June 12, 200620 yr guys if u look at the fielding, they both have 4 errors. If u look at hitting olivo has 2 more rbi and two more home runs while Lo Duca is batting .287 and Olivo at .277. very very similar not including olivos great great arm!!!
June 12, 200620 yr *Waits for Spike's "But sabermetrics say Olivo sucks defensively so I will follow that no matter what"*
June 12, 200620 yr While their on field statistics are very similar, Lo Duca brings to the table all the intangibles which Olivo can't even be comprehend. But Paulie had the "intangibles" haha, beat me to it.
June 12, 200620 yr And Olivo is completely horrible at blocking balls. Hes a journeyman and a backup calibre catcher. As I've said, when it comes time for us to compete, we'll need a good catcher. Olivo is not.
June 12, 200620 yr could Olivo be our Juan Enc this year? You know, the marlins always have 1 player you love to hate for south florida. Heck all sports teams do, except the panthers perhaps (correct me if I am wrong there). Heats = Walker Dolphins = Moore/Fletcher Marlins = Enc, now Olvio? Honestly, I dont think he is "that bad" of a catcher. He isnt great but he is around league average and our staff has pitched better and better as they worked together longer and longer
June 12, 200620 yr I don't get why we have to have this discussion. Lo Duca was a good leader. But he never really played up to the task. Olivo is filling in quite fine as a stopgap.

June 12, 200620 yr i've never heard of anyone complaining about a catcher hitting .277 Seriously And he also has one of the best arms in the league.
June 12, 200620 yr Olivo has essentially won me over, he just needs to work on blocking, that's about it. I loved Paul with all my heart, he was my favorite player, but that doesn't take away the job Olivo is doing.
June 12, 200620 yr Yea, Olivo has won me over as well and I'll gladly have him on this team next year. :thumbup

But Paulie had the "intangibles" haha, beat me to it. I'm thinking roundingthird was being sarcastic about "intangibles". They don't mean a damn thing and give examples of why Lo Duca has more intangibles than Olivo ?

They don't mean a damn thing and give examples of why Lo Duca has more intangibles than Olivo ? I agree. Most of the time when announcers use the "intangible" card they use it on players they are friends with. Perfect example is Treanor and Olivo. Olsen has a good game and they shower Treanor with compliments about his game calling and pitcher handling but Johnson has a good game and they don't say squat about Olivo's game calling and pitcher handling. Most of the time when someone uses the intangible card that person is talking nonsense. With all that said, although Lo Duca is overrated I would much rather have him than Olivo if $$$ is not a factor. Olivo is a backup having a good year at the plate.

I'm far from the biggest Treanor fan but he has done a fantastic job handling out pitchers and overall defensively this year. I just wish we could DH for him.

June 12, 200620 yr I agree Treanor is having a fine defensive year but I have no opinion on who does a better job handling the pitchers between Treanor and Olivo.
June 12, 200620 yr *Waits for Spike's "But sabermetrics say Olivo sucks defensively so I will follow that no matter what"* he doesnt know anything about sabermetrics, so don't let him sully their name. Besides, most people who like to follow sabermetrics realize it's not the Bible and just another way to analyze baseball.
June 12, 200620 yr Olivo seems to be improving consistently and Joe says he is a very hard worker. I am comfortable with Olivo and look to him continuing to improve. As far as intangibles, well, the Florida Legislature repealed the intangible tax starting next year, so stop worrying about intangibles. Sure Lo Duca was intense, and this type of topic makes it look like if you like the replacement you are bashing the prior guy, but things offset and 6 hr's by Paul and an average arm offsets those intangibles. Also, his experience didn't do much for Burnett, Mecir, Villone etc and the rest of the pathetic bullpen (except Jonesy). But I like Paul but he is not the difference maker at catcher.
June 12, 200620 yr im very happy with Olivo and under the continued work Girardi has done with him, im willing to bet we havent seen the best from him yet...
June 12, 200620 yr In about 50 fewer AB's Olivo has a lower OBP (.312 vs .329) and a higher SLG% (.452 vs. .396) than LoDuca. Olivo has two more RBI and two more HRs. I'm not going to go as far as saying Olivo is a better player than Paul, but he's definetly giving the Marlins more for their money than LoDuca is giving the Mets. If the Marlins upgrade their OF situation I would have absolutely no problem going with the current Olivo/Treanor tandem next season.
June 12, 200620 yr All I know is that Olivo is about 100000000000000000000000000000000X better at stopping the running game than Paul "bounce it to second" LoDuca, and anyone who says that Paul brought intangiables to the team needs to check how many post-seasons were made in his career, the past two with very talented Florida clubs. For all the hate, Olivo's a great defensive catcher (he stops the running, that's really all that matters) and even the best teams have suspect batters in the 8-hole.
