Tejada replaces Giambi in Home Run Derby

July 12, 2004

HOUSTON (AP) -- Baltimore's Miguel Tejada replaced the New York Yankees' Jason Giambi in the American League's Home Run Derby lineup Monday.

Giambi, still recovering from a parasite that weakened him for much of June, will still participate in Tuesday night's All-Star game.

Tejada will be joined in the AL Home Run Derby lineup by Texas' Hank Blalock, Boston's David Ortiz and Baltimore's Rafael Palmeiro on the AL team. The NL batters will be San Francisco's Barry Bonds, the Chicago Cubs' Sammy Sosa, Philadelphia's Jim Thome and Houston's Lance Berkman.

Berkman was picked Sunday to replace Ken Griffey Jr., who tore a hamstring a night earlier.

(Miggy Tejada is my longshot! Jim Thome is my prediction to win!)

Sosa or Tejada, they're the only righy's (well Lance is a switch hitter, not sure which side he'll hit from) and righties crush the ball in this park with the very short left field wall Sammy and Miguel may not be the biggest power hitters in the derby this year, but they've still got power and have the greatest chance of winning since the park heavily favors right handed batters.

Sammy will entertain the fans with his corked bat, but Thome will still win.

I hate Sammy, but I think he's going to win. He's been hitting the ball well as of late, and these contests are made for him.

Sosa will win

He enjoy this event and has the most experience of the bunch. Endurance will play a role. If he goes for the show (500 Feet HR) then he will lose.

I was in Vegas this past weekend, and was thiiiiis close to putting a bet down on Griffey at 5:1. Later that afternoon I heard he got hurt. I'm so very glad I didn't place that bet.

Anyway, I'm taking Palmeiro over Thome in the final.
