September 22, 200619 yr I live in the Orlando area I would love it! Wouldn't hold my breath though...I agree the 60 million exemption would be granted in a heartbeat if the tried to build a stadium up here
September 22, 200619 yr Orlando is just as bad as anywhere else. If they move them from south florida you can move them to Alaska for all i care. They wouldnt be my team anymore. The Marlins are South Florida's team. Central Florida is a different world to me. I never go there and I hate the drive. It's boring and seems endless to me. The Orlando Mice?

Welcome to my world I do the commute the other way to see Our Marlins...Well worth the commute Kudos to you for that! I would clearly have to give up my seasons tickets unless I can quit my job and convince the Marlins to support me but I don't see that happening. I would drive anywhere in the tri-county area to see the Fish but Central Florida is impossible.
September 22, 200619 yr Tampa has no say on what the Marlins do as long as they stay out of the Tampa/ St Pete area. See: Expos to Washington, Peter Angelos This is why you don't see MLB trying to put another team in the New York/New Jersey/Brooklyn or even Connecticutt.. *Ding* Nope. The closest they came was Anne Arundel County, MD. Major League Rules. These include the rules establishing teams' territories and governing franchise moves, expansion and discipline. They also include the draft and waiver provisions, which I didn't have time to review thoroughly Territorial Limits: Expanded between the 1990 and 1994 Major League Rules to include not just a club's home city, but also surrounding counties. Of particular interest in this respect: ? The Orioles' territory includes Anne Arundel, Howard, Carroll and Harford Counties in Maryland; ? The Marlins' major league territory includes Palm Beach County; ... Under Rule 1( c ), either league can move into a territory belonging to a club in the other league, so long as ( a ) 3/4 of the affected league's teams consent; ( b ) the two parks are at least five air miles apart unless the two clubs mutually agree otherwise; ( c ) the newcomer pays the existing club $100,000 plus half of any previous indemnification to invade the territory; and ( d ) the move leaves no more than two clubs in the territory. This provision dates to late 1960, when it was adopted to establish the terms for the expansion Los Angeles Angels to play in the territory claimed by the Dodgers in 1958. As additional territorial protection, Rule 52 allows a major league club to block any other major or minor league clubs from playing within 15 miles of its territory without permission. Doug Pappas/SABR Anne Arundel County, MD, came the closest to RFK. It is over 18 miles away from the closest point in Anne Arundel County (and the new stadium will be even further), and Angelos was due nothing.
September 22, 200619 yr Author The territory you highlighted is only where "The Major League Clubs shall have assigned operating territories within which they have the right and obligation to play games as the home club." Page 13, Sec. 8 http://www.businessofbaseball.com/docs/MLC...e2005Update.pdf Marlins territory: Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Devil Rays territory: Hillsborough and Pinellas County Sec. 9 is about television territories, which would be the case here, and MLB says these territories "shall be maintained in the Commissioner's Office."
September 22, 200619 yr I just can't see a scenario where this could happen. Why on earth would you want to forsake a top 10 market in order to go to a top 20-25 (depending on what market measure you use) market which is closer to a struggling, smaller market (D-Rays)? This makes no sense whatsoever. They would move to New Jersey, Portland, San Antonio, Vegas, Charlotte, etc. etc., before they would move to Orlando.
September 22, 200619 yr Orlando is just as bad as anywhere else. If they move them from south florida you can move them to Alaska for all i care. They wouldnt be my team anymore. Yet... you are willing to support a New York football team. :mischief2
September 22, 200619 yr I would be happy if the Marlins moved to orlando or jacksonville , it would cut my commute from gainesville to miami down by 4hrs !! I love Miami BUT both cities would draw better than Miami right now, with a dome maybe things would change but as long as the Fish stay in Florida i dont really care where they play
September 23, 200619 yr :hat who in the right mind could take this topic seriously? it's too close to tampa!! the rays organiztion would hate that.they would fight it. perish this thought!
September 23, 200619 yr The Florida Marlins have first right to the Orlando market. The Marlins were the product of the Wayne-led South Florida group compromising with the Orlando group to beat out Tampa for the 1993 NL expansion team. Orlando has the right to court the Marlins and the Marlins have the right to move there. The only thing is that by moving they give up exclusivity in the Miami-Fort Lauderdale and Palm Beach-Fort Pierce TV Markets which means the Devil Rays could add TV and radio affiliates there. But this point is moot as the Rays and Marlins have the agreement to allow the other's FSN/Sun Sports games be shown statewide without issue.

Yet... you are willing to support a New York football team. :mischief2 True, however I used to have season tickets for them. I live in providence now, so i can still go to games (I went last week for the opener). The difference is they have always been in NY. If the jets moved i would no longer be a fan of theirs. If the marlins go anywhere outside of south florida they can f$#k themselves for all I care. PS we need a big win vs buffalo today!
September 24, 200619 yr If it keep the team in state I wouldn't have a problem with this. Of course this is way closer for me to go to games so count on me becoming a season ticket holder.

The same ones that play in New Jersey? Interesting... :mischief2 That said, I'd say the chance of the Marlins moving up to Orlando are about the same as me becoming a starting pitcher for the Marlins, but I would love to see it. Also, D-Rays don't have priority in the Orlando-area. Unless you have DirecTV you aren't going to see them except on some POS channel that used to be Pax that has a broadcast quality that's on par with a 1970s TV show in Somalia and the only reason we get those D-Rays games are when they play the Marlins, Yankees, or Red Sox and it's still infrequent at best. I'm not sure how accurate the 2.4 million attendees figure is, but I bet the Marlins could easily net 2 million or so fans.

That are routinely shifted per the demands of the local cable companies and their subscribers. See the southern Illinois counties which have shifted to the Cardinals, or the southern Alabama towns to the Marlins or northern Florida off and on to the Braves, or the radio stations across Florida that are affiliated with the Braves, Yankees or Dodgers. Angelos' claim was that he was promised those territories forever. No such document has been made public although it may have existed in one form or another.

Angelos' claim was that he was promised those territories forever. No such document has been made public although it may have existed in one form or another. Territories are not shifted easily. South Illinois gets the Cardinals because they are part of the St. Louis Television Market. I live in North Florida, no Braves on TV or the Radio even close to the border. In fact, on the Georgia side you need a satellite to watch or listen to the Braves as the radio network doesn't reach anymore now that WSB is no longer the flagship again. Southern Alabama belongs to the Braves, Marlins and D-Rays because the Mobile-Pensacola Market includes Southern Alabama and extreme Northwestern Florida. This has everything to do with DMAs and how MLB can draw lines with them rather than fighting them.
