Jerry Layne

Yesterday's home plate umpire, Jerry Layne, is now at third base.

I hate to attack umpires because they have a tough job and usually get it right, but has there been a more obvious sense of malice than what we're seeing from this guy? Yesterday, Marlins2003 reported that he was jawing with the Marlin dugout before the 1st and 2nd innings. Whatever it was about, he hasn't dropped it. First, he refused to ask for help on an obvious foul ball yesterday off Dontrelle's foot, in which he hobbled back to the dugout. Immediately after the rain delay when the Marlins took the field, he was openly jawing with Jack about something. In the bottom of the ninth last night, he rings Damion Easley up on a check swing (where he clearly did not go) without getting an appeal from the first base umpire, who is supposed to determine the call in that situation. Now tonight, the foul ball incident and ejecting Jack maybe two words into the discussion.

Something is up with this guy and he needs to be removed from the crew for tomorrow's game before he can do anymore harm.

I was thinking the same thing Juanky. He seems to have a serious vandetta here, too many "coincidences" with the same ump the last 2 games.

It's a no win situation unfortunately and that is the sad part :confused

I think it's time MLB suspends umpires like they do players and managers. This was a sad turn of events for the game of baseball.Like the NBA,and other Pro sports, the outcome of games are ruled by officiating that have ego problems and want star power. And no one in their respective sports ever does anything about it (Stern,Selig, etc).

The NBA's officiating makes the games unwatchable. I can't stand it anymore.

Certainly appeared that way tonight.

I suspect Layne was miffed that Jack stopped and discussed the play with home plate umpire before going to Layne because by the time Jack got there Layne was fuming. Two, three words and Jack got the heave-ho.

You do have to wonder, as Juanky said, what's going on between this umpire and the Fish?

I have a question for you all who watched the play on tv. I was at the game so I didn't have the benefit of replay and depending on Dave Van Boring (god he makes my ears hurt) for anything other than a belch or two along the way leave unknowing whether the ballwas in fact fair or foul?

I'm sure Rick and Tommy replayed it several times. What was it fair or foul?

I did not have the benefit of tv, but Felo and Yiki said without a doubt that the ball was foul.

I just saw it on BBTN and reading between the lines of the comments that accompanied it, the impression of Kurkjian was that it was indeed foul.

He did point out Layne was the same umpire the Fish had trouble with last night.

The unfortunate part of the call was it totally turned the game into the Cubs favor. Often umps bad calls don't affect the game, but this one really put the game out of reach for the Fish.

Rick and Tommy only played the replay once cause it was way too fast and blurry to tell from their view...so we dont know...

but yeah that ump was a stooge...

the jaw jacking...the Easly checkswing...the line drive...the ejection...and the worst one...the OBVIOUS Willis foul ball (WHAT DID LANE THINK WILLIS WAS DOING WHILE KNEELING ON THE FLOOR HOLDING HIS FOOT?!?!?!)

Thats A LOT from one ump in two games time...um, MLB, Selig, anybody....HELLLLOOOOO!?!?!?! :banghead

Maybe this is repeating the obvious, but.....

When a ball bounces in fair territory before reaching 3B, the judgement by the ump is whether the ball is fair when it reaches 3B, not whether it hits fair after passing 3B. It's kinda like there's an imaginary foul pole extending up from 3B, and if the ball is on the fair side (or even collides with that imaginary pole) right at 3B, it's a fair ball.

Yes, it did hit foul beyond 3B, but in the umps judgement, it was fair as it passed over 3B.

Tough call, and TV did not have a good angle.
