Beckett Lite. I agree. Even though he struggled a bit, his stuff is awesome. Once he gets a bit more experience, he's going to be a top of the rotation pitcher. He's got a great curve and he can throw his fastball past hitters. Give him the rest of the year in AA and he'll be in the big league rotation next season.
