Miami Is America's Dumbest City

Featured Replies

Miami recently earned the title of the worst city for road rage, and now we?ve received another dubious distinction, we have been rated the ?dumbest? big city in America.

According to Bizjournals.com, Miami has the lowest brainpower rating of any large community in the country. Two-thirds of its adults never went to college. Nearly half, 47%, didn't even graduate from high school.

Following in Miami?s footsteps are Cleveland, Detroit, Philadelphia and Baltimore as the cities with the lowest concentration of brainpower.

Two California communities -- Santa Ana and East Los Angeles -- have the worst scores among medium and small places, respectively.

So which city has the highest concentration of brainpower and therefore can claim to be America?s smartest big city?

The answer is Seattle. 47 percent of Seattle?s adults hold bachelor's degrees, the strongest proportion of college-educated residents in any big city. It's nearly double the U.S. average of 24.4 percent. Just 16 percent of Miami's adults have earned bachelor's degrees which is 31 percentage points behind Seattle?s rate.

San Francisco and Austin are the runners-up in the Bizjournals.com study, which ranks the relative brainpower of fifty-three large communities.

Rounding out the top ten large cities are Colorado Springs, Minneapolis, Charlotte, San Diego, Washington, Portland, Ore., and Albuquerque.

Arlington, Va., is the brainpower leader among medium-sized places. Sixty percent of its adults have bachelor's degrees, two and a half times the national average.

Topping the rankings of small communities is Ann Arbor, Mich., the home of the University of Michigan.

Bizjournals.com analyzed the educational levels of adults in nearly 16,000 cities, towns, villages, boroughs and unincorporated areas. Communities were ranked in three population categories, based on a formula that rewards places with heavy concentrations of college graduates. The rankings reflect each community's collective brainpower, which is tied to its residents' abilities to innovate, create, compete and make money.

Not shocked. Less shocked we won for road rage.

Miami's racking up the positives!

They are basing this off of a college degree? Whatever. My dad doesnt have a college degree and he has done very well for himself. My brother makes over 100k a year and he doesnt hold a college degree, although I would agree my brother is brain dead in certain aspects of his life. My uncle is a multi millionaire many times over and he never went to college. College isnt for everyone. To say a whole city is "dumb" cause a large portion of the population doesnt hold a college degree is ludacris.

Dumb is the wrong word to use for this study - had they said Miami is the least educated (or a similar synonym) it would make a lot more sense.

Just because someone isn't educated doesn't mean they are dumb and/or lack brainpower

It's based on high school and college graduation. It's more of a measure of the education system. Don't go calling Miami the dumbest city in Miami, because there are pleny of other dumb areas in the country.

Miami? Dumb? Nah.

Well, we do have a high immigrant population here, and I'm pretty sure a lot of them are not well educated.

Since when is how much money you make a reflection of how smart you are?

Coral Springs has got to be one of them :lol :lol :lol :lol :lol :thumbup

some fool cut me off a few weeks back and then had the nerve to yell at me telling me he didnt appreciate me cutting him off.

that says a lot about miami's intelligence and driving. :plain

Yeah well, this is referring to the City of Miami, not Miami-Dade County. In Miami-Dade, you have cities and mayors for every two miles. City of Coral Gables, Pinecrest, South Miami, etc. What does the City of Miami encompass? Little Havana, Liberty City, etc. Not necessarily the highest areas of opportunity and education...

So Miami is probably the dumbest city in Miami, but I make plenty mistakes while typing so bleh. And we all know that calling of Coral Springs one of the dumbest areas of the country is a travesty. (Except Coral Springs High, which sucks)

Anyways, I know of places where half the kids drop of high school to go take meth and do nothing with their lives. I don't think Miami's problem is really as bad.

Well when it's all said and done $ is what counts.

Some of the most brilliant people in the world are college professors or even grade school teachers. Not a ton of money coming to them.

Well, we do have a high immigrant population here, and I'm pretty sure a lot of them are not well educated.

Very good point. The survey doesn't include the greater miami area.

Well, we do have a high immigrant population here, and I'm pretty sure a lot of them are not well educated.

Bingo. How many people came here too old to attend school, and had to immediately find a way to provide for themselves?

Also, education level is a reflection of socio-economic status, not intelligence nor capacity to learn. I'm sure if you examine the study and look for correlations between education level and income level, you'll find that a majority of the "dumb" cities are also quite poor.

What a pretentious article.
