August 7, 200620 yr Maybe they got the new stadium and were going to name it after me but forgot my name so they had to cancel the news conference? Joe better not quit that would suck.
August 7, 200620 yr Any fight between Loria and Joe, imo, stems back to the Hanley bunt incident last week
August 7, 200620 yr Any fight between Loria and Joe, imo, stems back to the Hanley bunt incident last week Even though I agree with you that it was a completely bone-headed move, this can't be the reason. I never heard of Loria questioning the decisions of any other manager. I think this stuff is being overblown by the media.
August 7, 200620 yr guys i dont think that it got that bad. loria just wants the team to win and jow didnt want the already pissed umps to get any worse. idk wat was up with the new conference thing but it is a situation i hope clears up.
August 7, 200620 yr Author after the season we have had, girardi could start matt herges tomorrow and bat abercrombie cleanup and loria still shouldnt say anything to him. it's great that he cares about the team, but get a hold of yourself. we don't need a super-fan as owner who gets involved in team decisions ala dan snyder. hopefully it's all over with....
August 7, 200620 yr Loria's actions this past winter show that winning isn't all he cares about. He should just watch himself and stay out of the team's way.
August 7, 200620 yr Another thing to consider is that, in another thread, someone said Wes Helms was not in the clubhouse for the post-game meeting... Would there be a press conference for a Wes Helms trade??
August 7, 200620 yr This reminds me of the Billy the Marlin saga and the media pouncing on it to launch a thermonuclear attack on the franchise when, after being sued, the Fish decided to change the guy in the costume and the press had a field day. You would have thought they had just fired an iconic all-star ballplayer like Hank Aaron instead a guy in a fish suit. I heard Sid today. What a freakin' jerk. "This might have happened", "that might have happened", "maybe it was this, maybe it was that...", and gratutiously taking calls from guys telling him what a great reporter he was. bulls***. Now it's Boog. It's trash the Marlins day and people who generally could care less about the Fish, Boog being a Phillies fan and Sid obviously a Mets fan who is still feeling the pain of last week, are just teeing off like it was a driving range. This too will pass. I'm sure for Mike Berardino, he's having a fine day, sitting back and enjoying every minute of what his poison pen has wrought.

It really stinks that we have to listen to Met/Philly/Yanks fans on the radio in FLORIDA. I know when I go up to Cleveland every year my aunt listens to sports talk in the car. Seriously there is not 1 minute that goes by they are not talking about the Indians. She even says there are 2 stations she listens to. One that is more positive and one is more negative. I would kill for a station that just talks Marlins baseball all day long. I wouldnt even change the station. Hopefully a Marlin fan will be hired in the near future.

Its hard to compare a traditional baseball city like Cleveland which has generations of fans to the Marlins which has basically a generation of fans, more or less.

Yep, but it would be nice to turn on the radio and hear talk about the Marlins not how great the Mets are.
August 7, 200620 yr just frustration with how the past games have been going, but that whole Giradi situation worries me lol, really dont want him to leave.
August 7, 200620 yr I continue to believe the problem is with the media (and soon no doubt will come the post bashing me as anti-media, having a hidden agenda, etc.) and not necessarily with the fan base. There is not one sports personality on radio or tv, nor writer for any of the three daily newspapers who can be considered an unabashed Marlins fan, over all other teams or sports (and please no Warren Cromartie comments either...grrr). Were there one show a day available to listeners in the tri-county area that everyday focused on the Marlins, within weeks you would have hundreds of people actively participating and thousands if not tens of thousands listening weekly. So long as there is no media hangout for local baseball, days like this will continue. I hope that when the Marlins ultimately secure a new stadium they look to either partner with an existing radio station, or front the purchase of one that puts baseball first so that we're not forced to listen to (yeah, yeah I know I don't have to listen) a Hank Goldberg spewing his madness, a Mike Berardino his poison, or simply football jocks like Rose, Mad Dog, Mandich, etc., who have neither the love or knowledge of the game to conduct a fun, involved talk show focusing on America's pastime.
August 7, 200620 yr Not bashing you 2003, but for 2 years now you have taken every opportunity to bash the media. It seems like it's a concern of yours that goes beyond not having a true unabashed fan. On that point I'd offer WQAM's Ed Kaplan as an unabashed fan. But he's a realist too. I share your disdain for fat Hank, Rose, Mad Dog. But I personally have no problem with Boog. And the writers.....besides being just bad writers,.....well, I just don't understand your position. I disagree that they go out of their way to push the negative and slough off the positive. Maybe it's a case where 2 people can read the same thing and interpret it two different ways.

