Marlins may acquire Sheffield from Yanks

Burnett and Encarnacion would go to New York, one source says.

MIAMI GARDENS ? Slugging right fielder Gary Sheffield would return to the Marlins in a proposed deal that would send right-hander A.J. Burnett and right fielder Juan Encarnacion to the New York Yankees, according to a National League source.

An American League source confirmed that the Yankees are interested in Burnett and Encarnacion and have talked to the Marlins about them. But that source also said connecting Sheffield to the discussions "might be premature."

Burnett, who was sought by the Yankees in December, also has attracted interest this week from the Baltimore Orioles.

Burnett is a free agent after the season and is not expected to re-sign. But if the Marlins remain in contention, they might be content to keep Burnett all year and then lose him to free agency, as the team did with Carl Pavano last season, in exchange for a first-round draft pick.

The Marlin probably will have a surplus of starters soon. Right-hander Josh Beckett is expected to be activated from the disabled list today, injured right-hander Ismael Valdez is due back after the All-Star break and rookie left-hander Scott Olsen has been impressive.

Sheffield is a former Marlin (1993-98) who could help address the club's offensive struggles. He is hitting .300 with 13 home runs and 55 RBI.

Sheffield is in the second year of a three-year, $39 million contract. It is unclear how much of that the Marlins would pick up.

Two New York-area newspapers reported that the Yankees approached the New York Mets last weekend about trading Sheffield for Mike Cameron and Miguel Cairo.

Sheffield does not have a no-trade clause in his contract but he has told reporters in New York that he strongly prefers to stay with the Yankees.

thanks but no thanks

give them enc, olsen, and chris aguila or somethin...can't get rid of aj for a bat

I am all for this personally, the Marlins have good starters and with Olsen going to be sitting around in the Bullpen now is the time. Our starting pitching has proven that it can succeed and that we have good depth in the minors. But offense, after going to the game tonight it drove me crazy the oppurtunities that were blown, Sheffield makes things happen, I think his bat Every Day will off set losing a Burnett outing every fifth day. IMO.

wow....lemme think....

injury prone guy and a guy most of us want outta here for a guy who is amazing OF and can really hit the ball and he was a marlin fav!

hmm if they put in a pitcher i say maybe do it.

I don't see how we have extra starting pitching...

Willis, Moehler.

Beckett is a injury risk to rely on being healthy enough

Valdez is nothing, people think he's going to be a huge pickup when he returns, do they forget how frustating his starts were last season?

Olsen has had 1 start, too early to count on him being dependable

Leiter has been shaky to say the least

I don't see how we can withstand the loss of AJ, we only have 2 dependable starters after his departure

Don't get me wrong, I'd like to get Sheff's bat (Cabs, Delgado, Sheff sounds great) but we can't do it at the expense of AJ. I don't care what his contract situation is ignore 2006 and beyond and focus on 2005 -- we're better off with AJ than Sheffield.

this team needs to take chances! we need a bat!

and i think the pitching spot could be filled in.

Very intriguing to hear the Marlins are in the mix for Sheffield. But I don't think you can trade Burnett at this point in the season. Assess where we're at in about 3 weeks, and then make the decision based on our position in the standings and what's available in return.

if it was beckett id to it in 2 seconds.

and i think the pitching spot could be filled in.

By who?

why did it all get deleted?

considering only what he said on New York radio today...

ill pass.

We would have a filthy lineup

Having these great arms does nothing if we're scoring at this pace. We need an impact bat. Sheffield or otherwise. Not a Preson Wilson, or a Admin Bigbie, we need a legit bat.

I say AJ, Enc and a prospect or two for Sheffield, Gordon, Wang, and cash.

Look at our offense though, we could use Sheff's bat equally as much as we need AJ's pitching.

I rather give them Olsen instead of AJ simply because AJ is a proven starter unlike Olsen, but I am willing to give AJ for Sheff as long as we get Wang too.

You have to think long-term to some degree. AJ's a free agent at year's end, odds of signing him are slim. Olsen's got 6 years after this one at low cost. That's why they're even talking about trading AJ. Enc too, is a free agent at year's end.

I agree, besides this is the 2nd year of Sheffield's 3 year contract, perhaps if this deal happens the Yankees will eat enough salary for us to keep him next year, and if not... Gary Sheffield could fetch us some nice names in the offseason via trades.

AJ is gone after this season no matter what, it would be a huge mistake for us to give up Olsen.

I'd do it in a second IF the Yankes pay a lot of his salary this year and next year and Sheffield is willing to come to FL and not cry about being trading.

We could try to make a deal with Pitt for one of Kip Wells, Josh Fogg or Mark Redman to replace AJ if Moehler/Olson/Valdez/Leiter aren't getting it done in the 3/4/5 spots.

The deal is tempting -- but Admin is right that this team can NOT succeed with a rotation of Beckett (assuming hes healthy, which is a big if)- Willis-Moehler-Leiter-Valdez/Olsen

Valdez sucks, Olsen is unproven, and Leiter has been awful. That leaves us three reliable starters, two of which are performing over their heads right now.

That being said, It wouldn't surpise me if Beinfest turned around and made a deal for a pitcher to replace AJ. Maybe a Jennings or Kennedy from Colorado -- maybe even everyone's favorite target Barry Zito could become a real possibility.

You're all talking like this is even gonna happen. I'd love to have him but it's just not gonna happen. :p

I could be horribly wrong though.
