A state senator in Alabama says Hurricane Katrina was God's punishment on a sinful part of America.

State Sen. Hank Erwin, R-Montevallo, wrote in a weekly column for news outlets: "New Orleans and the Mississippi Gulf Coast have always been known for gambling, sin and wickedness. It is the kind of behavior that ultimately brings the judgment of God."

"Warnings year after year by godly evangelists and preachers went unheeded. So why were we surprised when finally the hand of judgment fell?" Erwin wrote. "Sadly, innocents suffered along with the guilty. Sin always brings suffering to good people as well as the bad."

The New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary was flooded by Katrina. Erwin said the Baptists knew they had put themselves on the front lines ministering in a sinful place that could be targeted.

He said he didn't think the hard-hit residents of the low-income lower 9th Ward in New Orleans were singled out for especially harsh punishment but were merely in the way, as were the shrimpers in Bayou La Batre.

William Willimon, bishop of the North Alabama Conference of the United Methodist Church, said Erwin is "sure no theologian."

"I'm certainly against gambling and its hold on state government in Mississippi, but I expect there is as much sin, of possibly a different order, in Montevallo as on the Gulf Coast. If God punished all of us for our sin, who could stand?" Willimon said.

A member of Shades Mountain Independent Church, Erwin said, "As harsh as it may sound, those hurricanes do say that God is real, and we have to realize sin has consequences."

Erwin isn't alone with that view. In Birmingham, Samford University professor of divinity Fisher Humphreys said Christians do believe God cares about sin. As to God's control of events, different believers answer the question differently, Humphreys said.

It is obvious that as terrible as the storm was good has flowed from it, Humphreys said. "Look at the outpouring of compassion," he said.

I'm not posting this to egg you religious folks out there, because I think he's at an extreme end of the spectrum, but this kind of stuff really irks me and I really wonder at how many people there are around the country that agree with him.

*sigh*

Interesting...the lower 9th ward is one of the poorest parts of the city. So Jesus really hates the poor? I guess the meek won't inherit the earth. Plus I've always known Mississippi and Alabama would be punished for being the Bible belt. I guess they weren't God fearing enough. Nothing like pure fear to keep people in check.

So what did Florida do last year?

That's just gold.

The radical nutjobs give most Christians a bad name...

It's Alabama, you'd expect someone in the state to say something like that and then go to hootananny.

Peter Griffin - "Why did the dinosaurs die?"

Museum Giude - "Because you touch yourself at night!"

according to him they were just "in the way" unfortunately. :plain

I jokingly said "first God wipes out spring-break, now Mardi-Gras...what's next?"

I never thought someone would actually say it seriously.

Someone needs to tell him drunken revelry and anonymous sex is why some of us are here.

Besides there's other ways for God to tell us we're "bad" without resorting to murder (going against his own commandment; hypocrite!).

If God really dealt out judgment like that, I daresay that it would be felt in more than just New Orleans. Try the whole country and for that matter, the world.

Good Lord some people just don't use their heads.

well he did flood the earth and killed everyone....except for noah, his family, a few other people i think and his ark full of animals :mischief

It's in the bible, IT MUST BE TRUE! All those animals, getting along. The flood. That whole bit. Man, you know, that one story is one of the MANY that sticks out in my mind as entering the realm of "fairy tale." No rational, logical human being could come across that outside the bible and say they think that it would plausibly happen.

Someone had to say it. We knew some prick would come out and blame it on all the sin in the area. I'm shoked it took this long.

Have you ever considered that a lot of stories in the Bible are just stories? OMG NO BECAUSE IF I CLAIM IT ALL HAS TO BE TRUE I PROVE THAT I'M TOO INTELLECTUAL TO BELIEVE IN GOD.

It actually didn't take much longer than a day. Check the history in the bullpen for hate groups and Katrina. :plain

One again you assume atheism.

So some are stories and some are true? Yes, it offends my inellect to ever believe a man can die and rise again a few days later. It offends me that "all of history" is supposed to be contained in a couple pages of "begats." It offends me that dinosaurs are in the bible, yeah right, and called stupid names like Leviathon, etc. Gimme a break.

But these are my personal opinions. Just because I don't believe in that, you're free to. Who cares? Forgive me, Jesus would.

Again you post this. Redundancy. Hypocrisy.

Why dont you get over your own personal crusade to give people crap on their faith? Ive accepted the fact that you are an a**hole, why dont you accept the fact that people have strong ties in their faith and will believe what they believe to be true and dont give a rats ass about your anti-bible remarks everytime faith or God is brought up.

Why dont you make a thread, outline why you think the Bible is ridiculous, and get a mod to pin it. It would save us all alot of time not having to re-read your sentiments or to sift through your crap.

I do not assume atheism, but am I wrong to assume you don't believe the Bible?

As far as your second paragraph, there are things that concern intellect and some that concern faith. Your biggest theological error is forgetting that man has the capacity for faith and are not solely intellectual beings.

I'm not judging you - judgment does not belong to me. I do however don't feel like I don't have to right to debate. Nobody is too pious to do that.

What a baby. Wanna' cry some more? WAAAAAAAAAAAH!

Good idea, though. I'll go with no.

LOL at the original story of the thread.

Not all believers in God believe in the Bible in a literal sense you know. Those that do have no idea what they're talking about. The stories in the Bible are written to get points across to the people of the time it was written (LESSONS) and are not to be taken literally.

It is supposed to show you how to lead your life, but it's not to be read as a science book, more like a collection of tales with morals to the story.

The thought of hurricanes being part of God's wrath and the face that new orelans was destroyed does tie in perfectly with the story of sodom and gommorah. Its not surprising that this was mentioned. It isnt even overly radical. I mean i dont agree with this kind of stuff, but it isnt strange to find someone who does. Should a US public official say it? I dont think so, its really not his job. But truth is that as ridiculous at it seems to us, whats more interesting is to see how many people in that region will actually believe this.

Furthermore, all religions are a matter of faith, resurrecting after 3 days, reincarnation etc. Its all a matter of faith theres no point using 'facts' to argue matters of faith. It's not like anyone who believes a certain way religiously will stop doing so b/c someone else says so. People who dont believe in evolution CANNOT be convinced to believe in it through science b/c in the end faith trumps science. I believed before this season that the marlins were going to win the world series, and no matter what anyone else told me about the cardinals lineup or the braves division titles could convince me otherwise. Matters of faith
