August 10, 200620 yr Cabrera is now second in the NL in batting average (.334), just behind the pesky Freddy Sanchez (.342). What a beautiful thing it would be if Miggy would win the batting title this year. :thumbup He's an incredibly mature, unselfish and disciplined hitter. He could have easily been swinging for the fences at a lot of bad pitches this yr, but he's gone with what pitchers have given him, which has brought his power numbers down. (still hoping he reaches 30 HR) Good little article on Cabs in Miami Herald: MARLINS NOTEBOOK Cabrera is adjusting well BY CLARK SPENCER cspencer@MiamiHerald.com Extra-careful pitchers have managed to diminish Miguel Cabrera's home run production, but the Marlins' top hitter has found other ways to inflict damage. ''They're pitching around me a lot, so I'm hitting what they give me,'' said Cabrera, who went into Wednesday with the third-highest average (.332) in the National League. ``I'm not hitting as many home runs, but that's all right.'' After hitting 33 home runs each of the previous two years, Cabrera is on pace to finish this season with 24. But he has improved in several other key categories. He ranks third in the NL with a .426 on-base percentage and sixth with a .979 OPS (on-base percentage plus slugging percentage). Only Barry Bonds has received more intentional walks, 33, than Cabrera's 22. Cabrera also should exceed 100 RBI for the third straight season. ''He's an unbelievable hitter to watch,'' said Marlins manager Joe Girardi, who predicts Cabrera still will end up hitting 30 home runs. ``He just takes what pitchers give him. And if you're not going to give him a pitch to hit out of the ballpark, he's not going to try to hit it out.'' Girardi said he expects pitchers to ease up a little on Cabrera in the future. ''As our [other] hitters mature, I think that will change,'' Girardi said. ``I think you'll have to pitch to him more because the other guys will have a little bit more of a reputation.'' Go Mig!
August 10, 200620 yr Yep, it should would be nice for him to turn around and win a batting title. Even more incredible if he could do it with the way pitchers are pitching around him.
August 10, 200620 yr It's a shame that this guy doesn't get the publicity he deserves. It's early in his career and it may be a bit homerish, but when all's said and done, he really could be considered the greatest ever. Especially when you consider how young he started doing his thing. Only 5 more HR's until 100 for his career...at 23. That's obscene.

Just think 10 seasons from now he'll still have some good seasons left.

August 10, 200620 yr Author who's his competition, besides Sanchez? Here's a list of the current batting leaders: 1. F Sanchez .342 2. M Cabrera .334 3. C Jones .333 4. N Garciaparra .328 5. C Utley .328 6. S Hatteberg .326 And Chipper's been at .333 for quite a while; I believe he is still on the 15-day DL. Should be interesting. And, yes, it would be incredible if he won... considering his lack of protection in the lineup.
August 10, 200620 yr he's also been incredibly durable. We absolutely MUST sign him to DWright deal. Also, if he wins the batting title it will get him more money, so I hope he finishes second and wins it once we lock him up. :o
August 10, 200620 yr I want a big chase for the batting title, that requires sportscenter to show marlins highlights 1st.
August 10, 200620 yr i could see him winning it because of that intentional walk hit thing. the media loved that sh*t.
August 10, 200620 yr Holy .930 OPS from Scott Hatteberg There's also that Pujols guy at .321 Even more impressive about Hatteberg is the 52 BBs and only 29 Ks! H ehas 25 2Bs and 11 HRs....having a great year batting .330.
August 11, 200620 yr Since I don't watch bears do their buisness, I dont know what youre getting at...
August 11, 200620 yr I don't consider this Cabs best season and he is right in the race for the batting title...If he even gets hot he is a shoo in to get it
August 13, 200620 yr Pujols has been on a tear lately.. wouldn't surprise me to see him win the thing.
August 13, 200620 yr Well since July 30 (14 games) Cabs is 25-54 which is good for: .463 AVG 8 Dbl 3 HR 19 RBI 5/8 BB/K Dude is on a tear right now. Today was his 7th straight multihit game as well. I'd say he has a decent chance on winning the batting title.
August 14, 200620 yr Let's see, McCann and Ethier will be big parts of the race if they can catch up in elligibility. Here's the math. Ethier has 44 games left, McCann has 46. If they each avg 4 plate appearances (not at-bats) per game they'll add 176 and 184 to their current totals of 312 and 332. This comes to 488 and 516 and You need 503 plate appearances to qualify at the end of the year or 3.1 per team game played. Therefore, Ethier needs to avg just slightly over 4 plate appearances a game (pretty likely), and McCann needs to as well, since as a catcher, he won't catch EVERY game. And of course they have to keep hitting well.
