Plan B if Delgado signs with the Rangers, here's the latest on Maggs...

Meanwhile, the Orioles don't expect free-agent outfielder Magglio Ordonez to sign with anybody before February.

Ordonez had his left knee examined on Jan. 6, and he's supposed to start full athletic workouts sometime this week. The Orioles have seen some of his medical records but are waiting until the rest become available.

Ordonez underwent two surgeries last season to repair torn cartilage in the knee, the second one in September in Vienna, Austria, and underwent shock-wave therapy because the knee had been afflicted with bone-marrow edema. His agent, Scott Boras, who wasn't available to comment yesterday, has insisted no other damage was found, but many teams are skeptical.

A source familiar with Ordonez's rehabilitation said one doctor estimated the outfielder's knee will be 75 percent healed by the start of spring training, with no assurances he'll make a full recovery.

The Orioles must determine whether the trauma to the bone occurred in a weight-bearing area. That's why teams are placing greater importance on his medical records than his on-field activities, which could cause the knee to swell the next day without anyone knowing it.

"If it's not in that weight-bearing area, most people feel it will be 100 percent," said a baseball executive. "If it is, it may never be again. We're talking millimeters."

Some Orioles officials had Ordonez rated higher than Carlos Beltran, who signed a seven-year, $119 million deal with the Mets. But the longer it takes for Ordonez to prove his health, the more likely it becomes that he settles for a one-year contract, creatively structured with incentives to provide for a significant bump while also protecting the team that signs him.

Where have you read anything of a 'plan b'? From what I've read, its Delgado or nothing.

Yeah but nobody read of Pudge either.

If there is one thing we know, its that this managment is creative and opportunistic. If all it takes is a 1 yr incentive laden contract, then they need to get it done.

Mags is the better fit. Sends Cabs to 1st, and drop either Enc or more likely Conine to another team. IF teams are as scared as I think they are about his injury, he would be a 1-year contract candidate. Being from Venezuela the Fish would be in prime position to snag him.

rather have maggs than delgado...thats right i said it.

do you have any reasoning on this?

I'm not so sure about sending Miguel to 1st. They should have had him playing some 1st base in Venezuela in the winter leagues if they had plans on moving him there. I feel like learning a third position in three years might hurt Miguel offensively because he'll be concentrating so hard on being adequate there. If we have to move Miguel, let's move him to RF.

I agree with him.

Maggs > Delgado.

Yea, Delgado is the better fit, but Magglio is still an amazing player to add, regaurdless. More amazing, IMO, than Carlos.

BUT: I have to agree with Iowa... He's not plan B. This front office has made it VERY clear it's Delgado or bust, and if it's bust, they think the team is set to compete anyway.

I agree. If we move miggy we should move him to right field. Pretty soon hermida is gonna come up and we can move cabs back to left and put hermida in right. So i think that cabrera has a future in the outfield. He is also getting pretty big so he is gonna lose some of his mobility. I just can't see him as anything but a below-average to average first baseman defensively. I say we bring stokes up late in the year and see if he can be our full-time first baseman in 2006. Assuming we don't sign delgado.

Its Delgado or nothing. Ordonez doesn't fit this team and his agent is Scott Boras. In addition, there is no guarentee that he is healthy.

You need to check your math

Delgado - .282 avg, .392 OBP, .556 SLG, 336 HR

Ordonez - .307 avg, .364 OBP, .525 SLG, 187 HR

thats a difference of 149 HR's, oh, and you are leaving out the biggest advantage of Magglio, he is nearly 2 years younger, comes with less risk in that he would be signing a one year deal most likely, and there is a great chance he could turn into 2005's Benitez, i.e. player coming off a down contract year, signs a one year deal, goes huge then gets a big contract after. Yes we would probably lose him after this year, but Hermida should be ready to take his place by then, and with all the contracts coming off the books we could get a younger 1B or try stokes.

Now, with all that said, I still think I would rather have Delgado, but if we get either I will be ecstatic

Delgado^

in really only 2 years of playing time difference, delgado has 249 more HR's, 335 more RBI's, a slg pct. 31 pts. higher, and an OBP 28 pts. higher, and delgado's a lefty

so i'll say it again

Duh most of us new Delgado has better numbers, thanks for proving it tho...

2 years younger with a banged up knee < two years older perect knee

that was my bad on the math, i was doing it in my head

still, there's only 2 full years of playing difference in there, and there's really nothing to suggest delgado's on the downswing

magglio though, besides being inferior statistically, is also inferior health wise

this is a moot point anyways, because we're goin with delgado or we're staying put. That's certainly the vibe i'm getting.

I don't think Sammy is washed up... he's in decline, sure, but he's not washed up. He had a down and injury plagued season last year, and he still hit over 30 hr. I think he can still put up 30-35 and 90-110. I am more weary of signing Magglio... his knee is in bad shape.

Obviously, i don't know anything about his actual condition....but Magglio could actually be an even bigger bargain than Delgado. Let's keep in mind - Delgado's 2004 season ended with an injury too. The only difference is that Magglio is not supposed to be 100% for the start of the 2005 season. But if that lets us have him at a discount, that would be perfect.
