Beckett and Lowell traded to Red Sox

Featured Replies

is it true that the Dodgers was better than Red Sox deal? but again money stood in the way? I doubt it it probable had to do with the Dodgers being a NL team

Yea it was they were offering Guzman, Billingsley, Broxton, and Orenduff

Would the Dodgers consume Lowell's contract though? I doubt it.

Why are most of the people on this board so happy about this trade anyways? I wasn't a big fan of Beckett, granted. I always thought the guy was overrated. Lowell just had a bad year, but his salary made him expendable. If we had traded both to the Rangers for Blalock and one of their two pitching prospects, I would have thought it was a trade that made sense: getting rid of an injury-prone pitcher and a fading 3B and getting a lefty power bat makes sense.

Now... trading both to the Red Sox for a pair of stupid prospects? I don't care who they are, prospects are prospects. That only sends a message to what remains of the fan base: guess what, we don't care if you don't show up at the games anymore, we are just having another firesale. How many more fire sales are we going to have? This might be the first step into moving to another city.

I see a lot of people here being extremely happy about these trades. Like always, the emphasis on the dramatic is taking away from the reality of the moment. And the reality is this: your team is dying again and this time it might not make it. I don't know how many of these people actually went trough the ordeal of 1998, but it wasn't funny.

Have a little more respect. This is going to hurt. When your team losses 100 and more games two years in a row you are not going to have any fun. You probably were too young to remember (I am talking about those who actually were too young in 1997, no offense), but there is no fun watching your team converted into the travesty of baseball. And that's what we are going to become if we keep this direction. And, guess what, Dontrelle will have a subpar year in 2006 like Livan did in 1998 when Leyland sent him out there for 9 or 20 innings (as long as it took). The new manager will have to keep him longer into the games because he is the only proven pitcher out there. God forbids he gets hurt. Cabrera will keep hitting HRs until he reaches free agency, then it is bye-bye to sign with the Yankees. We will be the mockery of baseball for the next 6 years and then surprise the world again.

And then what? The same all over again? I have a lot of respect for the people in this forum that have said that if there is another firesale they wouldn't go back to the stadium. If these people went through 1998, believe me, they know what they are talking about!

I hate this deal.

Pending the next move, be it fire-sale or creative retooling, I will re-evaluate my stance, but on it's own, this is just the Marlins compromising, which is something they said they wouldn't do.

So the tentative starting lineup is now Castillo, Hermida, Cabrera, Delgado, Lo Duca, LF-??(hopefully not Willingham), Pierre, and Ramirez?

The team has already said Willy is starting so deal with it.

That's all I;m going to say about this subject. Because apparently you have sh*t for brains and try to bring this up in every thread to start a useless argument that has ended with you looking like an ass that holds a grudge.

That wasn't my point, my point was that money was freed up to hopefully keep at least Delgado. And where was it said Willingham would start? Wasn't it said he'd have to earn it in ST? Well, even if he does win the job dont whine when he is completely horrible.

Willingham starts if Delgado is traded.

Thank you. If somehow, someway, they find a way of keeping what's left of the team intact and add creatively to the sum of all parts, then it will be allright. But I am afraid to say that it is not looking like they are going in that direction. Sad but true...

If Delgado goes to the Mets, Milledge will start in LF and not Willingham. And that makes me happy.

who says we are getting Milledge in return for Delgado? And enough of this anti-Willingham. We get it.

Because he would be the key to the deal. No Milledge=no Delgado IMO. Trade Pierre for Murton or Pie and I'll be really happy.

dang, this sucks.... I'm really concerned for Willis now, because of the enormous pressure of carrying the rotation. While I have no doubt he can do it, its really hard to see the rotation without Beckett and still seeing this team being competative.

But whats done is done and even though I jumped on the Marlins bandwagon in 03', I'm not jumping off. This is my team and I'll ride the rollercoaster with them.

Thank you Josh and Mike for the brief memories you gave me as a Marlins fan. Now go out and win your 20 games Josh and show everyone that was a fluke season Mike.

their rumored deal centers on Pettit not Milledge. Which I really dont like. I dont think he has what it takes to be a dominate number 1 starter. As for willingham, dude I dont want him starting either. But, enough please? Let it go. He will be the utility man of the future I think, which is a good thing.

I really wanna see what comes next too. But, over all I dont like the deal so far honestly. I wanted lester or Papelborn much more. I dont like that sanchez had TJ before, and I think he was hyped as they wanted to trade him before.

Lastings Milledge would and should start in CF, not LF.

But that's assuming we got him and I will not assume that.

For the love of god, Milledge is a center fielder! Stop with the corners nonsense.

um silly, Aguila would be in CF

:whistle

So we went from having starting pitching as a strength to a weakness. We also have a bunch of unproven players who if they turn out to be good will just be traded in a few years anyway. Remind me of why this is a good thing? And what happened to that money we were paying Hampton? Wasn't that supposed to help offset the cost of keeping Delgado?

No, we backloaded Delgado's contract so that he would make 10 mil more (roughly?) this year--which is what we paid Hampton/Pudge...whoever the f*ck else we backloaded...last year

It balanced out.

That was Folklegend's point.....

And we backloaded his contract so if the stadium didn't appear, we could trade him.

which was kinda genius actually... essentially signing Carlos Delgado to a one year deal worth 4 mill.

I just got home from a 12 hour airport ordeal, and heard about the trade on the radio on the plane (thankfully they had XM), so I guess I'll give my thoughts since everyone else is doing the same.

I hate hate hate trading Josh Beckett, but if Beinfest absolutely had to do it in order to dump Lowell, this was a heck of a deal to make. Much better than the Rangers deal. I'm pumped to see HanRam play down here, and getting Lowell's contract off the books is huge.

I also agree with others who say that if you're gonna rebuild on the fly, might as well dump Delgado, Duca, Pierre, and even Castillo too, if you can get a great return in the market. It'd be possible to dump those guys and still field a team that can finish around .500 next year (provided some shrewd cheap FA's sign here) and go into 2007 as a pretty serious team.

Still, it's sad to see Josh go, especially to the f****** Sox. The picture of him with a Sox hat on almost made me puke. Hopefully Josh gets a start against the Marlins when they come down here next year - if I get a chance to go to the game, I'll be sure to give him a standing ovation. Hell, I'd even root for the Sox in the playoffs in games he starts (but at no other time). Maybe Lowell can refind his power stroke in Fenway, too.

Good luck to both Josh and Mike.

Big ups to Beinfest for this trade, considering the unfortunate situation of slashing payroll he's been put in by ownership.

I read somewhere that the PTBNL is 21 year old relief prospect Jesus Delgado - who I know absolutely nothing about. I heard it from a Red Sox fan, so I'm guessing the source is somewhere out of RSN - most likely SOSH - although that's just speculation on my part.

Who was recently added to the 40-man roster (to spare him from the Rule V draft) and thus ineligible to be a Player To Be Named Later. Now, a player to be released to the press later or after finalizing the trade, yes.

I thought the only thing that prevented a player from being the PTBNL was that they couldn't have played in that league, meaning that if it's a National League team he's being traded to, he couldn't have ever played in the Majors for a NL team
