Al officially into the bullpen

Featured Replies

he has basically become our 5th starter. when there are days off, most teams skip over their 5th guy and go with a four man rotation, and thats precisely what we are doing right now.

He doesn't belong in the pen either. The Marlins should let him go.

Hopefully this means Beinfest is shopping for another starter though.

we dont have the capability to go around cutting $8mil guys

youre gonna pay him one way or another...the question asked is do you let him continue to hurt the team?

I dont like the move into the pen. Our pen is struggling and we are going to put someone who makes it even worser, he cant throw strikes.

I say he is the next Matt Perisho in relief role.

What exactly did he say? Are they just skipping his start, or will they use him in the bullpen?

I'll bet Leiter will start again for the Tampa series.

In theory the Marlins wouldn't need a 5th pitcher again until the end of the month at home against Atlanta. My only concern with a 4 man rotation is whether Moehler's arm will hold up to this. He's pitched well enough to keep this team in games but I would be concerned with the extra wear and tear on his arm. Maybe by putting Leiter in the pen for a few weeks he can work on his mechanics and be better in the second half of the season.

Which do you prefer?

To pay a player $7 million to throw melons to opposing hitters.

To pay a player $7 million to do no further damage.

Just because he is making $7 million that doesn't mean it gives him the right to hurt the team anymore.

How am I clueless?

I agree with you at least. You don't keep someone you don't need just because you already sunk money into the guy. That's just letting him hurt you twice.

On the other hand, I'm not ready to dump Leiter just yet. Right now, the man should be strictly on mop-up duty, and we'll just see how things go from there.

I'm not really comfortable with the 4-man rotation idea. I think the solution is to find someone out there who won't screw us every 5th start...at least until Valdez comes back/

Good to hear this news. It was definately needed. Hopefully he supplies some solid innings out of the pen in the next 2 weeks.

Notes from the game:

Notes

Al Leiter (2-6, 6.75 ERA) is moving to the bullpen for now as the Marlins will temporarily go with four starters with two off days in the next week. Leiter hasn't pitched out of the bullpen since 1993 with Toronto. ... It was the second time this season the Cubs have given up seven runs in an inning. The other came on May 1 at Houston in the fifth inning. ... This was the first meeting of the season for the teams, who built a rivalry when the Marlins won the 2003 NL Championship Series in seven games en route to the World Series title.

Just let him pitch any inning except the 2nd. :p

I really don't think this is a permanent move, it is just being done for 2 weeks because of the way our schedule is set up and the proximity to the All Star Game. However, hopefully the next 3 weeks will give Al some time to go over his mechanics and finally get his location in check. And hopefully we will get to see our 4 other starters win a bunch of important games for us going into the break. GO FISH!
