January 18, 200521 yr If you guys sign Delgado, will the Marlins then look to dump some salary that they have on the books right now. I live in Chicago (I am a White Sox fan) and I keep hearing a lot of noise up here about the Sox interested in Castillo. Guillen is like his #1 fan. What do you think of this? Is this legit, or will the Marlins keep all of their current players?
January 18, 200521 yr i wouldnt think so.. Encarnacion would be the one we'd be looking to dump (probably along with stokes), i'm guessing.

We don't have anyone to replace him at 2B... unless you've got a major league ready 2B. Do you?

Right now we have Willie Harris, but the Sox don't seem to be set on giving him the job. The Sox have been talking a lot to Iguchi, the FA 2B from Japan, but he wants too much money. I'd love to have Castillo, like the rumors have said, but I didn't know if there was a chance that he could be moved.
January 18, 200521 yr Author I think it was this article that started a lot of buzz in Chicago. http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/sports/10601746.htm

I would rather keep him than trade him, but I am curious about what kind of players we could get in return. You'd get an amazing player in Luis... he's tough, plays hard, works the count, gets on base is a great baserunner, and hits for average.
January 18, 200521 yr unless you grant us power to have the position of Designated Hitter and Frank Thomas and a second baseman who hits 45 HRS with less than 25 strikeouts, then no.

Also, ENC's contact is up after this season as well so it's not like it's backloaded or anything and something we'll be paying for years to come. Somehow I get the feeling that all that extra money won't be put back into the team though.
January 18, 200521 yr Right on Accord, Plus our revenue sharing pot goes up because Montreal goes from being paid to being payed less/paying in depending on what happens.
January 18, 200521 yr Barry Jackson's solo comment regarding Luis Castillo should be an object lesson for all baseball fans on how rumors, in this case one with no source, from an author with no special relationship with either the team, the player or the sport, can take on a life of its own. Right now there are thousands of people all over the mid-west convinced that somehow the White Sox FO is going to go out and get them Louie, all based on an off-handed comment by god-knows-who in the context of god-knows-what.

The most common trade discussed our board is Damaso Marte and Willie Harris for Luis Castillo but knowing our GM he would throw a prospect or two in with them. By the way the Marlins are my second favorite team (I was born in Fort Lauderdale but spent a majority of my childhood in the South Suburbs of Chicago). You have a very nice message board here and I look forward to maybe posting a little more often know that I know they have a site like this.
January 18, 200521 yr thx for stopping in Jeckle. We made lots of White Sox friends here when we took out the Cubs in '03. Good times.

Your generosity is overwhelming. :thumbdown

We like our 1-2 punch of Pierre and Castillo just fine.
January 18, 200521 yr OK. There's been rumors about Conine, and now Castillo, moving ever since the Delgado news broke. There has been winter-long shopping of Encarnacion, and speculation of LoDuca, Beckett and Burnett leaving. Looking at the numbers you could sign Delgado to a backloaded contract (I suspect them to anyway) and keep a $70M payroll, but there's been a lot of rumors. It can't just be a media conspiracy against the Marlins.

The only speculating about Castillo is one off-hand comment by Barry Jackson. I'd like to see one rumor of Conine being traded anywhere. And where are the published reports that Beckett is on the trading block?
January 18, 200521 yr How soon you forget the Red Sox rumors and the Marlins' interest in A.J. Pierzynski. The internal discussions were short, but there was interest and it was reported in the papers. The Palm Beach Post (them or the Herald) said Jeff Conine would be traded if Delgado signed. And was it Beckett for Dunn, or Burnett that was reported by Ken Rosenthal? Pretty sure it was Beckett, because the news took me by surprise with the Burnett rumors out there. I know you don't trust any of the South Florida newspapers or any of their affiliates, so it probably won't matter if I hunt down the articles now or wait until after I visit my nephew. Bye.
January 18, 200521 yr What interest did the Marlins ever show in AJ P? None, zero, zip, nada. LoDuca was and is "their" boy for over a year. How short were the Marlins "internal discussions" on AJ P? Let me replay them for you. "Admin, AJ Pierzynski's agent is on the phone". "Tell him I just left on a junket to Bora Bora....pleeeez".

There was a paragraph or so in the Sentinel( I think) right before he was released
January 19, 200521 yr I wouldn't be opposed to trading Castillo if we could get some good prospects or possibly a starting pitcher. Castillo or Pierre is replaceable. Maybe we could package Encarnacion with Castillo, clear a fair bit of salary, and either trade prospects for Vazquez or make a real multiyear offer to Burnett. If we move Castillo, Lo Duca would be a good number 2 hitter. I would prefer to trade Lo Duca. In fact, I would love it. I think we could greatly improve our team and financial situation, but the front office would never go for that.
