First impressions of AJ

Featured Replies

He pitched pretty well for his first outing in over a year, and it only gets better from here.

What are your first impressions of his start tonight?

Very good first impression...

he had a live fastball going and got the velocity up there pretty high, not 100%, but impressive. When he starts mixing in his 12-6 along with the fastballs he'll be lethal, but that'll come with time...

AJ did a very good job!

Threw alot of fastballs to help get on track. After awhile they started teeing off on him. Mixed it up nicely in the 4th inning.

It was everything you could have expected from his first start.

Too bad we couldn't give him any offense to help him out. :(

that wraps it up, IMO.

It sucks that our offense didn't back him up, though. Would've been a hell of a story to win on AJ's return.

I thought he was good. He doesn't have his confidence in all his pitches which really hurt him I think because mets were sittin on his fastball. He only gave up two runs with really one pitch though so I am pretty impressed with it. I bet his first outing at Pro Player will be when he is really starting to hit his marks

we have a long way ahead with AJ. the promising inning was the 4th, where he was able to consistently throw something other than the fastball.

I'd like to see him throw first pitch strikes more often, seems like he feel behind 2-0 on almost every batter. Other than that he pitched well.

Very solid by Burnett. He had the velocity up there but you can notice that he was a bit tired in the the 3-4 inning. He went down to 92 MPH but stamina and control will come with time. His control was way off but what can you expect, he hasnt pitched in a year. He also had a very good Curveball, it was breaking good and established it better in the later innings. I cant wait to see how his elbow reacted tommorow.

Overall, i give it a 7/10 performance, maybe even 8.

Yeah thats what killed him.

In all he pitched pretty well. Just had trouble getting ahead of hitter and getting easy outs. 9 pitches to Seo??

Still better than Oliver. :)

AJ was all we could have hoped from him today. Only giving up 2 ER was great, and if not for Aventures in Right Field with your host Miguel Cabrera it might have only been one. He was overthrowing a bit, and you could tell because he would miss either high or really low, but he'll settle down.

If only we had an offense or the pen to back him up.

i was at the game tonight....don't know if i can add anything over what you saw on TV or not. my impressions were that AJ has some work to do both on his stuff and his stamina. it seemed like he was basically throwing fastballs on every pitch. it was very evident as he got deep into counts....if the batter could force AJ to get to 3 balls, they knew they could expect the fastball. I also got the impression, as the game went on, that the Mets were taking the (wise) tactic of forcing AJ to throw as many pitches as possible in every at-bat. this is a wrinkle in his return that i hadn't predicted - until AJ can prove that he can keep his stuff at a high level beyond 40 or 50 pitches, then all a team has to do is take a ton of pitches early and then they get to face either A) AJ throwing 92-94 mph fastballs or B) our middle relievers - both of which are preferable to the stuff he was throwing early.

anyhow, enough with the negative stuff. i loved seeing him out there. the stuff i saw in the first inning was astonishing. those early hitters did not have a chance. if we expect him to get better which each outing, then this game was a VERY good indicator for the future.

reminded me of a spring training outing where he worked on only one or two things in order to get consistency and work on stamina

did you notice how he seemed to throw pitches in bunches

like 8 curveballs in a row or nothing but fastballs located in one specific area. this is exactly the way pitchers approach spring games.

overall it was a good outing considering that he hasnt pitched in 13 months

fastball looked live but not quite 100%, curveball had some bite on it but once again wasnt 100%.

the real test is how he feels tomorrow and the day after.

this outing wasnt about a win tonight but for a build up for the 2nd half stretch run.

if AJ can be a full time horse again there will be a major move made and I think some of the signs are already being shown that something is going to happen.

its going to be a fun summer for Marlins fans

He did awesome. Me thinks he'll be just fine. :thumbup

it was great to see AJ pitch again i had goosebumps...the mets knew what was coming and they only got 2 runs off him...yes he was a bit wild and fell behing on almost every batter but that will come with time...the more he throws the better he will get...also remember AJ isnt exactly Mr.control he always throws alot of pitches but he'll come around to throwing in the strike zone...

he pitched well for his first start back, his velocity was way up there, and he was really all over the place, though that's understandable after a 13 month layoff

overall i was very impressed

he was really all over the place, though that's understandable after a 13 month layoff

Didn't walk anyone, though. :thumbup

as long as he establishes a 2nd pitch (which I think we will see very soon), he should be very very decent for us. Not worried at all

I had never seen AJ pitched before so I was anxious to see what he has. I have to say that his fastball looks better than Becket's. I think he was a little excited in the first two innings, maybe somewhat nervous and anxious to prove himself (to McKeon?). If the guys would have scored some runs, AJ might have pitched one more inning, he was great after he settled down, but the guys were hitless and they needed pinch hitting, besides not taking chances on him pitching more than 100... I can't wait to see him play here. :thumbup :thumbup Two thumbs up for AJ Great stuff!

On A.J's return: It looked as if he was saving all of his curveballs for the 4th inning- I didn't see many in other innings.

I know it's just one start, but he needs to mix speeds on his fastball better. I kept seeing 94-96 on the gun- like he's trying to throw thru the backstop. Give me some 89, 90, 91.I think he needs to talk to Brad Penny.

Burnett seemed to be all over the strike zone, but that's expected with it being his first start in a year.
