Could this team compete next year or the year after?

Featured Replies

IYO do you think the Marlins can compete next year or the year after for the WC or Divison? Just say JJ, Willis, Nolasco and Olsen continue what they are doing. Kensing, K-Mart, Tank, Messy continue having good appearances out of the bullpen etc:.

At the beginning of this year this team looked terrible, I mean terrible. Maybe all that losing could have just been a "jelling" time. Learning lessons, getting to know what being a ML baseball player is all about. And out of nowhere this team started to win, could this winning be the "real 2006 Marlins" or could it just be a hot streak?

Could we do it?

I certainly think that within two years this could be a very competitive team. The players in your words are jelling and Girardi has finally got a bullpen that works. The big question is in two years will D-Train and Miguel still be here? Right now this team has a strong nucleus to be a very good team for years to come.

I think this team can compete in 2 years. They just need to keep Cabrera and Willis and and pick up a CF. If this team keeps developing like it is maybe next year the may be above .500.

I think catcher isnt as big of a need as many say, not all great teams have elite catchers. I would like to see us swipe 2-3 more bullpen arms and a quality centerfielder.

We certainly need an upgrade over Abercrombie. Fortunately that won't be very hard. Moehler needs to be replaced with one of our younger guys, (Petit, Anibal, Ungs, etc.) which we should have done from the beginning. Since we started over, I would have preferred it to be complete rather than everyone but Moehler and Willis in the rotation.

I have no idea who we would get to play catcher. Our best bet would be to trade a pitching prospect to another team for an up-and-coming catching prospect (Saltalamacchia, Ryan Garko, Montero, George Kottaras, or Kurt Suzuki are all good options). Our lack of hitting prospects has been hitting us in both the CF and C positions hard this year. Fortunately Olivo has been a pretty good pickup, considering his past numbers.

Yes, yes they can compete next year. Certainly the year has to pan out, but right now, catcher does not seem a problem. Olivo is up to .277 and has a cannon arm.

I think the lineup is good enough to overcome one shortfall be it CF or C - but not both. When we have three holes (Hermida down) the offensive is much, much worse.

Keep everyone healthy, continue development of our young players, find a solid CF or C and we should be in good shape for the future.

Olivo behind the plate doesn't hurt us...as you may see our pitching staff has pitched well with him calling the pitches. He can throw well and is hitting very well. If it ain't broke don't fix it!

The rotation and pen should look pretty good by year's end. The line up will be a C and a CF short (or 2 OF and put Willy behind the plate)

Next year.. All these guys need is a season under their belt.. they're that talented.

If they didn't get off to such a terrible start, I'd even say there's enough time to salvage this season, but with Hanley's injury and the likely September wall for all the young arms, next year may be good but 2008 is without question ours.

It's nice to see us winning a few more than losing lately....but it's not unexpected. I've said here many times that I expected the team to do it's best in May-July...before collapsing in August-September. We just don't have the pitching, and when these young pitchers hit the 120 inning mark..watch out, it's gonna get ugly. We can finish this year hopefully at .400. We can finish next year, if the same pieces are here, at .450. If the same pieces are here we can be playoff competitive in 2008, assuming all goes as well as it can with what we have and everybody stays healthy, especially the pitchers. I don't expect the FO to spend any money in 2006, 2007, or 2008...on any missing pieces.

I don't doubt (at this current pace) that the team will seriously compete in two years. Unfortunately, you have to factor in the inevitable regressions some players experience. A great year by Uggla, could translate into an awful sophomore season - you just don't know in baseball. In the meantime, I say we acquire young talent, whether or not that means trading Willis. In the end, we just won't know until we get there. Many expected us to win last year; yet, Mike Lowell had a disastrous year. In the mean time, we should just enjoy this team's energy, because they're definitely a lot more fun to watch than last year's overrated, lazy team.

i don't think so..i think we'll improve a lot and will finish with a much better record than ESPN predicts us to. but the mets are still in our division and they frankly have to much for us to compete with at the time, until we fill in some gaps with free agents.....

The Mets are also very old, 3 of their 4 best players (Pedro, Delgado, Glavine) are on the wrong side of 30, and they've also got a lot of backloaded contracts meaning that there will be less money to go around, especially with Wright and Reyes coming due for arbitration.

On top of that the Mets will be paying Beltran until the year 2018. :o

I think by 2008 they'll have the highest paid closer, first-baseman and centerfielder, none of whom, arguably, will be franchise players at that point.