And I'm not bashing you either MVP, but were you to listen, for example WEEI in Boston, or as someone else commented about a relative in Cleveland,, you would hear people talking everyday (and I mean everyday, 365 days a year) passionately about baseball. And I stand by my belief that the absense of that in South Florida is the root of many problems he Marlins have. As for Boog, if he has said it once, he's said it a hundred times, he's a Phillies fan. Do I listen to him? Yes. Do I respect him? Yes, certainly. But at the same time he doesn't bleed teal. You see my criticisms as malicious or driven by some kind of vendetta, I can promise you it isn't. It is merely a reaction to growing up with real reporters and commentators who took pride in their work and in their home town team, whichever it was, regardless of where they stood in the standings. When I look into the press box at the DS after a big rally or some terrific happening on the field and I see a bunch of guys who look like civil servants waiting for the clock to strike five, it becomes obvious after awhile they do their jobs without any appreciation or passion for what they are doing or the people they are writing for or reporting to. Like you said though, perhaps it's just you and I reading a story and getting two differing opinions from it. I will say this though. At the time that Loria brought in McKeon, Berardino and I were emailing back and forth several times a week about a myriad of things. He believed up to the second he found out second-hand about it that he was the best friend the Marlins had in town, And to a great degree he was, and justified in feeling betrayed. But the fury and anger he displayed the night of and in the days after it all went down has not disipated over time. I don't think he's ever going to get over it regardless of how many told him it might be the right thing to do professionally. I suspect he's reveling in seeing his allegations and unsubstantiated comments used the way they have now. There's always a backstory and the fact that I was partially privy to some of it back in '03 gives me some insight that I try to share. I don't know what the right answer is but I do know that Berardino's column today was gutter journalism at its worst and nothing more.
August 7, 200620 yr So anyone wanna change their answer about if Girardi is offered the Cubs job he will leave? Doesn't sound good at all. Hopefully it was just frustrations boiling over and everything is better now. it still comes down to team going nowhere vs a potential young, extremely talented playoff team in miami...joe isnt going anywhere if he is as serious about winning as he says he is
August 7, 200620 yr just frustration with how the past games have been going, but that whole Giradi situation worries me lol, really dont want him to leave. Like you said, it's frustration. He's not going anywhere.
August 7, 200620 yr What players weren't able to explain was why team officials, in the first hour after Sunday's game, began preparing the Dolphin Stadium interview room for a news conference. But the mystery news conference never happened, and team officials refused to explain why Marlins logos and microphones had been set up. When the Marlins have used the interview room in the past, it has been for a major announcement. http://www.palmbeachpost.com/marlins/conte...rlins_0807.html :mischief2 Maybe, they were gonna ask if anyone had any supplies for Wes Helms' surprise pary??? But in all seriousness, I doubt a trade was made, I hope its good news about the stadium.
August 7, 200620 yr To be honest, I don't wanna hear someone talk and analyze the Marlins who is a die-hard Marlin fan. As a tremendous Steeler fan, I hear and read a slew of inane homer analysis coming out of Pittsburgh coming from retarded homer writers and radio hosts. I don't want that for the Marlins. Also, Boog, I don't think should be lumped in with the rest of the media down here, he is nowhere near as poisonous as the print guys and is probably the biggest Marlin fan in any media circle. Also, like most people in the media he grew up liking another team, BFD, obviously he couldn't grow up with the Marlins.

I probably could have chosen my words better, and I guess what I should have said was "...that are passionate about baseball".
August 7, 200620 yr I agree about Berardino so I understand what you're saying. However, something went on and it's not just coming from Berardino. There may be a lot of speculation and crap-stirring on his part but there is some truth in that there was friction between Loria and Girardi. And the room was not being prepared for a trade announcement though I have no clue what that was about.

I don't know what the right answer is but I do know that Berardino's column today was gutter journalism at its worst and nothing more. Your backstory on Berardino is insightful, and if it does influence his "writing" that's not professional. You grew up with Great Boston writers. Me with Red Smith. Somehow I can't picture him jumping around in the press box, or even cracking a smile, yet he was passionate about lots of sports, including baseball. And no one can dispute that he was a great writer. We have here in South Florida a collection of awful to bad writers. I would say that if they are passionate about baseball it doesn't come through in their writings. I just have a problem with the thought that they're maliciously out to get the Marlins. Boog is boog. We agree on him. Eddie Kaplan is really a greatly passionate baseball fan, and his favorite team is the Marlins(and he hates the Yankees). The thing that irks me the most about the media coverage in this town is the 365 day a year coverage of the Dolphins. Some of the media will occassionally have something to say about the Marlins(sometimes positive), but in my heart I truly believe that the only time they really care or think about the Marlins is from now till season's end.....and that's only because of the fact that the Marlins share the stadium with the beloved Dolphins. And what effect the infield dirt will have on the football game.
August 8, 200620 yr after the season we have had, girardi could start matt herges tomorrow and bat abercrombie cleanup and loria still shouldnt say anything to him. Nah, if he does that I have only 2 words: Baker act!
August 8, 200620 yr Kaplan is very good. He loves and knows the game and backs up many of his opinions with facts and does quite a bit of his own research. His bunting work is fantastic. He's a big Marlins fan but is not a homer and that's great. A member of the media should not be a homer. To me homers and shills are useless as they provide as much objective insight as an infomercial. Boog is also very knowledgeable but I would prefer if he talked more baseball and I don't like those questions he comes up with to generate discussions but after Kaplan he's the best thing we have. I don't care he's a Phillies fan. I haven't listened to Sid by himself so maybe he's good, I don't know. From what I've listened to his show it's dreadful but that's when OJ was on and OJ is by far the worst of all the non-qualified ex-Dolphins on local radio and TV and that's saying something. I don't care he's a Mets fan.

I pretty much agree with everything you said, but I believe it's an unwritten rule that you're not supposed to cheer or really show any emotion in the press box while you're covering a game. At least, from my understanding.
