4. TRAVIS CHICK, rhp Age: 20 B-T: R-R Ht: 6-3 Wt: 220

Drafted: HS--Whitehouse (Texas), 2002 (14th round) Signed by: Dennis Cardoza (Marlins)

Background: The Padres got away with larceny when they acquired Chick from the Marlins for veteran Ismael Valdez in July. After starting the year in the bullpen, Chick found a groove after moving into the rotation at low Class A Greensboro and built upon that success after switching organizations.

Strengths: Chick?s size, aggressiveness, velocity and ability to throw strikes remind some scouts of a young Curt Schilling. He consistently gets ahead in the count with a fastball that sits in the low 90s and touches 94-95. He has a hard slider and an advanced changeup for his age.

Weaknesses: Chick can depend on his fastball too much, and his changeup will improve more quickly if he uses it more often. He overthrows his slider, causing it to lose its horizontal break. He also works too high in the strike zone at times.

The Future: Chick continued to impress in the offseason, as San Diego named him the MVP of its instructional league program. He'll likely begin the year in high Class A and could reach Double-A Mobile by midseason.

of course, he is still in A Ball, but still.

Well, I won't regret that trade until Chick gets to the majors and produces better than Valdez.

Also, it's not likely we would have ended up using Chick in our rotation. With guys like Olsen and Bazardo ahead of him and with much better stuff, he would have been hard pressed to crack our rotation. Maybe we could have used him in a trade for a better player than Valdez, though.

It would be great if the Fish could hold onto all the impressive players they have in the minors from the developmental leagues on up but when a team consituted like the Marlins need to make a trade, sometimes, most times you have to give to get.

In 2003 in the Marlins traded Levinski and Bautista to get Conine, we all know how that worked out. :thumbup . At the time Levinski was considered can't miss and now, god knows if he's still in organized ball. Bautista failed in his attempt to crack into the majors with the Orioles and was traded away. And we've had our share of fair-haired boys who have encountered problems on the way to the bigs, guys like Jason Grilli immediately comes to mind.

As you accurately point out Chick is still at A ball and the Marlins have their fifth starter. I hope the kid does well, but it's going to be a while before the Padres have anything to show while the Fish have a guy now.

Such is life.

Good post though, I enjoyed reading it.

How many teams have traded away monster prospects for guys that can play now? All sorts of great players have been on all sorts of teams. You can't keep everyone.

But, at the time, Valdez >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> than Chick.

I mean, we decided that we were going for it after our trade with the Dodgers, so getting Valdez was an absolute necessity, and at the time, it looked like a better trade than the aforementioned Conine trade in '03, and we all know how that one turned out...

Hey, we traded away Johan Santana about 5 years ago, before anybody knew he was good, but I don't regret it that much.

The Orioles squandered the players they got from us for Jeff Conine. Levinski's still pitching with them, but they traded Bautista for 36 year old reliever Jason Grimsley, who they didn't need at all. HUGE mistake.

But he did fill an immediate need at the time.

And who's to say Chick won't be a bust?

If Chick does make it to the majors it won't take much for him to produce more than Valdez has in recent years.

When he was in the Marlins system, Logan Kensing was a higher rated prospect than him! Potential means nothing until Chick shows that he can get out a major league hitter.

Yeah let's all right off Kensing after he failed when being thrown into a playoff race and asked to win games for us when he hadn't pitched above Single A ball.

What are the chances Olsen makes his debut with the Marlins at some point this season?

I wouldn't expect to see him this year, but I wouldn't be shocked if we did see him up at some point this season.

I can't wait to see him in spring training.
