Agon wants to stay

Gonzalez's future: Shortly after the season ends, Alex Gonzalez likely will undergo a procedure to remove a bone chip from his throwing elbow. Gonzalez -- out of the lineup since Sept. 4, aside of a couple of pinch-running appearances -- hopes this isn't his final week wearing a Marlins' uniform.

Eligible for free agency after the season, Gonzalez has a home in Miami and would like to sign a three-year deal with the Marlins.

However, he isn't sure what the club's intentions are. Rookie Robert Andino is a talented, but inexperienced, shortstop whose skills are similar to Gonzalez's.

"I spoke to my agent and told him I want to come back to the team," said Gonzalez, an All-Star as a rookie in 1999. "They don't say [anything]. We'll see what happens after the season. I told my agent, 'I want to be here next year and three more seasons.' But it's business. I have to think about my family, too."

Gonzalez has been impressed with Andino.

"He's good, but you need experience," he said.

A fierce competitor, Gonzalez played through elbow pain for much of the past two seasons. He said that even when he was in the lineup, he was at about 80 percent strength.

"I wish I was in there every day," he said. "I'm not 100 percent, and I don't want to be stupid. I don't want to go out there and make an error, and after that tell [the media that] I made an error because of my elbow. I don't want to have excuses for that."

I'd take him on a 3-year deal. Just depends on the #. Our main priorities in the off-season should be attempting to sign Cabs and Willis to long-term deals, however.

Go long term with Beckett and Willis this year, leave Cabrera for next year, he won't go to arbitration until next year.

Yeah, that sounds fine. Gonzo is entering his prime years and plays a very important position. Save money by starting Vargas (im so impressed with this kid), Hermida in RF, and Willingham in LF, along with possibly Resop and Messenger in the pen. Next season allows for many opportunities for young, cheap, and nearly ready players to take roster spots. And all at a bargain. This, of course, makes it imperative that we spend some money on building an excellent bench as well as stocking AAA with a few guys able to fill-in for injury (killed us this year) and disappointments.

I would love to see him signed to a 3 year contract. Why break up the #1 lonegest lasting double play combo in the majors. May him and Luis play another 500 games for the Marlins.

I'm not saying that your idea won't happen, but if you're going to load the rotation with kids, you have to fill the lineup with veterans. Hermida's fine, I wish we'd get a chance to see more of Willingham these final few days, but Cabrera and Delgado can't be much better next year than they were this year, and at some point they need help.

Id love A-Gon back, but I just think we have better options at shortstop than we do for starting pitching or middle relief. :( I know we can get good pitching for the money he'll be asking. I would love to see A-Gon and Castillo retire in Marlins uniforms as the greatest fielding due of all time. :notworthy
